There is a great interview posted on Limewire about Kanine Records. Check it out:
Since establishing his label in 2001, Kanine Records founder Lio has had the foresight to work with artists like Shock Cinema, Grizzly Bear, Chairlift, Oxford Collapse, The Whip, and Northern State. Lio took a few moments out of his busy schedule for a quick Q&A with LimeWire Store’s Kelly Smith.
*How has the Brooklyn music scene changed since starting your label?
Lio: The music scene if you call it a scene has definitely changed. I don’t really think there is one scene, more like pockets of cool bands/artists playing around together in a number of different environments. The strongest environment being the DIY all ages loft party. Since 2003 it has grown tremendously. There was a small crop of cool artists back then, but now there are hundreds of great bands.
Any band/artist that you regret not signing?
Of course there are tons, but as all labels know you can’t always sign everyone that you want due to timing issues, financials, etc. But we always try to sign bands that we love and that are willing to work hard to be heard and pursue a musical career.
What labels do you admire? Why?
We admire labels that work hard for their artists, treat them right, continual to foster a creative musical environment, and put out cool artwork. Some of our favorite indie and DIY labels are: Kemado Records, Domino Records, Rough Trade, Polyvinyl Records, Moshi Moshi, and Wichita.
Where’s the next hot bed of music coming out of?
A ton of great music seems to be coming out of the Downtown LA all ages scene (The Smell). But I truly still think Williamsburg is the best place to continue to see hot new bands. There are so many bands popping up all the time and it is super easy to ride your bike down the street and check them out before they become something big.
Do you really consider yourselves “the underdog?”
Definitely as we continue to fight to be heard and get our music out there to the world. And we do this all on tiny budgets. But we feel that if the music is truly that good it will be heard. It is really up to how much the band is willing work to make their dreams happen. And at the end of the day, the kids determine what bands are gonna do well. More then ever kids now have the deciding factor whether a band will make it or not. Kids now can champion the bands that they like in their own way before the majors can tell them what they are supposed to like first. And due to the internet they can listen and learn about a band super fast before they even have any records out. Plus small bands and labels can promote bands much faster than they used to be able to.
If you weren’t answering these questions, what would you be doing?
The same thing that I am doing now, listening to great new records on vinyl. When we are free we are out playing with Toby Rascal and Hbear (our Kanine mascots) at the park.
*Now check out great new records coming from new artists on Kanine Records, including: Chairlift, Holiday For Strings, Holy Hail, Monsters Are Waiting, Shock Cinema, and more.
