Local Natives
"Gorilla Manor"

****
It is not often that you get such a great Beach Boys inspired band out of LA. But Local Natives surely have made one amazing debut album. Filled with sunny harmonies and catchy lyrics you can easily see why people are responding so well to this band. Check our favorite song “Airplanes” as this one won’t leave my head.

French Kiss

Neon Indian
"Psycho Chasms"

*****
This was one of the coolest lo-fi dance albums of 2009. And if you have any questions as of to why, just listen to these great to hit songs: “Deadbeat Summer” and “Should Have Taken Acid With You”. Fans of Washed Out, Small Black, and Junior Boys will enjoy this album.

Los Campensinos
"Romance Is Boring"

****
Fun, fast, punky music should be made by the young. And it only the young that can capture the true spirit of punk. But not many bands still maintain that youthful edge on their sophomore release. Los Campesinos have managed to make an even youthful album the second time around that shows off their real talent. Just listen to the lead track “Romance Is Boring” and you’ll instantly get hooked in their vibrant and catchy choruses. Full of scratchy vocals and shout along choruses, the band gets you up and shouting in excitement. Now that is fun, youthful music.

Class Actress
"Journal Of Ardency"

****
Elizabeth Harper and Scott Rosenthal have been playing together for a long time. But it wasn’t until now that they have released their debut. This five song EP is a fine testament of their work. The lead single “Careful What You Say” is so catchy that you will continue finding yourself hitting repeat. Class Actress take soothing electronic beats that hark back to the days of early 90’s indie dance comparing their work with bands like; St. Etienne, Dubstar, and The Cardigans. It is with Elizabeth’s sweet and soothing voice topped with a electronic disco sound that has become ever so popular lately that makes their songs so addictive.

Hot Chip
"One Life Stand"

*****
This new album from Hot Chip is truly amazing. The band takes off right where they left off on their debut album (skip the sophomore album as it was their low point), by making an album full of electronic and nerdy dance beats that are easy to sing, dance, and hum along to all day long. The best songs on the album; “One Life Stand” and “Take It In” are instant dance floor hits while the rest of the songs (also check out “I Feel Better” and “We Have Love”) still retain a strong and fascinating edge to them. This is definitely a great buy.

Parlophone

Beach House
"Teen Dream"

*****
Beach House have truly come a long way. From releasings two mellow and dreamy albums on Drag City, to their amazing new debut album on Sub Pop. Yes this album is truly as great as everyone says it is. For this album the duo have stepped up the pace and beats to make their dream pop more of a continual listen. Just check out their first single, “Norway”. 2010 is going to be their year, and it’ll be one that they well deserve.

Sub Pop

Blind Man’s Colour
"Wooden Blankets"

*****
This is the six song EP release from Florida’s own Blind Man’s Colour. On this sophomore release the band takes an even more poppy approach to their songwriting, leaving many of their strong Animal Collective comparisons behind and bridging a more Flaming Lips experimental pop vibe to the equation. You will be surprised to hear how well the band has progressed on this new release and overjoyed with the results with each new song.

*****
This debut album from this Brooklyn three-piece is a breathe of fresh air. Strong experimental noise and shoegaze influences take presence when you first listen to the album. The songs have an intense feel that takes on their own life-form. You can hear gushes of experimental electronic samples topped off with shoegaze/fuzzed out guitars that create new sonic landscapes for the musical ears. Fans of Liars, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., My Bloody Valentine, and Wolf Eyes, will truly love this new band.

"Seak Magic"

****
The lofi dance music surely became the craze of 2009 and this band was at many of people’s top lists. And with hit songs like “Bicycle”, “Graphics”, and “Stop Talking” It is easy to hear why. This New Order inspired electronic band harks back to the 1985 Manchester rave days when dance music was simple and fun. Many called it Acid House, but we just call it great music. ‘Stop Talking’ can easily be played out in any club today and sound like it was a lost classic from that era.

Acephale Records

Lucky Soul
"A Coming Of Age"

***
This is excellent modern northern soul music from the UK. I’ve been collecting this group’s 7” singles for over a year now, so it is great to finally hear their debut album all together. This female fronted group truly knows how to write solid tunes that fans of the Pipettes will love. Check out the lead singles “Woah Billy” and “White Russian Doll” as they are assured to be a hit on any indie dance floor.

Ruffa Lane

Surfer Blood
"Astro Coast"

*****
“Swim” #37 top song of the year on Pitchfork, “2009's best piece of Weezer-esque power-pop”. Florida is not normally the state that you would think would produce a new sea of talented new bands. But lately a good amount of hard working and talented musicians have been producing some amazing new music out of the sunshine state. All of the good vibes that the state produces must of worn off on the new generation. Full of white sandy beaches, sidewalk surfing, fruity drinks, walking barefoot through tall green grass, and topped with a laid back atmosphere have truly entered these boys psychic as they have written one of the most uplifting albums to end the summer of 2009. And if you live in Florida, then it is summer all year round. So there is no need to pack up those shorts and sandals for the winter. Formed while in their college dorm room, this foursome has captured the true essence of what a holiday in Florida should be like. Filled with sunny harmonies, fuzzed-out guitars, reverb vocals, and catchy choruses, the boys make hook-filled indie rock with clever arrangements and superb harmonies. The songs contain a true feeling of skilled, but not overly polished songs, giving off a DIY esthetic. Once you hear “Swim (to reach the end)” it all falls perfectly in place as their lead single epitomizes the struggle of fighting with the ocean’s strong currents. Just like fighting against life’s daily struggles and rising above it all. Surfer Blood’s music hits home with fans of Weezer, Vampire Weekend, Beach Boys, The Shins, and Orange Juice. They have already garnished a ton of praise from Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, Spin, Rolling Stone, NME, Under The Radar Mag, Stereogum, and many more, so expect to hear a ton more from these boys.

"Contra"

****
I totally loved the first album to death. Each song on their debut album was a hit single. Unfortunately that is not the case this time, but it is still one damn good album of Afropop. The first singles “Cousins” and “Horchata” are strong enough to make the album great. They make my winter skin want to dance and be merry. Even in this Northern snow blizzard I’m craving an ice cold margarita.

"Eyelid Movies"

*****
It was the first snow day of winter and we had a massive blizzard, but I had the night off work and I was itching to go out. So I threw on my parka and headed out to see one of my friends bands play. To my surprise this boy/girl duo came on after my buddy’s band and totally blew me away. I heard of the band in passing before, but never expected them to be this good. Mixed with electronic loops, hip-hop beats, shoegaze, and a strong pop edge they instantly won my heart over within the first song. It was as if Portishead had been reborn with an angelic female singer. Her voice is super dreamy yet the beats keep everything super dancy, fresh sounding, and well amazingly fun. Fans of Massive Attack, Dot Allison, and Chairlift will also love this amazing band from the small town of Saratoga Springs, NY. Check out my personal favorite song “When I’m Small”.

Barsuk

The Soft Pack
"The Soft Pack"

*****
Not only did the band change their name from The Muslims to The Soft Pack, the boys even changed their song a bit. But all of that doesn’t even matter as it hasn’t’ hindered the quality of music that their have put out on this sophomore release. The album is packed with solid songs that are catchy and fun to listen to. This time around the boys actually went into a real studio and recorded songs that are away from their 4-track garage sound. With a bit more of a polished sound you are more likely to hear some of these songs in bars, clubs, and even on the radio as these album highlights (“C’mon”, “Answer To Yourself”, and “Parasites”) are solid party jams. Fans of The Strokes, Kings Of Leon, and The Jam will love this new release.

Kemado

The Flaming Lips
"Embryonic"

****
The Flaming Lips haven’t put out a bad record yet and judging by their first single, “Silver Trembling Hands”, they truly are not about to start. On this new album the band takes a new dark and experimental side that almost sounds post punk and industrial. But don’t fear all of their great pop hooks are still nested in there. All in all we are stoked that they are still around for us to enjoy.

Warner Bros.

Annie
"Don’t Stop"

*****
Could a record contain any more hits? Annie has truly stepped up the game in the pop songwriting world on this new album. “Don’t Stop” is filled with tons of hits that sparkle. Instead of maintaining any indie cred she has gone completely pop and made an album that can stand up to Kylie or Madonna any day. Fans of Little Boots and La Roux will also like her for her sassy lyrics. With great singles like “Don’t Stop”, “I Don’t Like Your Band”, and “Songs Remind Me Of You” you’ll be hearing Annie all over clubs and radio very soon, if you are already not.

Gentle Friendly
"Ride Slow"

****
Gentle Friendly is a great little find. Who would know that such a cool little band exists. They sound like they should have been put out by Alan McGee’s label Creation Records in the early 90’s. With a solid indie pop style the band makes fun, simple, and catchy songs that also bring in a bit of shoegaze influence. And well like I said they sound very 1990’s but in a cool way. Check out the lead singles “Clean Breaker” and “Lovers Rock” for the album highlights.

Upset The Rhythm

Talk Normal
"Sugarland"

*****
Finally the debut album has come from the Brooklyn duo (Andrya Ambro and Sarah Register) and what a treat it tis. Filled with angular guitars and experimental pop concepts you will be excited to hear something new that still makes sense. If you are a fan of no-wave inspired bands like Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, We Are Powers, Liars, and Sonic Youth, then you will totally love what Talk Normal are creating. Each song is a refreshing take on originality. Topped with a primal drum beat you can easily find yourself engrossed in their music.

The Black Jaspers
"The Black Jaspers"

***
How many different bands can King Khan actually be in? I mean he seems to be everywhere nowadays. But the man has paid his dues and done it tremendously well. With this band he takes his songs to the punkier side of rock and has some fun with a pop punk punch up. The result is a good laugh that has a good and catchy 1979 punk style kick to it.

In The Red

Impediments
"Impediments"

*****
This super young San Fran bay area band should have been born in the 70’s when The Ramones, Dead Boys, and Richard Hell were around as their music fits perfectly in line with that long lost sound. The only issue is that they do it so well that you truly don’t care that they don’t sound original. Each song is a full force sonic assault on classic pop punk. This is the kind of music that gets your heart pumping and your fits pounding. And with all of these new lo-fi bands that are ever so popular now, it is refreshing to hear a good band just rocking out with great songs.

"Things Are Not All Right"

****
Goner Records specializes in putting out cool garage rock and pop punk from the deep South. With this new band they hit a home run. With killer poppy garage licks like “Lie To Me”, “It’ Won’t Be Long”, and the album’s highlight “Suspicious” it won’t be long before this band breaks out to the big time. But for now enjoy these great catchy garage punk classics in waiting.

Brilliant Colours
"Introducing"

****
I can’t get my head around how great this song “Absolutely Anything” is. It’s not only the highlight of this album, but by far one of the coolest and catchiest songs of 2009. Brilliant Colors have a very 80’s new wave style pop focus with a strong and quirky no-wave twist, which takes the songs on an angular twist that combines solid vocal hooks. Yes this is a band that art school kids will love, but also one that many new music lovers can enjoy as well.

Slumberland

Silk Flowers
"As Above So Below"

****
Formed out of hardcore past bands, you would never think to hear this post punk dark and droney band to come from these three. Sounding like they should of belonged on Factory Records or Beggars Banquet in the 80’s each song is slow and dark with a dark new-wave edge to them. The surprising thing is that they are actually pretty good and tend to get addicting the more you listen to them.

Captured Tracks

Kings of Convience
"Declaration Of Dependence"

***
This third album by Sweden’s finest twee-pop duo is a bit of a let down. Not that it isn’t good or anything. It is actually quite great. The problem is that it sounds exactly like the other two previous albums, just not as exciting as it doesn’t forecast anything new. Fans of Princeton, Belle and Sebastian, and The Pains of Being Pure At Heart should check this band out.

Editors
"In This Light And On This Evening"

**
It is painful to say this, but I have to say that this album totally blows. What happened to this band? This album is super painful to listen to. They sound like a bad version of Depeche Mode with screeching vocals and songs that drag along for no reason at all. Their debut album was truly a great work of art, but it seems that the band has lost their plot and forgotten how to play and/or write anything of value anymore. Oh well, I hope they still know how to type as there are always temp jobs out there.

Kitchenware

Idlewild
"Post Electric Blues"

****
Idlewild first started out as a load punk band ready to take on the world with their fantastic live show. But as the years have gone by the band slowly changed more into a real pop band that learned how to sing. In the process their tempos slowed down and their lyrical content got more serious. They started to sound more like REM, leaving their punk roots behind and going more strong political content. Now it has been over 15 years and the band is still playing, writing, and releasing records of great quality. Even though their tempos have slowed down and they now sound more like Scottish folk singers, they still know how to make fantastic songs that will stick in your heads for days. And for that we still love them.

The Mantles
"The Mantles"

****
This is an excellent album to come out of San Francisco. Greg Ashley even sings and plays on some tracks as a celebrity treat. What you really need to know is that this is excellent jangly, garage pop that you can actually sing along to. Recorded in the ever so popular lo-fi esthetic this is a great asset to any record collection.

Silt Breeze

Little Boots
"Hands"

****
Little Boots debut album is full of dance floor hits. The best song on the album is by far “Meddle” but “New In Town” and “Stuck On Repeat” instantly fall behind as great hits. These are songs that are tons of fun to sing and dance along to at any bar of club around the world. Like many pop artists out there today Little Boots is cute as a button and sports unique style to boot. Fans of La Roux, Annie, Ladyhawke will love this album.

Dizzee Rascal
"Tongue n’ Cheek"

****
Dizzee’s new album is out his own label for the first time ever. Only someone this good can pull off releasing their own record and still making it great. It is very 90’s sounding in a cheesy cool way, that is way too much fun to not get into. Check out the singles that are getting kids dancing all night long in bars and clubs “Dance Wiv Me” and “Holiday”.

"Real Estate"

*****
We’ve all been waiting a long time for this to come out and it was well worth the wait. Packed with all of the hits from their 7” releases it is finally good to hear the songs that we have been thrilled about at their live shows. Real Estate makes great slacker rock that bridges the gap between pych and indie rock. Fans of Pavement will love this band. I truly know that they are headed for big things and this album is a statement to that fact.

Lightning Bolt
"Earthly Delights"

*****
Rhode Island is the home to truly creative artists. With cheap rent, bands live there free of life’s normal worries of paying bills and having to work numerous jobs to get by. With that in mind it is where bands can truly be artists and not afraid to experiment with new sounds. Lightning Bolt are one of the true kings of this new experimental sound. “Earthly Delights” is their newest record and by far their best to date. Full of hard chugging drumming, it contains a strong rhythmic beat that keeps the album roaring at full speed. If you haven’t seen the band play live, then you are truly missing out as there are by far one of the most engaging live bands of this era.

Load

Deastro
"Moondagger"

****
Deastro’s new album is no surprise to those that know the band well. But to those that are just discovering them, they make cool indie rock ala Postal Service. Full of happy go lucky electronic beats the songs are fun and easy to sing and dance along to. This is the style of music that will cheer up any old sap.

Ghostly International

Bad Lieutenant
"New Cry Another Tear"

**
Bernard Summer, from New Order, has a new project, so we should be super excited right? Well unfortunately not, as his new project is not all that we would want from this indie legend. It lacks the same magnitude that Electronic or New Order had. But you can still hear the remains of an artist’s great work on the lead single, “Sink or Swim”.

Triple Echo

Christmas Island
"Blackout Summer"

***
Southern California truly seems like a paradise. It’s sunny and warm every day, there are free skateparks everywhere, and there is great Mexican food on every street corner. So what else could you want from life? Christmas Island that is. This duo have taken the ever so popular lo-fi scuzzy pop punk sound and combined it with a 50’s doo-wap feel. With every hipster today, this sound is nothing new, but at the very least it is how well Christmas Island does it that makes it so exciting.

Black Feelings
"Black Feelings"

***
Canada is thundering high above the U.S. with this debut album. Full of dark chanting and powerful indie rock you get a sense that someone has been studying the back catalog of Sub Pop. Think Jesus Lizard, The Melvins, and Mudhoney and you will be right on target with what Black Feelings have created. The result is a terrific album that would fit right on tour with fellow Canadians We Are Wolves.

Alien8 Recordings

Wizard Sleeve
"Make The World Go Away"

****
This is the debut album from one of Alabama’s craziest bands. Not only are these guys demented, you can hear it clearly in their music. But it’s a fun type of dimension that makes it so good. Packed with tons of jams and psychedelic pop licks the songs make for a great listen. Be on the lookout for more from this crew as there truly is something special hidden inside here.

Hozac

Music Go Music
"Expressions"

****
This California band make warm and fuzzy 80’s style pop that is fun and easy to sing and dance along to. Their music makes a perfect fit for fans of Chairlift, Psychedelic Furs, and The Cure. Listen to the song “Warm In The Shadows” first for the album’s highlight. It sets the tone perfectly for a scene out of the movie Sixteen Candles.

Secretly Canadian

The King Khan & BBQ Show
"Invisible Girl"

****
This is the ultimate party band. Mark Sultan and King Khan both have numerous other bands and when they manage to get together you know that you are going to have a record full of party jammers. Listening to the album highlights you already can tell that kids will be up all night partying to these songs; “Taste Buds”, “Animal Party”, and “Truth or Dare”. Each one incites a party in its one right.

In The Red

Julian Casablancas
"Phrases For The Young"

***
Julian can truly write some amazing songs, but when is the next The Strokes coming. It seems that each of the members has been way to busy putting out their own solo albums. Overall this album doesn’t live up to Julian’s full potential. But when the two album highlights kick in, “11th Dimension” and “River of Brakelights” Julian is on top form. These two songs could easy be on any The Strokes album as huge singles. Fans of The Strokes still should pick up this album, as it will please you to hear his voice again.

RCA

Weezer
"Raditude"

***
We all love Weezer and remember them for their catchy songs. There are two sides to Weezer fans. One that loves their early noisy period, “Pinkerton” and one that loves them simply for their catchy pop hooks with songs like; “Sweater” and “Hash Pipe”. On this new album the band plays up to the poppy side with super pop highlights; “I’m Your Daddy” and “Can’t Stop Partying”. Unfortunately the rest of the album doesn’t hold out as strong, but at least you have two great songs out of the album to celebrate to. And nowadays that seems to be more than you can ask from a major label rlease.

Interscope

The Raveonettes
"In and Out of Control"

*****
Long lost are the heavy shoegaze influences that this band has trademarked their sound after. Now this duo have taken a more sunny 60’s sugary pop approach to their songwriting. And it with this new sound that they have written some of their best songs to date. Check out the lead singles “Last Dance” and “Suicide” and you’ll instantly understand what I’m talking about.

Ume
"Sunshower EP"

*****
This EP takes us back to the early 90’s when grunge was a normal genre. Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana ruled the charts just as well with female fronted bands like Hole and Babes In Toyland. Ume bring back that sound with an aggressive female lead guitarist and singer, Lauren, who makes dark, yet beautifully poppy guitar songs. Each song is heavy, but so catchy that they stick in your head all day long. Check out my favorite single “The Conductor” first from this Austin, Texas trio.

Simian Mobile Disco
"Temporary Pleasure"

***
SMD’s new album is really just ok. When you think of all of the potential that these two mix masters contain you get a bit disappointed when you listen to this new album. But it is with the addition of some guest stars that the album is saved. The lead songs “Cruel Intentions” starring Beth Ditto of The Gossip and “Cream Dream” starring Gruff of Super Furry Animals are the album highlights and ones that you would want to hear out at night.

Wichita

Atlas Sound
"Logos"

***
Brad Cox, the lead singer of Deerhunter, is truly a prolific guy. Weather with his main band or solo, he truly knows how to write and record some creative music. With his Atlas Sound moniker, Brad has created a new album that full of terrific experimental pop that will find friends who embrace TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, and Deerhunter. Check out the single “Walkabout” for the album’s main highlight.

Le Loup
"Family"

****
Le Loup’s sophomore album is filled with beautiful and enchanting mystic folk songs that are actually catchy enough that you can sing along to. If you haven’t seen this band live yet, you must as their live show will instantly make you a believer. Check out this album, but don’t stop there as their debut album is where the real treat lies.

Hardly Art

Calvin Harris
"Ready For The Weekend"

***
Calvin’s sophomore album is a bit of a disappointment when you think of how great his debut is, but once the electro stomper “Relax” comes on you get a sense of the great Mr. Harris that we knew from his debut. This song contains the hooks and energy that made us fall in love with him in the beginning. The lead single “Ready For The Weekend” is not a great, but still holds some interest. The real highlight is with the bonus track “Dance Wiv Me” that has Dizzee Rascal lending guest vocals.

Ultra Records

Ian Brown
"My Way"

****
The Stone Roses kingpin has another new solo album. It won’t blow your mind, but it will continue to entertain you as each new album does. Ian still has a solid groove backed by a soulful voice. The best songs are “Stellify” and “Just Like You”.

Polydor

Port O’Brien
"Threadbare"

****
This sophomore album is filled with terrific enchanting country folk songs. The album sets a magical tone were everyone lives in a fairytale. In this land, the grass is always green, knee high, its 70 degrees all the time, and work doesn’t exist. You have no worries in the world and no agenda. Life is just one joyful pleasure. Fans of My Morning Jacket will truly love this band.

"Bonfires On The Heath"

****
Unfortunately there is nothing really new to say about this band’s new album, except that they continue to make solid albums that you can rely on for great tunes. This shoegaze influenced band never disappoints when it comes to wanting to listen to great chilled out music. Fans of Slowdive should check them out.

Bombay Bicycle Club
"I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Away"

Headlights
"Wildlife"

****
On this new album Headlights show us their softer side that ends up sounding more beautiful than anything that they have done before. These indie stalharts know how to write great songs and this album is a testament to that. Unlike many new trendy bands, this is music that will last throughout the years.

Small Black
"Small Black"

*****
These self produced, self released five songs are a breath of fresh air. Not only are they tons of fun, they give you a warm gitty feeling inside as you listen to the lead single “Despicable Dogs”. The boys have been gaining a large amount of attention from the blogs due to their great live show. And songs this good, all of the attention is well deserved. Be on the lookout for a full length next year as the boys start touring across the U.S. for the first time.

Lemonade
"Lemonade"

*****
When I first heard this band’s debut single “Big Weekend”, it blew my mind. It instantly reminded me of Manchester in the early 90’s (808 State, Happy Mondays, New Order, Underworld). Basically everything still indie, cool, super dancey, and fun. This is the song that you can never get tired of hearing at 4:00am. But once you listen through the complete record you will be even more stoked on how good the rest of all of the songs truly are. Check out my other favorite single “Bliss Out” for more great tracks.

True Panther Sounds

Air
"Love 2"

***
Air make beautiful music. This is the kind of stuff that was perfectly made for movie soundtracks. Unfortunately it is not that exciting to listen to on a Saturday night. It feels a bit outdated for that. But if you enjoy listening to chilled out music while you are working then this is the perfect album for you. This would also be good to be played at restaurants and art galleries.

Astralwerks

The Fresh & Onlys
"Grey-Eyed Girls"

****
California is obsessed with sunny sounds and psychedelic pop. And you can hear it in their music. This southern California band is bringing back the dark and psychic pop that Ian McCulloch and his Bunnymen did so well in the 80’s. Yes it sounds very much like Echo and The Bunnymen, but that is good thing. A very good thing.

Woodsist

A Sunny Day In Glasgow

"Teeth Lost, Hearts Won."

***
This sophomore album is a fine release for the indie world. It won’t blow your mind, but it truly is a ton of fun. Filled with shouty lyrics and pop hooks, this Australian band surely know how to entertain. Fans of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bikini Kill, and Matt and Kim will enjoy this band.

Thirty Tigers

A Place To Bury Strangers
"Exploding Head"

****
Oliver and co. are back with their 2nd full length. No new formula here. Just the same great punk endosed shoegaze rock topped with a strong punk edge. If you are lucky you’ll get the chance to pick up the vinyl copy complete with 180 gram clear vinyl. It’s a real collector’s treat.

Mute

Jamie T
"Kings and Queens"

****
Jamie T is total love. His songs are youthful, inspiring, and insanely fun. Check out the singles “Sticks and Stones” and “Chaka Demus” for the album highlights. Jamie is a true poet that has a strong sense of what is going on around him. Like Bob Dylan before him he knows how to capture life’s issues within a strong lyrical and musical document.

Virgin

Muse
"The Resistance"

****
Muse is one of the most crossover bands of the 2000’s. Metal, indie, rock, and dance kids all around the world like their epic songs. On this new album the band takes a more grunge heavy rock approach than the previous goth rock sound. The lead song “Uprising” is by far their catchiest number that will instantly stick in your head.

Warner Brothers

Sunset Rubdown
"Dragonslayer"

****
Sunset Rubdown’s sophomore album is a real treat. Each heartfelt song takes on a dark and pruding essence that brings comparisons to Nick Cave and Arcade Fire. Even though the songs have a dark edge to them, they are filled with a large amoung of hope and upbeat rhythm to capture your interest.

Jagjaguwar

Little Claw
"Human Taste"

****
Portland’s Little Claw have already garnished some attention when they released their last debut 7”. Music enthusiasts and record collectors all over have been raving about their bluesy garage rock. Topped with some sweet female vocals this album is garage rock at it’s best.

Vivian Girls
"Everything Goes Wrong"

***
When Vivian Girls first came out I totally feel in love with their blend of shoegaze and garage rock topped with a 60’s girl group vocal style. But now the girls have changed the formula up a little bit making it sound more straight pop punk. Check out the single “Can’t Get Over You” for the album’s highlight.

The Cribs
"Ignore The Ignorant"

***
The Cribs new album is a bit of a dissapointment. Especially considering Johnny Marr has joined the band to up the antis, but instead of making it an improvement, they have turned into just an ok indie band. It is with the single “Cheat On Me” that the album is saved from floating away into the music black hole.

Wichita

Pens
"Hey Friend What You Doing"

***
This UK all girl group is having a ton of fun. And you can hear it on this album. As they play their experimental noise pop 100 miles per hour you’ll have just as much fun as they are by just listening along to their songs.

De Stijl

Monotonix
"Where Were You When It Happened?"

****
Monotonix is one of the best live bands out there period. Their intense stage antics and energy are one to behold. On this sophomore album the band captured that live essence perfectly. This is dirty, raw, and powerful rock n’ roll at its best.

Drag City

Thee Oh Sees
"Dog Poison"

****
John Dwyr and co have gone a whole new direction with this new album. On this release they have taken a more pop sound and abandoned their loud, experimental punk edge. Instead the band has crafted some great pop songs that you can actually sing along to while still maintaining their cool lo-fi edge.

Captured Tracks

Volcano Choir
"Unmap"

****
This debut album is a side project of the man frontman of Bon Iver with his friends in the band Collections of Coloines of Bees. These fellow Wisconsinites have made one of the most beautiful albums to come out of 2009. Filled with landscaped sounding guitars and whispered vocals the album instantly sets you in a relaxing mood to help you forget about your boss and his continual demands for more reports.

Jagjaguwar

Princeton
"Cocoon Of Love"

*****
This is the debut album from LA coastal beachside. Filled with a strong love for pop music, these boys harness the past sounds of the Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” while sounding a bit more twee like Belle and Sebastian. What you get in the end is an album full of surperb and catchy songs that you can easily sing along to while driving in the warm California sun. This is music that inspires true happiness and love. But this is no hippy band, these boys lay more roots to the preppy side of things, just in a laid back California way. Key songs lie with “Shout It Out” and Cylpso Gold”. In anticipation and support of their debut album, they'll head out on tour with Ra Ra Riot and other touring acts through the rest of the year. Also check out the debut limited edition 7” single “Shout It Out” as it is sure to become a collector’s item.

Kanine Records

Cold Cave
"Love Comes Close"

****
Cold Cave is a duo from the New York and Philadelphia area that make dark, synth, experimental pop. At times most of it might seem unlistenable to the average ear as many of their songs verge on the highly experimental side. But it is when they do come together to make some great electronic pop tunes, they do it amazingly well. Check out these singles; “Life In Magazines” and “The Tree Grew Emotions and Died” for their pop genius. Fans of Crystal Castles, Heartsrevolution, and Kraftwerk take note.

Heartworm Press

Health
"Get Color"

****
LA’s finest noise band has evolved into something truly amazing. Starting out from the experimental Downtown LA (The Smell) scene Health has blown away many of the contemporaries with their intense live show. Each of their previous releases are filled with super charged guitars and electronics. But now on their new record the band takes a somewhat new direction by adding an even more electronic edge to the mix as well as some shoegaze influences. This new direction away from their heavy experimental noise rock leaves them with some highly creative and beautiful arty sounds that fans of Battles and My Bloody Valentine will both easily love. Check out the lead single “Die Slow” first for the album highlight.

Lovepump United

Reigning Sound
"Love and Curses"

***
This is the new album from rock n’ roll’s elders of the underground rock circuit. Reigning Sound make fun time garage, rock n’ roll that you can easily groove out and party to. If you like the Dirtbombs then you will love this band and wanna collect everything that they do as each record is treat to behold

In The Red

Yacht
"See Mystery Lights"

****
Many of you indie kids remember The Blow. They were a cool little indie band from the West Coast. After they disbanded the duo formed Yacht, which was more of a laptop band in the beginning. And with a disappointing first album and bad live show, I easily forgot about them. But after hearing this new album, I am happy to say that they have stepped up the game and become something exciting again. Although this could be due to the DFA studio production. Either way, the lead single, “Summer Song” is simply brilliant. It sounds as if LCD Soundsytem has gone twee dance.

DFA

BLK JKS
"After Robots"

**
I heard so much about this band that I was super excited to get their record. But upon listening to it, I left disappointed. The album lacked the excitement that the press and buzz promised. Sounding a bit like Yeasayer and TV on the Radio, this band from Africa make weird and wacky tunes that are cool, but simply not catchy enough to be memorable. Hopefully the sophomore release will surprise us.

Secretly Canadian

The XX
"XX"

**
I’m still not sure what the hype on this band is all about. The vocals sound as if they were recorded while the band was asleep and the playing is slower than molasses. Yet the press and blogs have been raving about this band. If the songs weren’t so slow and protruding, I might actually like it better. But if you are into slow music check out the lead singles, “Basic Space” and “Infinity” for the album highlights.

XL Recordings

El Perro Del Mar
"Love Is Not Pop"

***
This third release of sweet, endearing, and tender Swedish pop is a nice treat. Fans of Fiest, The Concretes, and The Cardigans will enjoy these heartwarming pop songs. For the album highlights check out the songs “Change of Heart”, “L is for Love”, and “Let Me In” first.

The Control Group

Cornershop
"Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast"

****
Everyone remembers Cornershop from the height of the Britpop craze. But they are now back with a new album that sounds like they never left. Check out the singles “Who Fingered Rock n’ Roll” and “The Roll Off Characteristics” as they are both great.

Ample Play

Lovvers
"OCD Go Go Go Go Girls"

****
What started out as a cool DIY style punk band, has now evolved into way more. Now combining garage, and skuzzy punk sounds together the band continues to push out great albums. If you haven’t got the chance to see this UK outfit you need to see them, as they are super high energy and tons of fun live. This album shows off how much fun you will have at one of their live shows.

Wichita

Soundpool
"Mirrors in Your Eyes"

****
Since the early 90’s indie kids have always loved shoegaze bands. So it is no surprise that new musicians are continually revisiting this glorious sound. What makes it even better is when they take those past influences and make it something even more special by adding their own take to the mix. Soundpool have beautiful melodies, dreamy guitars, and angelic vocals, like many shoegaze bands (Slowdive, Ride), but add a new flavor with disco (70’s inspired) beats that make the songs fun and dancey as well. Fans of Goldfrapp, Annie, and Sally Shapiro will be excited to hear these new songs. I’ve been listening to Nite Jewel a lot lately and Soundpool fit along perfectly with what she is creating with her lost disco sound, yet Kim Field’s vocals are way more exciting and sexy on the ears. For this third album the band has conjured up something truly magical.

Self Released

The Chinese Stars
"Heaven on Speed Dial
"

****
On The Chinese Stars’ third full-length release the band features Craig Kureck, Eric Paul(Arab on Radar), Paul Vieira, and V. Von Ricci(Mahi Mahi) for one fast and furious gut wrenching rock n’ roll adventure. This experimental / noise band has taken the DIY sound to the highest level that you can with super advanced sounds that still maintain a killer sound that never becomes tiring to listen to.

Anchor Brain

Taken By Trees
"East of Eden"

***
Victoria Bergsman, the lead singer of The Concretes, simply has an amazing voice. She is also well known for co-singing on Peter, Bjorn, and John’s hit song “Young Folks. But on this solo project she gives us angelic vocals with a tranquil and mystic backing music. The result is a very soothing record to chill out to.

Rough Trade

Desire
"Ii"

****
Desire is more super cool retro 80’s inspired electro from the Italians Do It Better label. On this album you get eight songs of lushed out vocals and smooth electro beats that are dancey yet soothing to your mind and soul. Check out these two songs “Colorless Sky” and “Mirror Mirror” as the album highlights. Now see you on the dancefloor.

Italians Do It Better

The Big Pink
"A Brief History Of Love"

*****
I was super lucky to be able to catch this band play early on in their career in an abandoned pub in East London, warehouse party style, and was instantly blown away within the first two songs. Their sound was so professional and tight that each song stuck in my head all night long. Now that their debut album is finally here there is no spotting this band from attaining one of the best indie/dance crossover hits of the year. With singles like “Dominos”, “To Young To Love”, and “Velvet” it is easy to predict their massive success. Last year was the year for the Klaxons, but this year is the year for The Big Pink.

4AD

Box Elders
"Alice and Friends"

***
Box Elders are one of the most fun garage pop bands that you will ever get to see live. After catching one of their sets at Market Hotel I knew this wasn’t just some ordinary garage band. One of the members even shoots fire out of his crouch. Their show might be somewhat of a crazy circus, but on record they give us some good ole’ fashion 60’s style pop nuggests. Listening to the lead song “Jackie Wood” you can instantly hear their catchy doo-wap choruses over their garage rock roots.

Goner Records

Mew
"No More Tories Are Told Today"

****
Mew is shoegaze loveliness that conjures sweet dreams all night long with their songs. The band has been around since the early 2000’s but unlike most bands they continue to get better with each new album. And on this album they have hit a home run. Fans of old shoegaze favorites Ride, Slowdive, and Lush will totally love this album.

Columbia

Times New Viking
"Born Again Revisited"

***
When you see this band live you get a totally different perspective as to when you listen to the band on their recordings. Live the band’s songs shine hard as they rock out, but on record the band takes us on a lo-fi experimental rock trip that is a raw, dirty, and punk rock exploration through basement recordings. Each song is a somewhat different approach on artist freedom that is well documented within this new album.

Matador Records

Girls
"Album"

****
At first listen I dismissed this band due to the over hype that they have been getting. I expected a faster and poppier band. But once you dip down into the record more and forget about what the press is saying, you will discover that there are some great tunes. “Lust For Life”, “Big Bad Motherfucker”, and “Hellhole Ratrace” are all great pop tunes while “Morning Light” travels down a blissful shoegaze path. Mixing elements of indie, shoegaze, doowap, Britpop, and garage, the band has made a 90’s indie style album that brings back the fun in music.

True Panther Sounds

Artic Monkeys
"Humbug"

***
Artic Monkeys spent a good amount of time living in NYC recording with Josh Holmes(Queens of The Stone Age) in order to create this third album. Even though I totally love this band the album tends to lack that luster that their debut album contained. Josh had a bit too much rock influence on this album making it more hard edged. The key song is with the single “Crying Lightning” that harks back to their old days of catchy brit rock.

Domino Records

TV Ghost
"TV Ghost"

***
Indiana must be more interesting that it portrays it self to be. As TV Ghost give us ghowling vocals that sound like Dracula’s little cousins’ band. Filled with fuzzed out guitars and haunting vocals it is no surprise that In The Red found this dark and sinister sounding outfit. Maybe we should all reconsider visiting the Midwest.

In The Red

Yo La Tengo
"Popluar Songs"

****
I got to start off by saying that there honestly really is not a single bad Yo La Tengo album. This band is way too talented to make a bad album. Even though the band has been around since the early 1990’s, they continue to challenge music and make some great tunes. On this new album the band collects all genres of music and gives us a wide variety of musical styles to choose from. Their best style still lies in their indie shoegaze direction.

Matador Records

Gary War
"Horrible Parade"

***
Gary War is still a somewhat a new artist, but already has managed to put out a good number of releases. And with each release he continues to surprise us with new songs. On this album the band takes us on a spooky ride filled with voda recorder style vocals that sound as if they were recorded in a submarine. If you were lucky enough to catch him live at the Captured Tracks/Woodsist party this summer then you would of seen their newest female keyboardist that adds a completely new and enchanting flavor to their already highly experimental mix.

Sacred Bones

Patrick Wolf
"The Bachelor"

***
Patrick Wolf is one of the most flamboyant characters in indie. On this new album he takes it even further by sounding even more like a modern day version of The Phantom of the Opera. For those of you that remember the Britpop days his vocal and lyrical singing style often reminds me of Neil Hanning of The Divine Comedy. For the album highlights check out the songs “Hard Times” and “Battle”.

Nylon

Amanda Blank
"I Love You"

**
There is no question that Amanda Blank was likened to be a star whenever you saw her on stage with Spank Rock, Santigold, or MIA. But now that we have her debut album she unfortunately doesn’t live up to the expectations. Amanda sings like a modern day version of Cyndi Lauper minus the big pop tunes. Mixing R&B, indie, rock, hip hop, and electroclash she still manages to pull out two great tunes with “Make It Take It” and “Lemme Get Some”.

Downtown Records

Meth Teeth
"Everything Went Wrong"

***
Meth Teeth is dark and sludgey garage rock hindering on the experimental side. Their fuzzed out guitars and muffled vocals fit perfectly with Woodsist’s cool label sound. This album is a ton of fun to listen to, just don’t expect to be able to sing along to the lyrics later on.

Woodsist

Jay Reatard
"Watch_Me_Fall"

*****
Jay Reatard’s last album “Blood Visions” blew my mind. It was filled with such power guitar chords and supercharged vocals that you couldn’t help but excited as you bounced around your room. Now Jay Reatard is back with another new album that transcends all that he has done before. On this album Jay steps it up a notch by making his songs more poppy and orchestrated. And to many that is gonna seem super weird coming from this punk maestro, but to us it’s a positive step in a new and even more fun direction. Now Jay Reatard sounds a bit like Supergrass, which are one of my all time favorite bands. And the best thing about this album is that it is hard to pick out a favorite single, as all of them are super good. I just never get bored listening to this album all day and night.

Matador Records

ZAZA
"Cameo EP"

*****
Riding in on oceanic waves of drone and immense muscular tribal drumming, enter the spectral dream-pop three-piece ZAZA. While associated with their peers in Brooklyn's recent exploding indie-pop/shoegaze scene, ZAZA sonically contrast from their guitar-pop brethren in favor of something darker, more mysterious driven by haunting, ethereal vocals and rolling, cavernous rhythms. This six song debut EP channels all of their talent into something truly exordinary. Check out the specially silver coating on the vinyl for a collector’s treat.

Kanine Records

Blind Man’s Colour
"Season Dreaming"

*****
Blind Man’s Colour formed when two 17 year olds built their own studio on the beach in Jacksonville, FL. Out of a strong love of atmospheric and experimental pop music the boys dreamed of new sounds to create by capturing what was right there in front of them. The sounds of gushing waves, sea gulls, fireworks, and the seashore winds inhabit these treasured 10 songs. Now at the still young age of 19 the boys are ready to release their proper first full length album “Season Dreaming” that sounds like a combination of the atmospheric and experimental mindedness of Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear while maintaining a strong pop edge that the Flaming Lips are so good at. We first discovered this band when Kanye West posted on his blog “This is some dope shit for my apt. Someone needs to sign this band”. Soon after blogs were all championing these youngsters including; Stereogum, Pitchfork, Gorilla vs. Bear, Tripwire, and more.

Kanine Records

Sally Shapiro
"My Guilty Pleasure"

****
Swedish pop artist Sally Shapiro is ready to give us her sophomore album. This time around Sally takes a more straight forward pop sound to her songs. Here she takes out more of the italo disco feel and goes for a more sweet and sugary disco pop sound that resembles St. Etienne. Check out the singles “Moonlight Dance” and “Save Your Love” for instant hits.

Paper Bag

The Drums
"Summertime"

*****
This debut EP from this quartet is a super exciting. The Drums write fun, catchy songs that sound like a mix between The Beach Boys and The Smiths. Their already crowd favorite single, “Let’s Go Surfing” will stay in your head for months. And is the perfect song to come out in the summertime. It makes you want to dance all day/night long with glee. Expect big things from this band as they are already preparing for their debut full-length and a couple 7” releases. But for now these 6 songs are a must have for any and everyone.

Holiday Shores
"Columbus’d The Whim"

****
Just when you think Florida is only for retired and old people, a crop of young new bands continue to emerge out of the island style state. Like Blind Man’s Colour, Holiday Shores are a young group of boys that recorded their debut along the sand beaches of the Panhandle state. Taking their name from the street that they grew up on this debut album that is truly captivating. Fans of Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, and The Walkmen will truly enjoy each of these songs. Listening to this album makes me proud to say that I also grew up along these very same sandy shores that these new bands are coming out from.

Twosyllable Records

Howling Bells
"Radio Wars"

***
This is the third album from this Australian band. I remember seeing them in a tiny club with only 100 people and then hearing a couple months later that they were blowing up. It was easy to see why as they contained one terrific female frontperson. With good looks, a gorgeous voice, and catchy indie pop songs, you can easily see why the band is doing so well. Check out the lead song “Treasure Hunt” for the album’s hightlight.

Independiente

Florence + The Machine
"Lungs"

***
Florence Welch is another art student from London that has made a pop album. Nowadays it seems that this is the norm as kids are refusing to take up real jobs. Instead they are forgoing work and heading straight into the clubs/bars and creating their own careers. Forence strength lies more in her crazy live performance but this debut does contain a couple jems that will last on well in your record collection. Check out “Rabbit Heart” and “Kiss With A Fist” for the album highlights.

Moshi Moshi

Oneida
"Rated"

****
By now if you live in Brooklyn or any other place that contains an indie store, then you have heard of Oneida. They are a music staple for our generation as they are one of the most creative new bands out there today. Each record that they make takes you on a new direction in sound. On that album the band takes us on an experimental psychedelic rock groove that contains to spark our curiosity in what they are gonna come up with next.

Brah

Cave Singers
"Welcome Joy"

***
Fans of Wilco will enjoy this great wild Americana. The band includes banjos and all within their songs. The songs are well crafted and a nice and soothing listen to chill out to on a cool summer night.

Jack Peñate
"
Everything Is New"

****
When Jack decided to write his sophomore album he scratched his original sound and started completely new with creating a fresh and exciting new sound filled with Brazilian Tropicalia,
Krautrock, New Orleans marching bands, Bashment, Afrobeat,
lo-fi Hop Hop, Gospel, Reggaeton and Philly Soul influences meshed all together. With Paul Epworth on production duties, Jack got an album that is fun and poppy to listen to. This is a record that you could actually dance along to in a club, on the beach, on in your living room. Check out the song “Be The One” for its lively beat and tropical feel that makes me dream of being on a beachside resort with a fruity drink in my hand.

XL Recordings

Junior Boys
"Be Gone Dull Care"

*****
Junior Boys’ last album blew people’s minds with its smooth electronic jazz that you can actually dance to in any club. The band is continuing on with the same formula simply because it works so well. Check out the main single “Hazel” for the album’s highlights. You are assured to hear it in clubs, bars, and fashion galleries all around the world.

Domino Records

Fiery Furnaces
"I’m Going Away"

****
I can’t even remember how many albums this brother and sister band have, but what I do remember is seeing them many times play tiny clubs in the Lower East Side of NYC before the band broke in 2001 and each time was truly amazed with how great they were. And after all of these years the band is still making great albums. With incredibly great songs like; “I’m Going Away” and “Even In The Rain” you would be doing yourself some injustice by not listening to this album.

Thrill Jockey

Ear Pwr
"Super Animal Brothers III"

****
This Baltimore, MD group make super fun glitchy electronic pop that is cute, sweet, catchy, and good to bounce around to all within one album. The band tends to go on a wild experimental trip with electronics at times, so it can often be hard to sit through a whole album. But these three songs will highlight their true talent; “Beam of Light” and “Future Eyes”, and “Diamonds Liquor Leather”.

Carpark Records

Cass McCombs
"Catacombs"

*****
Cass McCombs is finally starting to get the break that he deserves. This is the guy that writes super heartfelt tunes by utilizing everything that is American; blues, americana, country, roots, cajun and even a bit of indie mixed in. Cass wears his heart on his sleeve as each song portrays a new story that will incite curiosity out of any old cat.

Domino Records

Gossip
"Music For Men"

****
After numerous albums on small indie labels, Gossip have finally hit the big time. This is their first major label release and for this one they even got Rick Rubin on production duties. Fans of their last hit “Standing In The Way Of Control” will be happy to hear that the album still contains a strong punk disco feel that you can dance around to. Check out the albums main single “Heavy Cross” first then continue to venture on through the album as pretty much all of the songs are dance hits in the waiting.

Columbia

We Are Country Mice
"Make Your Own Damn Fun"

*****
Originally from Kansas and Wisconsin, We Are Country Mice now reside in a Brooklyn warehouse, playing soulful, high-energy rock and roll. This is their debut single (7” with cd) release that has already sold over 250 copies in one week by word of mouth. Get is now as it will soon become a collector’s item. The quartet create songs that fans of Band of Horses, Black Keys, and My Morning Jacket already have a strong kinship to. Their songs display a tangible musicality: heavy beats thrown by blurring sticks, frantic guitar rhythms, heartfelt lyrics, harmonious warmth, and droning effects. Their live show is an undulating dance of feeling and energy. These two songs are already live crowd favorites that have translated onto vinyl perfectly.

Julian Plenti
"Julian Plenti Is...Skyscraper"

***
While we are awaiting the next Interpol record, their lead singer has had some time on his hands. While he is not djing at his favorite hang out bars in the Lower East Side, he has been busy writing and recordings his solo album. Even though he might be trying to take his music in a new direction, his vocal style is so distinct that you instantly recognize who it is and can align with his songs, so that any Interpol fan will be pleased. Check out the lead songs “Game For Days”, “Fun That We Have”, and “Unwind” for the album highlights.

Matador Records

The Dead Weather
"Horehound"

***
Jack White is truly a genius. Not only for his great songwriting and playing, but for his ability to put great new groups together. This new supergroup brings in Alison from The Kills for a killer vocal style that you’ll instantly love. Their first single, “Treat Me Like Your Mother”, says it all. This is another cool project with Jack White’s stamp on it.

Third Man

La Roux
"La Roux"

****
This new British star is taking the 80’s pretty serious with her love of pop, elecontrica, dance, and r&b by combing them all to make some great songs. Check out the singles, “In It For The Kill”, “Quicksand”, and “Bulletproof” as they will instantly get you on the dance floor. But like many other major label pop acts her album is full of nine other slower filler songs that will most likely be ignored when it comes to the singles. Since her singles are such great songs, we will forgive her for the slower ones and embrace this album for her such strong hits.

Polydor

Kap Bambino
"Blacklist"

*****
This is the second full length from this super charged electro punk UK trio. For those of you that love to go to shows to sweat this is the band for you. Fans of Crystal Castles, Dandi Wind, Dutchess Says, and Klaxons will love this band. Check out the album’s highlight with the dark punk song “Batcaves”. This is truly an amazing album for those of you that enjoy energetic and youthful music.

Because Music

The Smith Westerns
"The Smith Westerns"

****
This Chicago band has made lo-fi skuzzy garage punk that contains a strong 70’s T-Rex styled swagger that is super fun to listen to. With Pitchfork already giving one of the band’s songs the “Best in New Music” tag, they are assumed for some great things to happen. And with an album that is this much fun it is easy to see how.

Hozac

White Denim
"Fits"

***
This sophomore album won’t shock you as the band is not talking discovering or doing anything new, but what they are doing is making music fun again. With an album full of noisey, garage blues the boys sound like they are having a great time. This is the sound of youth culture that truly believes in having a good time.

Full Time Hobby

Pre
"Hope Freaks"

***
Pre is a female fronted experimental noise group from the arty corners of East London. This new album takes on a similar vain to their previous releases. Lots of screeching and screaming vocals topped with scratchy guitars and supper charged drumming. Each song gives off tons of energy and a good vibe for those that love DIY style bands. If you are even lucky enough to catch the band live you’ll be in for a surprise treat from the singer.

Skin Graft

Blacklist
"Midnight Of The Century"

***
Blacklist’s debut album comes a real treat as we’ve been seeing this band play around NYC/Brooklyn for a couple years now. Mixed by Ed Buller(Suede,Pulp,White Lies) Josh Strawn, James Minor, Ryan Rayhill, and Glenn Maryansky have created a terrific album full of dark and epic undertones. Fans of Sisters of Mercy, The Chameleons, and Interpol will strongly be able to embrace songs like “Fight of the Demoiselles” for it’s epic beauty. Unlike many bands of today, the band’s album art even tells a story in two parts from Pieter Schoolwerth’s own oil paintings.

Weird Records

Care Bears on Fire
"Care Bears on Fire"

***
Whenever you hear a mention about bands starting earlier/younger nowadays, this three piece always come to mind. Originally starting at the age of ten, yes that is ten years old, the three of them now only in their early teens have put out their debut album. Filled with teen-angst, these punk-pop songs are super fun numbers for a new teen generation. Listen to “Everybody Else” for the album’s highlight. The song was even featured on a Converse commercial. Catch live at Lollapalooza this summer or hanging out at their favorite pizza shop in Brooklyn.

"Blue Roses"

***
Laura Groves is a female singer / songwriter that sings and plays in a classical style while bringing a modern experimental side to her music. Laura forms the songs of instruments out of her own voice and makes new sounds from them as she learns to play them all. Her voice is tender, elegant, and beautiful like a gipsy angel. Fans of Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, and Reginna Specktor will find her enchanting.

XL Recordings

Stellastarr*
"Civilized"

****
Stellastarr’s third full length takes us back to their beginning pop roots. Flavored with a new-wave, Cure-influenced vocal style, the band gives us a youthful sound that fans of their fist singles like, “My Coco” will be excited to hear again. This album sounds as if the band has found a new fountain of youth and turned up the energy to level 10. It is great to hear the band back doing what they do best, making great pop songs that we can all sing along to.

"Dreaming"

*****
Finally the debut 7” single has come out from Brooklyn’s favorite dream/shoegaze band. For this special treat they give us two new songs, “Dreaming and “Listless”. Both are terrific songs for fans of My Bloody Valentine. Two of the members of this band also play in The Pains of Being Pure At Heart.

Kanine Records

Sonic Youth
"The Eternal"

***
This new album is another solid good release from indie’s masters. Sonic Youth bring you exactly what you want from them; tons of feedback, fuzzy guitars, and raspy vocals. So if you are a big fan of the band, then you’ll totally love this album. If you have never owned a Sonic Youth record before, check out their two best previous albums, “Daydream Nation” and “Goo”.

Pet Shop Boys
"Yes"

****
The Pet Shop Boys have been around since the early 80’s. They know how to write terrific pop hooks. But even though they have been playing and writing songs for that long, the duo still has what it takes to turn out great songs. And this new album is a testament to that. Check out the singles; “Love etc.”, “Did You See Me Coming”, “All Over The World” if you want to get your groove on.

Au Revoir Simone
"Still Night, Still Light"

****
These girls from Brooklyn make some of the prettiest music out there today. Originally formed from just keyboards and vocals, the girls have come a long way. Now instead of just sounding like a band formed to play birthday, house parties, they craft beautiful orchestrated pop that fits perfectly in a Molly Ringwald world. Check out the single “Shadows” for the album highlight.

Our Secret Record Company

Broken Records
"Until The Earth"

**
Fans of The Tindersticks, The National and many other dark, slow, and prodding indie bands might like the Broken Records. Unfortunately I had a hard time really digging this album as it is a bit too slow to get into. But those of you with a ton of patience might want to check them out. There are a lot of interesting lyrics to the songs, but they just don’t have any energy to them to catch my attention.

Discovery
"LP"

****
What happens when one of the guys from Ra Ra Riot and one of the guys from Vampire Weekend come together to make their own band. Well it’s called Discovery and it sounds like a collision of the two bands’ sounds together discovering music on late night studio sessions. These indie bands have taken their pop sound and combined a good amount of electronics to the mix making them sound a bit more experimental and loose. The end result is a fun record to listen to for fans of both bands.

XL Records

Screaming Females
"Power Move"

***
New Jersey underage stars give us their 3rd album to date and their best yet. On this new album you hear a bit of Dinosaur Jr.-esque inspired guitars, screeching female vocals, a bit of Led Zepplin, and a bit of grungey / punk bass riffs that remind you of Primus. Check out the single “Bell” for their catchiest number on the album.

Don Giovanni Records

Miike Snow
"Miike Snow"

**
Miike Snow is a duo from Stockholm that make cheesey 80’s inspired pop that instantly makes you feel like you are in a Chromeo video. The only song on the album that really strikes any cool chord is the lead song “Animal”. It has got just enough of a fun catchy appeal to it that will salvage the band from obscurity. Check out some of the remixes that make the song even more fun.

Downtown Records

Placebo
"Battle For The Sun"

****
Placebo have been around since the early days of Britpop and continue to soldier on with great pop hits. I remember first getting into the band back in 1995 and unlike many bands still like them 14 years later. On this new album the band takes a poppy appeal than they have ever taken before. Check out the songs “Astray Heart” and “Battle for The Sun” for the album’s instant hits.

Dreambrother

Liechtenstein
"Survival Strategies in a Modern World"

***
This all girl twee pop from Sweden came all the way over to play some shows in NY and we were lucky enough to catch their live set at Bruar Falls in Williamsburg. Although their live show didn’t make us go crazy their debut album gives out enough cool and catchy artpop that you can forgive them for their it. Check out the song “Roses In The Dark” for a terrific piece of C-86 style pop.

Slumberland

Official Secrets Act
"Understanding Electricity"

***
This is sweet Euopean pop that is catchy, tender and lovely. The band takes you back to a 90’s indie sound while still keeping it a bit modern. Check out the songs first, “The Girl From The BBC” and “Under The Flight Parth”.

One Little Indian

The Aliens
"Luna"

***
The Aliens consist of ex-members of the Beta Band. So if you were a fan of their previous band than you will instantly like The Aliens as well. Their psych pop takes a chilled out and catchy vibe that sounds all so familiar to their fans. For those of you that do not know the band yet, check out “Magic Man” first as its catchy pop will instantly win you over.

Petrock Recordings

Eels
"Hombre Lobo 12 Songs Of Desire"

***
Yes the Eels are back and yes he still has got some new pop tricks up his sleeves. This time he has grown a new full beard that has inspired the songs on this new album. The songs contain a more laid back approach to them that makes you feel like you are still hanging out in sunny California. Check out “What’s A Fella Gotta Do” and “Beginner’sLuck” for the album’s highlights.

E Works

Manic Street Preachers
"Journal For Plague Lovers"

***
When Rickey Edwards, one of the key members of the band, disappeared in the mid 90’s the band and the world were devastated. They never truly knew what happened to him, but after 15 years of gone missing, his family decided to officially pronounce him dead. Before disappearing Rickey wrote a full album worth of material. But up until now the band kept these songs in secret. Now they are releasing them as they are an integral part of the Manic Street Preachers’ history. This is a true treat for all of their fans.

Columbia

Bachelorette
"My Electric Family"

****
This new album from Bachelorette contains some of the most angelic and gorgeous pop songs that I have heard in a long time. If you want to hear some sweet and beautiful songs then you need to get this album. Check out the song “Mindwrap” first for its catchy and somewhat danceable beat. It is the perfect song to sing along to while riding in your car with the roof top down.

Drag City

Dirty Projectors
"Bitte Orca"

****
By now you already know that every band in Williamsburg loves this band. They all cite them as their favorite band, including our beloved band, Grizzly Bear. This boy / girl crew has a vocal style that reminds us of Antony and the Johnsons. Check out the songs “Stillness In The Move”, “Remade Horizon”, and “Cannibal Resource” first for the album’s highlights.

Domino Records

Dinosaur Jr.
"Farm"

*****
We like many other people fell in love with Dinosaur Jr. when they first came out with “Bug”. But then the album “Green Mind” came out and we got so addicted to the band that we couldn’t stop playing their music on repeat. So it is with great honor to have a new album by the band the that is still making great music that resembles what they did so well back in the 90’s. Fans of the old “Green Mind” album will instantly love songs like “I Want You To Know”. It has got the same dirty guitar fuzz sound that is ever so popular again today.

Fat Possum

Kasabian
"West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum"

*****
Kasabian has come back and dropped the electronics this time to give us a more rock styled approach. Fans of Oasis will be super excited about this new album. Filled with 60’s psychedelic inspired songs like “Thick As Thieves” the band has taken a step back in time to dig up some new sounds. For their lead singles, they still incorporate some of their older harder edged rock sound to make the numbers super catchy. Check out the lead singers, “Vlad The Impaler” and “Fast Fuse”.

Sony

City Center
"City Center"

*****
This debut album is one of the coolest new releases that I have heard in a long time. This Brooklyn duo has conjured up one spirtualized sounding album full of experimental electronics that are at times soothing and then at times extremely trippy. It sounds as if the two of them have crammed all of the best sounds of the last 30 years into one album. All in all this is a great album that needs to be heard.

Type

Future Of The Left
"Travels With Myself And Another"

****
Anyone that is a fan of this band already knows that they used to be called McClusky. With their punk fueled energy and angular guitar riffs they continue to keep their solid fanbase happy. They might not be taking you on any new musical ventures, but at least you know that each new album is guranteed to be good.

4AD

Clues
"Clues"

***
Alden Penner of the Unicorns and Brendan Reed of Arcade Fire have gotten together to form a new indie duo. This debut album won’t blow you away, but if you are a super fan then it’s worth checking out. It reminds me of an early 90’s sound that you could hear on a Superchunk album.

Constellation

The Albertans
"Legends Of Sam Marco"

***
Brooklyn continues to surprise us with new bands. The Albertains are bringing back pop music with strong twee and Brit influences. Fans of Belle and Sebastian and Pulp will find no problem aligning themselves with their catchy, poppy sound.

Ernest Jenning

Grizzly Bear
"Veckatimest"

*****
Grizzly Bear’s third full length is one that shows them maturing well as musicians. These boys have taken their once lo-fi folky sound and made one hugely sounding epic pop record. The songs are stillslow, enchanting, and dreamy, but now contain a stronger pop edge than ever before. Just listen to the hit singles, "Two Weeks" and "Cheerleader". This is another victory for indie and one that artists everywhere will look up to for inspiration for years to come.

Warp

The Warlocks
"The Mirror Explodes"

***
The Warlocks used to be such an exciting band that challenged your musical senses. Like BRMC, Spiritualized, and BJTM they make music that is sonicly spiritual. This new album has still got some great tunes on it but instead of challenging your senses, it soothes them with a dreamy shoegaze vibe that is simply lovely, which is a bit odd for this band.

Tee Pee Records

Intelligence
"Fake Surfers"

****
This West Coast band have been releasing cool lofi skuzzy, guitar fuzz recordings for many years now. But it is now that they have stepped up the plate and made an album that also contains a bit of pop feel to their songs. Now you can actually sing along to their awesome tunes. This is definitely a great album to add to your record collection as this crew combine elements of 50’s girl doo-woop feel to this already great sound.

In The Red

Eminem
"Relapse"

***
Eminem said he was gonna retire, but he couldn’t resist the urge to spit out more rhymes. His head must have been spinning with lyrical poetry. Dirty poetry that is. As this album is full of Marshall’s dirty mind. As a comeback album Eminem gives us some of his funnest skits yet, along with some great rhymes on songs “Old Time’s Sake” (featuring Dr. Dre) and “Crack A Bottle” (featuring 50 Cent and Dr. Dre). The only problem with the album is that it doesn’t contain one big dance hit that hip hop so needs now to make it fun and club friendly. All in all it is still good to her Eminem doing his thing again.

Aftermath

Mika Miko
"We Be XuXa"

***
LA’s underage Downtown punk scene is still going strong and Mika Miko prove it with this new release. Formed around the club, The Smell, the band takes on their own identity by playing music their way. Loud, bratty, messy, and carefree. This female fronted band draw strong comparisons to Bikini Kill and by listening to their shouty songs and guitar riffs it is easy to hear why.

PPM

Pterodactyl
"Worldwild"

****
Pterodactyl’s sound seems to change with each new record that they put out. But one thing that remains constant is the great quality of their songs. On this new album the band takes us on a pychedelic trip with freakout jam songs. The album sounds heavily influenced by 60’s psych, but manages to stay revelant by combing modern electronics and guitar sounds. This album is a modern groovy trip.

Brah

Eat Skull
"Wild and Inside"

****
Portland, Oregon’s own Eat Skull have crafted a most excellent album full of skuzzy punk rock. Combining a country twing with modern punk ethics you get a sound that is refreshingly good. Looks like its time to get on board if you haven’t heard this band yet.

Siltbreeze

Tiga
"Ciao!"

***
Tiga’s new album doesn’t sound like that much of a far venture from his soothing and dance electro sound, and thank god for that. Because with such great songs like “Shoes” you don’t need for him to change what he is doing. “Shoes” will keep you dancing all night long to its sexy female vocals and smooth dance beat. Sometimes things work perfect just the way they are.

Pias

Jason Lytle
"Yours Truly, The Commuter"

****
Jason Lytle as some of you already know was the key person in Grandaddy. Grandaddy put out some of the coolest indie records that our generation was lucky to be a part of. Now that Grandaddy is no longer together, Jason has written his first solo record that, unsurprisingly, sounds like a Grandaddy record. Luckily it is a terrific album full of glorious pop songs that leave your cravings for that Grandaddy sound satisfied. The best song rests in the lead track “Yours Truly, The Commuter” with its instantly upbeat tempo and catchy chorus. It is good to hear that Jason is still hard at work in crafting create pop tunes.

Antifiesta Records

Pete Doherty
"Grace / Wastelands"

****
If you are alive in this day and age you have to know how Pete Doherty is. Well if you don’t then you haven’t been reading the papers, blogs, or didn’t happen to buy any records by The Libertines and Babyshambles. Pete if you still don’t know is the lead singer of these two great British groups. This is his newest solo album produced by Stephen Street. On this album Pete lays his heart out on the table and gives us some of his most profound lyrics. Pete is the master at lofi bedroom style recordings that still contain enough depth to capture your heart.

EMI

Art Brut
"Art Brut vs. Satan"

***
Art Brut make great tunes. This is their third album from one of the UK’s best modern storytellers. This band of misfits totally surprised the industry by actually doing well when everyone told them that they would be a failure. This is another great album, the only problem is that the stories conjure up too many familiar stories that you have heard before.

Downtown Records

Brakes
"Touchdown"

***
Brakes are a UK supergroup that have been putting out a record a year since the Britpop days. Each one contains solid pop rock tunes that are catchy and super fun to sing along to. Check out the singles “Two Shocks” and “Don’t Take Me To Space(Man)” for the album highlights.

Fat Cat

The Procedure Club
"Music For The Leisure Time"

****
We all welcome the resurgence of 90’s indie with wide open arms. Especially when it is done this well. The Procedure Club take their lo-fi recordings in a twee pop direction that garnishes good pop songs. Full of scratchy guitars and catchy choruses they easily draw you into their songs. For a special treat check out the last song “Snowy” that was originally written by Sore Eros.

Series Two Records

Thee Oh Sees
"Help"

***
Thee Oh Sees is John Drywr’s, original the lead singer of The Coachwhips, new band. This is their sophomore album and one that is way more poppy and excessible than The Coachwhips previous songs. Listen to “Ruby Go Home” as this is the poppiest song on the whole album. You can actually sing along to this song. John is still creating great skuzzy, garage rock. This time though he is just letting us in a little more on the fun.

In The Red

Graham Coxon
"The Spinning Top"

****
Graham is truly a talented musician and this solo album cements that fact. While Blur are getting ready to launch their comeback career, Graham still finds time to give us a new album full of lo-fi heartfelt pop tunes that are lyrically creative, yet easy to sing and hum along to. Way to go Graham. This album is simply terrific.

Transgressive

Maximo Park
"Quicken The Heart"

**
What ever happened to all of the energy that Paul, the lead singer, used to belt out in his songs. This album leaves all of his youthful energy at the door and instead gives us an album full of simple pop tunes that sound like Shed Seven b-sides. The only saving grace on this album is the single “The Kids Are Sick Again”, which is nowhere as good as anything the band first created on their debut album.

Warp

Golden Silvers
"True Romance"

***
Golden Silvers make fun, dance indie pop that takes on various musical shapes. At first they take an 80’s retro dance trip, then they venture on a psychedelic pop trip like MGMT, then lastly they venture off on a soft reggae vibe that got Vampire Weekend so much attention. If the band would focus more on the retro 80’s dance feel that they captured on the lead single “True Romance” they will be destined for great things. This lead single is an instant hit that you can sing and dance along to all day/night long.

XL Recordings

The Maccabees
"Wall Of Arms"

***
The Maccabees make cool Brit-pop-rock, but unfortunately they don’t sound original enough or make any songs that standout enough to warrant any true celebrations. Their strength is in their high energy and live shows where they know how to get the crowd up in arms with excitement. If only they had more songs that were more rememberable.

Fiction

Bat For Lashes
"Two Suns"

*****
Bat For Lashes is the genius of Natasha Khan and her crafty lyrics. This female singer knows how to charm your eyes and ears off with her soft, beautiful, and mystic music. She has the voice of an angle that you can hear instantly on the first single “Daniel”. Fans of Bjork, PJ Harvey, and St. Vincent will totally adore Nataha’s music as much as we do.

Echo

Passion Pit
"Manners"

*****
You normally don’t hear about a ton of great music coming out of Boston. But Passion Pit are a rare circumstance. They’ve taken glitchy electronics, mixed it was pop and made some of the most fun songs that you can actually dance too. The highlights of this album are “Little Secrets”, “The Reeling”, and “Sleepyhead” which was on their debut EP. Like MGMT and Chairlift, 2009 could be the year for Passion Pit, so keep an eye/ear out for them.

Frenchkiss Records

Hatcham Social
"You Dig The Tunnel, I’ll Hide The Soil"

****
Glasgow is well known for putting out a ton of cool bands, so it is no surprise that Hatcham Social come from that same art school capital as Franz Ferdinand. But this band digs deeper into the post punk catalog then many others by sounding more like early 80’s dancey twee pop that you could find on Postcard Records releases. Listen to songs “Murder In The Dark” and “So So Happy Making” for the album highlights.

TBD Records

St. Vincent
"Actor"

*****
St. Vincent has truly made one of 2009’s most beautiful albums. And all of the great press attention that she has been getting is well deserved. Her angelic voice and clever lyrical sense marks her as a true modern romantic poet. Listen to “The Strangers” and “Marrow” for a real treat. Fans of Fiest will love this album.

Peaches
"I Feel Cream"

***
This is more cool electro from the queen of sleaze. Yes that is right, Peaches is back with another album full of hard rocking, dirty dance treats. She even managed to make an album cover that isn’t super dirty, but more stylized. For the album highlights check out the songs; “More” , “I Feel Cream”, “Show Stopper”, and “Trick or Treat”.

XL Recordings

Camera Obscura
"My Maudlin Career"

****
This Swedish band has actually been around for a good 10 years at least, putting out the same style of indie twee pop the whole time. But thank goodness that they are super good at what they do. Each song is a poppy delight that any indie kid would love. So if you were a fan of indie in the 80’s, 90’s, or even now, then you’ll most likely love this new album too. Check out “French Navy” and “Swans” for the album highlights. If they are not already on your playlist, I’m sure they will be soon.

The Vaselines
"Enter The Vaselines"

*****
I first stumbled upon this band totally by accident. I had this Superchunk album that my friend desperately wanted. I wasn’t totally in love with it so I offered to trade it to him for something. He pulled out this album by The Vaselines and said, “here you can have this record. Its an wimpy indie band so you’ll love it.” And you know what, he was totally right. I listened to that album like 200 times and totally totally loved it. I still love it. Back then it was limited so it was hard to find, but now you can get the same album along with 36 other tracks total, 3 lp/cd collection. But the old original songs still sound the best. Classics like “You Think You’re A Man”, “Son Of A Gun”, and “Monsterpussy” sound just as fresh and prevalent as they did back in the early 90’s.

Sub Pop

Pink Mountaintops
"Outside Love"

****
The Pink Mountaintops is the solo project from that band that everyone loves, called Black Mountain. Yeah you remember them. They put out cool hillbilly, country, folk, pop that people have been enjoying for the past 5 to 6 years now. But with this band, he gets to experiment a bit more with their tender and spacey side. Just listen to the lead song “Outside Love”. It sounds like a mixture between Spiritualized and Bon Iver. It is slow, spaced out and totally lovely. But the real highlight comes with “The Gayest of Sunbeams” for its euphoric anthems and up tempo beats.

Jaguguwar

Psychedelic Horseshit
"Golden Oldies"

***
Another super cool release from Brooklyn’s lofi, experimental, noise rockers. This album is filled with so many great songs that you can’t choose just one. So you’ll have to go buy the whole record to truly get a proper idea of what the band is like. And to see what great new sounds are continuing to come out of this neighborhood.

Wasted Vinyl Records

Jarvis Cocker
"Further Complications"

***
Jarvis, the man behind one of Britpop’s most famous bands Pulp, is back with a new solo record that fans will be excited about. This time Jarvis sounds like he has been listening to too many grunge albums as he recruited Steve Albini to produce this album. Listening to the songs “Further Complications”, “Angela”, and “Caucasian Blues” you can instantly hear the producers influence in Jarvis’ new rougher sound. He now sounds a bit more like Art Brut, a rough and raw punk poet, over his sweet and romantic Brit leanings.

The Morning After Girls
"The General Public"

****
The Morning After Girls are a group that include members from New York and Australia. This is their newest EP that takes elements of indie, shoegaze, and dance to make one of the catchest songs out today, “The General Public”. With wailing guitars, sweet vocals, and 90’s dance beats you easily hear this song packing the dance floor in indie clubs around the world.

Self Released

The Legends
"Over and Over"

****
Sweden’s indie legend has come back with a new album full of well crafted shoegaze songs. Leaving their previous new wave sound, the band has ventured in time from the 80’s to the 90’s by creating some terrific indie songs for fans of twee pop and shoegaze alike that fit perfectly with today’s 90’s retro revival.

Labrador

The Lava Children
"The Lava Children"

****
These two Okies recorded this debut album in a secluded mountain fortress in Altadena, CA. The album is full of twisted vocal tales of mystical travels that they never took. While listening to “I Am a Pony” you get the feeling that you are truly listening to something completely new and inspiring. Mixing elements that you can find in the work of other musicians like Syd Barrett, Black Mother Super Rainbow, The Breeders, and Bat For Lashes you know that you are on a musical pop adventure to a far away fairyland.

Graveface

Cage The Elephant
"Cage The Elephant"

**
70’s style garage rock never seems to go out of style as people still love to rock out to old style guitar riffs. Cage The Elephant is no different. This debut album fills your ears with exactly that. Eleven songs of heavy guitar riffs, funky basslines, and catchy choruses that fans of Red Hot Chilipeppers, The Datsuns, and Wolfmother will enjoy.

Jive

Crocodiles
"Summer Of Hate"

***
This duo from San Diego has one of the coolest live shows that any duo can possible pull off. Their Jesus and Mary Chain inspired tunes are a ton of fun with an added garage rock flavor and a ton of fuzzed out guitars. The beauty of it is that they achieve all of this with only one guitar, vocals, and a sampler. This album unfortunately does not showcase their full talent but when you listen to “I Wanna Kill” you’ll totally fall in love with them.

Fat Possum

The Fresh & Onlys
"The Fresh & Onlys"

***
This is the debut album from these San Francisco lofi-psych pop rockers. Listening to the lead song “Peacock Wing” makes me feel that I’ve discovered a lost 4 track recording from Big Star. But if you think that you are hearing voices don’t worry you’re not, it’s just the psych pop recordings.

Castle Face Records

Sore Eros
"Second Chants"

****
Sore Eros is the musical project of Gary War, Nick Brannigan, Paul A. Rosales, Jeff Morkeski, and Kurt Vile. Fans of Ariel Pink, Panda Bear, and Grizzly Bear will love this album full of dreamy folk songs. Each song contains whispered vocals and washed out guitars that give it a lofi yet psychedelic feel to them.

SHDWP

Ganglians
"Ganglians"

****
This is the debut album from Sacramento’s own lo-fi art-poppers. Listening to the instantly catchy song “Hair” makes me feel like this band could of existed back in the late 80’s indie twee pop era, except that their lofi twee–ness has too much of a modern twist on the equation to classify them as just another retro band. There is something special inside this album that is just aching to come out. And is simply a matter of you taking the time to listen to these songs to discover what that is.

Woodsist

Stupid Party
"Stupid Party"

***
The early 90’s had a massive influence on what young bands are now doing in Brooklyn and you can clearly hear it in all of their albums. Taking old grunge and lo-fi indie influence to a new extreme, Stupid Party is creating a new era of experimental noise punk. Their music is heavy on the sludge and filled with pop hooks that will get you amped all night long.

Freedom School Records

Japandriods
"Japandriods"

*****
This Toronto two-piece has created an album that harks back to early 90’s guitar rock. Bringing comparisons to Sonic Youth, Sebadoh, and Dinosaur Jr., these boys take us on a somewhat nostalgic trip to the past, yet still manage to keep their sound fresh and exciting with adding more noise to the equation. Check out “Young Hearts Spark Fire” for a true sing along anthem. Catch them live July 10 at our own party here in Williamsburg at the Cameo Gallery.

Unfamiliar

Thunderheist
"Thunderheist"

***
This Canadian duo have started to garnish a good amount of attention because they know how to make people party. Filled with hip hop beats and dirty party lyrics this boy girl duo make partying fun again. “Listen to the singles “Sweet 16” and “Anthem” to get the party started now.

Big Dada

The Rifles
"Great Escape"

****
The Rifles channel the lost spirit of Britpop mixed with elements of The Jam. And you can clearly hear it in their catchy songs “Science In Violence”, “The Great Escape”, and “Sometimes”. Each one is a terrific song that you can clearly sing and dance along to.

679

Twisted Wheel
"Twisted Wheel"

**
Twisted Wheel got so much hype in the UK papers that we got super excited for this band. But only “Lucy The Castles” and “We Are Us” are even worth listening to on this album. The rest of the songs are super simple rock songs that no one needs to hear. Don’t believe the hype, this is not the next Oasis.

Columbia

White Rabbits
"It’s Frightening"

****
We all love this band as we’ve watched them grow from playing small clubs to selling out huge venues. With their catchy indie tunes that resemble Spoon, Radiohead, and The Walkmen you an easy see and hear why they have gotten so popular. But you have to see this band live to truly understand why we have all gone goo goo over this band. They truly bring one of the coolest live experiences out to the stage that you have ever seen.

TBD Records

Fly Girlz
"Da’ Brats Form Da’Ville"

****
This is super rad modern day Brooklyn hip hop gone experimental. Image what our world would be like if more schools funded music projects like this. Seven different organizations got together to help make these recordings happen. These eight songs recorded by the guys from Exceptor and five 12-14 year old girls are truly magnificient. They have channeled a lost art of 80’s hip hop that is truly missed today. Check out the lead tune “Fly Girlz” to hear some amazing music.

True Panther Sounds

Drink Up Buttercup

"Farewell Captain/Sosey and Dosey"

*****
Philadelphia’s Drink Up Buttercup's debut US single showcases their Beatles meets tin-pan alley, carnival soundtracking. They got tons more tunes in the can and are currently working on their debut album, but until they finish their full length album they have given us this delicious two song 7” and digital single with their already crowd favorites “Farewell Captain” and “Sosey and Dosey”.
The 7 inch single is colored red vinyl and comes with mp3 download code. The band is already a favorite of Stereogum and soon to be yours.

Kanine Records

Super Furry Animals
"Dark Days / Light Years"

***
The Welsh crew are back with another new release of crazy pscyh pop. These boys are totally dependable to give us great new tunes. This album contains a bit more slower tunes than they normally give us, but these trippy songs are still super cool. Listen to “Where Do You Wanna Go?” and you’ll see how cool these boys still are.

Rough Trade

The Bishops
"For Now"

***
This three piece make simple poppy songs that fans of The Jam will love. Add a bit of garage, Britpop, and punk to the mix and you have a good record for the modern age.

W2 Records

Gliss
"Devotion Implosion"

****
Gliss’s new album brings us more of what we love, a 90’s retro shoegaze indie sound that is super upbeat and topped with lush vocals. With an album full of love songs and bits of electronica thrown in you can easily fall for this band. Fans of Lush, Smashing Pumpkins will enjoy these top album singles “Morning Light” and “29 Act Of Love”.

Cordless

Cut In The Hill Gang
"Hung Up"

***
Yos the gang from Soledad Brothers are back with a new band, but they have maintained that great soulful garage sound. Listen to “Sunnyside” and “Johnny’s Q. Dream” and you’ll hear some of the best modern soulful blues around

Stag-O-Lee

Talk Normal
"Secret Cog"

****
Brooklyn’s own Andrya Ambro and Sarah Register are keeping art punk alive and well with this five song debut EP. Each song is a fun, noisey, and simple angular punk number that borders on highly experimental while still maintaining a catchy presence. Keep an ear out for these girls cause if this EP is anything to go by, you’ll be hearing a lot more from them.

Just For The Hell Of It Records

The Coathangers
"Scramble"

****
Atlanta, GA likes to keep the party going all year round. And The Coathangers make it easy to join in on the fun. This group of girls is taking elements of punk, 60’s doowoop, and experimental noise to make a sound that makes you just want to party on down. With their snappy, shoutty, and silly lyrics you you’ll want to grab your PBR and party on in your converse.

Suicide Squeeze

Dan Deacon
"Bromst"

***
Everyone is always freaking out over this one man musical machine. He makes super fun, arty, and hyper laptop music that is tons of fun to party down to. The other problem is that this new album doesn’t capture as much energy as his debut album did. But regardless of his recordings it is still truly amazing how Dan Deacon knows how to get the crowd going.

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele
"The Good Feeling Muic Of"

****
Folk music is never going to go away. It is just going to continue to take on new shapes and forms as the years go by and youngsters mix multiple musical forms. With that in mind this folky should not be overlooked as his album gives us some of the sweetest twee folk/pop that you can also sing along to. Fans of Ariel Pink should take note.

Paw Tracks

Doves
"Kingdom of Dust"

****
Doves fourth album is an epic beauty and one well worth waiting for. Manchester’s best sonic band has one of the most uplifting albums of the year. Full of beautifully crafted songs that will continue to sound fresh in your head for years to come. Make sure you also get the singles as they are full of terrific hidden gems that we call b-sides.

Kingdom of Dust

The Rakes
"Klang"

***
This third album by UK’s skinniest indie boys is a bit of a disappointment. Their debut album had all the perfect dance rock tunes to keep you up all night long, but this album seems to be lacking in that category. The only half descent song seems to be “That’s The Reason”. Maybe the band has matured too much to continue to make the same fun dance style pop, but this slower version doesn’t satisfy us as well. For fans of Maximo Park, Franz Ferdinand, and The Futureheads.

Screen Vinyl Image
"Interceptions"

****
Husband and wife duo Jake & Kim Reid give us their debut full length album filled with heavy electronic shoegaze that will make your head spin. Their dark 90’s sound borders on a strong love of bands like Curve, Suicide, JAMC, and My Bloody Valentine. With overly load guitars and sonic pedals you can tell that their past experience playing in the bands Alician Blue, Skywave, and Ceremony has rubbed off on their present sound. This is an excellent album to listen to on your headphones as the sound seems to travel around in your head throughout each song.

Custom Made Music

Silversun Pickups
"Swoon"

***
Finally Silversun Pickups have given us their sophomore album. Their debut album blew us away with their strong love of early Smashing Pumpkins and 90’s guitar rock. The only problem with this new album is that they gave us too much of a familiar sound to their debut album. Don’t get me wrong this is another good album, but it would be a lot more exciting if they mixed their sound up a bit. Listen to “Panic Switch” and “Soft Of” first.

Dangerbird

Phoenix
"“Wolfgang Amadeus”"

****
Everyone loves this French band. They make indie fun all over again like it was 1999 and with great songs like “Liztomania” and “1901” you can easily see why. There songs are light, poppy, dancey, and instantly fun. This is an album definitely worth checking out.

Astralwerks

Kurt Vile
"Constant Hitmaker"

****
Kurt Vile is truly a modern folk genius. He simply knows how to capture time and turn his lyrics into musical poetry very simply with his lo-fi recordings. “Constant Hitmaker” is by far his best record out of all three that we have managed to collect so far. Listening to “Freeway” makes you feel like you’re free as a bird sailing along the road side with the top down with no worries in the world. Expect a ton more from this guy as each record is a fabulous treasure.

Woodsist

Chain And The Gang
"Down With Liberty…Up With Chains"

***
Ian Svenonius, formerly of Weird War and The Make Up, is now back with a new band that personifies his love of old soul and R&B. On this new record Ian portrays an artist locked up in jail and what he does with the time left that he has inside. Not only do you get some great bluesy swamp rock tunes with the songs “Chain Gang Theme” and “Unpronounceable Name”, but you also get some hearfelt stories in the form of an interview with him on the inside. It is good to hear that Ian still has a strong creative side within his music.

K Recs

Fever Ray
"Fever Ray"

****
It makes me wonder why they needed to make this a solo album by one half of The Knife, as it basically sounds just like a Knife album. It is just a bit slower and darker. Whatever the reason may be it doesn’t really matter as this album is terrific. There is no instant hit on here, but as a whole it is one terrific album to listen to. Filled with dark and spooky electronics you’ll be excited to hear this art school girl’s new sounds.

Mute

The Antlers
"Hospice"

****
The Antlers is a huge surprise to us, as it turns out the singer was an intern for Kanine Records that we really liked. Ian is a super nice youngster that is still in college why also recording his own solo music. But after tiring of playing solo he formed a full band and started playing around the Brooklyn area. His debut full-length album is one that he wrote about his girlfriend that has been battling cancer for years now. She is constantly in and out of hospitals and bed ridden. Ian’s lyrics are super heart ridden and sad as he sings about watching his lover in and out of pain. The album tends to remind us of a bit like Grizzly Bear with its atmospheric tendencies and soft lyrical whispers. With a ton of hype of this super strong album you be seeing The Antlers get a formal release soon. But for those that can’t wait buy the album now directly from the band.

The Soundtrack Of Our Lives
"Communion"

****
TSOOL continue to make great records with each new release. This is the kind of band that you can depend on to always supply a familiar and fun rock sound. Filled with prog, psych, pop rock the band has give us a double album of 24 songs. The only problem is that all of them are so good that it is hard to find your favorites here from this Swedish band.

Yep Roc

The Von Bondies
"Love Hate And Then Theres You"

**
When The Von Bondies first came out with their debut album on Sympathy For The Record Industry we totally feel in love with their rare garage rock sound. They were shouty, fun, youthful, and raw. But now they have stripped all of their interesting traits that we loved and given us a simple and straight up rock sound that borders on the cheesy side. But if you get past all that and listen carefully to “This Is Our Perfect Crime”, Pale Bride” and “21st Birthday” you’ll find yourself humming along to these tunes.

Major Domo

The Whitest Boy Alive
"Rules"

***
This is the sophomore album from ½ of Kings Of Convience. Unfortunately the first album was a lot better as it contained a bit more upbeat songs. Trying to combine a strong disco flavor to twee pop really only works when the songs get you dancing. This is still a cool album, but the majority of the songs are just too slow for what it feels like they are trying to achieve. Listen to “Dead End” and “Courage” first for the albums highlights.

Bubbles Records

Tamaryn
"Led Astray Washed Ashore"

****
Tamaryn makes very cool new wave music from the dark echobellys of New York and San Francisco. She is an extreme beauty that has conjured the spirit of Sioux Sixx and made it more modern. “Return To Surrender” even takes this beauty’s vocals to the dance floor in the form of a love song that could of easily appeared on the soundtrack of Sixteen Candles. It is truly an echanting song of elegance and love. It is simply just one beautiful song.

Troubleman Unlimited

Sin Fang Bous
"Clangour"

***
Sin Fang Bous is the solo project by Sindri from Iceland. Fans of Mum will totally love his glitchy electronic pop. Sindri contains a strong folk edge hidden underneath all of his electronic samples that is truly beautiful. The best way to enjoy this album is to lay back and soak in all of his magically songs in as you relax on the couch or bed. Each song will enhance your pleasure senses as your body relaxes to his soothing sounds.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"It's Blitz!"

*****
Finally the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back. And what an amazing return to form they have given us. This album takes on a more mainstream and dancy feel than anything that they have done before. It is a lot more simple and catchy, but the songs are so much fun with anthem style vibe that you can’t help but love them. Already the first single “Zero” is an instant hit with its melancholy 1990’s sound. It is when you get to song two that the album starts to really soar and you hear the new dancefloor hit of 2009. This song will be played at every bar and club around the world. Well at least it will till the end of this year. And that is a great thing in today’s short attention span.

Interscope

I.U.D.
"The Proper Sex"

**
For those of you that love traditional pop music stay far away from I.U.D.’s debut album, because this female duo forgot the normal formation of a pop song. Instead they have chosen to make an album full of left-field, arty, noise, experimental songs. With one of the members being a key musician in Gang Gang Dance you can easily understand why. Check out “Daddy” and “Girls Just Wanna” for the album highlights.

The Social Registry

The Thermals
"Now We Can See"

****
We love love love The Thermals and with each new release it is super easy to hear why. Even though the band has moved on from Sub Pop to Kill Rock Stars their sound has remaned the same with punky guitars and ironic and spikey lyrics. Check out “Now We Can See” first as this song instantly stands out due to its catchy chorus. Thermals!

Kill Rock Stars

Cryptacize
"Mythomania"

***
Sweet, tender, and precious, Cryptacize make music that is eas to cherish. Their songs are soft, delicate, and beautiful gems that will warm your heart. Once you listen to “New Spell” you’ll smirk in delight. Then “Blue Tears” will come on and you’ll truly fall in love with this twee, psych pop song. Cryptacize could instantly be the face of the indie twee world along with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

Asthmatic Kitty

The Horrors
"Primary Colours"

***
Gone is the garage stomping flavor that The Horrors displayed so well for their love of the 60’s bands like The Sonics. Now they have taken on a lo-fi new-wave approach that doesn’t seem as exciting, but it still garnishing them a bit of attention with “Scarlet Fields” terrific take on an old lost song of C86 dark twee pop.

XL Recordings

King Khan & The Shrines
"What Is?!"

****
King Khan is back with another terrific album from his band The Shrines. As usual this album is filled with a huge party garage rock flavor that spills out his love of rock n’ roll. Now residing in Atlanta, GA King Khan gives us a bit of southern love with his new release that helps to add a bit of new juice to his alreahis already great sound.

Vice Records

PJ Harvey & John Parish
"A Woman A Man Walked By"

***
We aren’t big fans of John Parish, but anything that PJ Harvey touches is good to us. So it is always exciting to hear what she has next. Her voice is like a twisted angel in waiting. “Black Hearted Love” is the top song on this album with its deep hearted and soulful vocals. The rest of the album tends to be a bit too slow to create mass excitement, but still contains some beautiful songs for those of you with a good attention span.

Island

MSTRKRFT
"Fist of God"

***
This Canadian duo is back with another album to get you on the dance floor. And with the hit single “Bounce” it is easy to do so. This album takes on many different styles with some songs going in an electro direction while many others take on a new hip hop flavor that indie kids all over are loving nowadays. This is not their best album to date, but still contains some fun jams to party down to.

Dim Mak / Downtown

Vampire Hands
"E.P.S."

***
The Midwest isn’t usually known for producing top bands, but there are occasions when you get a nice surprise. Vampire Hands give us that nice surprise with the terrifice pop single “Greasy Hair”. The rest of the album tends to be too experimental and noisey to really make a large impact, but it can still incite a strong bit of interest.

Nero’s Neptune

Wavves
"Wavvves"

*****
Wavves has created one of the coolest solo albums of 2009 that sounds like a full band is playing out in a club. Nathan creates his fuzzed out 1990’s influenced guitar all in his bedroom yet his music has caused so much fuss that he has been summoned to that stage in such high demand that he has inlisted a full band to play live. Fans of Dinosaur Jr. will be super excited to hear Nathan’s music. Check out “To The Dregs”, “So Bored”, “California Goths”, and “Beach Demon” first for the album highlights.

Fat Possum

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds
"Dracula Boots"

****
Kid Congo knows how to make music fun by mixing elements of garage, funk, disco, and a bit of cabaret in there for a bit of a laugh. Check out the single “I Found A Peanut” and you’ll easily be laughing along as you dance all night long.

In The Red

Royksopp
"Junior"

***
Royksopp has given us another album full of dance floor pleasure. On this album they enlist some cool guest singers including; Lykke Li, Robyn, Karin, and Anneli. The best songs are “This Must Be It” and “Tricky Tricky” for their dark electro feel that resembles The Knife. This album won’t blow your mind, but it does contain enough of a fun edge to keep you entertained.

Wall Of Sound

Odawas
"The Blue Depths"

***
Odawas give us lovely atmospheric music that is dreamy and full of shoegave inspired songs. Fans of Slowdive and Siqur Ros will instantly like this band.

Jagjaguwar

Lotus Plaza
"The Floodlight Collective"

***
This is the debut solo album from Lockett Pundt, who also plays in the Atlanta band, Deerhunter. You can hear a similar musical style to Deerhunter here on the album. Topped with a heavy psych rock feel, the album takes on a highly experimental feel that is way tripped out, spacey and fun to listen to. It’s the perfect kind of music to listen to while relaxing and letting your mind wonder.

Kranky

Kurt Vile
"God Is Saying This To You..."

*****
Kurt Vile is a bedroom lo-fi solo artist that is already becoming a cult legend. He has released numerous records on cdrs and hip labels like Woodsist. This Mexican Summer release marks his first official full album release on vinyl. If you haven’t gotten this record yet, you are missing out as it sold out in 2 days after its release date. Besides his sought after recordings, Kurt Vile is an amazing live act that you can never get tired of seeing as each live show takes on a new form. Big things are happening for this artist as he is soon to release more records on Woodsist and Matador Records.

Mexican Summer

Surf City
"Surf City EP"

*****
This is one of the best six song EPs that I have heard in ages. Combining a love of Jesus and Mary chain with a Billy Childish garage rock beat, this Irish band has created some of the most fun and catchy songs that I have heard in ages. Just listen to “Dick Shakers Union” and you’ll instantly be hooked to this dirty shoegaze pop masterpiece. Now if we could only have some more songs please.

1990s
"Kicks"

***
1990s make simple and fun rock music that you can instantly sing along to. Their debut album had such fun and catchy songs that you couldn’t help but love the band as you sang “You Are Supposed To Be My Friend”. And now with this ablum you will singing along to “The Box” as its catchy rockness will remind you of the youthful days of Supergrass.

Jessie Evans
"Is It Fire?"

****
Jessie Evans is truly a musical genius. Having released numerous records on various hip indie labels like; Cochon Records, Troubleman Unlimited, and GSL she also fronted some of the most avant guard groups including; The Vanishing, Autonervous, and Subtonix. After relocating to Berlin, she has taken her love of no-wave and afro-beat and added a world music flavor to the mix. This is her debut solo album that brings a wide variety of musical loves to the mix. Recording in Mexico you can hear her strong Latin beat influence topped by her strong pop lyrics. The songs feature live drums and percussion by Toby Dammit (Iggy Pop, Swans) and guest musicians Budgie (The Creatures, Siouxsie and The Banshees), Martin Wenk (Calexico), and Namosh. Recorded in part by Thomas Stern (Einstürzenden Neubauten, Crime and The City Solution) and mixed/ co-produced in Tijuana by Pepe Mogt (Nortec Collective). Check out the lead songs “Let Me In” and “Scientist of Love” first, these two songs will give any fan of James Chance, Lizzy Descloux, and Siouxsie & The Banshees the shivers with excitement.

The Beets
"Spit In The Face Of People Who Don’t Want To Be Co"

****
This is the debut album from NY’s favorite lo-fi surf garage pop band. These three boys are out to make music that truly speaks from the heart. They give us huge blasts of energy out of their homemade instruments producing one hell of a good time. With a band that has more shows than any other band, you can’t help but not see them play live. Expect tons more from this band as they are already recordings their sophomore album now.

Captured Tracks

Strange Boys
"And Girls Club"

****
This is the Strange Boys sophomore album and one that sees them follow in the same footsteps as their debut. But that is not a bad thing when you make cool country, soulful, garage rock. This is the kind of music that helps you get going in the night and gives you the confidence to hit on that girl standing by the punch bowl. Check out the song “Woe Is You And Me” for its catchy chorus.

In The Red

The Veils
"Sun Gangs"

The Veils make dark, deep, and epic music that digs deep into your soul. The only problem is that the music simply doesn’t stick in your head long enough to become rememberable.

Miss Kitten and The Hacker
"Two"

***
Miss Kitten first came out early 2000 with an icy cool electro sound that helps champion the early electroclash scene. But now that that sound is gone she has come back with a new approach to dance music. The only problem is that her songs now sound like 1980’s house re-runs without the early coolness that she used to bring to the table. Check out the single “21000 Dreams” first as this song hits home first.

Astralwerks

Cymbals Eat Guitars
"Why There Are Mountains"

*****
Cymbals Eat Guitars got the best in new music tag on Pitchfork and they totally deserve it as this album hits right at home with what we love. With a strong take on the 1990’s indie sound, CEG have captured what we love out of the early grunge era of Dinosaur Jr., Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, and Firehose. Check out “And The Hazy Sea” and you’ll instantly fall just in love with this band as we have.

Holiday For Strings
"Two Of You"

*****
What happens when you put five Sweden guys together with a strong love of dance, experimental, and pop music? The answer is simple, you get an amazing single called "Two Of You. Its dark, atmospheric, yet dancey vibe set a perfect mood for a dark and arty dance floor. Holiday For Strings consists of John, from Peter, Bjorn, and John, Pontus, from Theives Like Us, along with Magnus, Erik, and Oscar, all from other previous Swedish bands. This is their debut EP for Kanine Records and one that comes in the form of a limited edition double gatefold 7"/digital release. Backed by two other dark and atmospheric songs "Light Years Ahead" and "Love" you get the feeling that the boys have been listening to a lot of Can records. Yet they also tell me that they are highly influenced by the new Italio Disco scene sprouting out in the French clubs. Toxic Avenger also adds a bouncing electro remix of the main song for added dance floor pleasure. Be on the lookout for this band as this song is too good to keep hidden for long.

Kanine Records

Micachu
"Jewellery"

****
Micachu wrote and recorded this album all on her own then recruited some friends to play live. But it is within these glitchy electronic songs that you can find some real genius inside. They contain a strong experimental side while still giving you a good time. Check out these songs “Vulture” and “Golden Phone”.

Knight School
"The Poor And The Needy Need To Party"

****
2009 was the year that everyone feel in love with twee-pop and the classic 90’s indie sound. When The Pains of Being Pure At Heart can sell out a 500 capacity venue, kids are collecting limited edition 7”s, and everyone is wearing cardigans again, you know that music has gotten good again. And it’s with bands like Knight School that are championing this sound that make it so great again. Their happy, poppy, and fun tunes shine throughout the whole album. Listen to “Pregnant Again” and you will hear great songs that remind you of the days of indie greats like Heavenly.

Woods
"Songs Of Shame"

****
Woods have been playing the DIY scene around Brooklyn for a couple of years now and have released a lot of albums on hip DIY labels like Woodsist. This even band features members of various bands like Meneguar. But it wasn’t until this album that they truly caught our eye/ear. Songs like “Rain On” take on a super catchy tweeness that instantly makes your ears fall in love. We saw them play at Monster Island not too long ago and our mouths were down on the ground in shock with how good they sounded. So its no surprise that you soon people will be keeping a close eye/ear out for this band.

Black Lips
"200 Million Thousand"

***
The Black Lips are so much fun that you have to collect all of their albums. Check out “Short Fuse” first as this song is the most excessible track from the album. But even if you don’t end up loving this album you can be rest assured that they’ll be another one in six months time as they truly are that prolific.

The Vandelles
"Del Black Aloha"

*****
The Vandelles new album is twelve songs of sonic guitar fuzz with a swinging Beach Boys flavor. These four Brooklynites have been cool shoegaze inspired rock for the past couple of years now, that has become a huge favorite among us here at Crashin’ In and many local NYer’s. Their dreamy songs make you feel like you are on a sunny beach in the 1950’s while hanging with a crew of surf buddies and swinging gals. This band loves heavy effects pedals and while you can hear it within each song, the songs contain a strong pop vocal sense that makes them easy to singalong to. Fans of A Place To Bury Strangers, JAMC, and The Beach Boys will enjoy this album. It’s a real treat.

Metric
"Fantasies"

****
Pretty much every indie kid nows about this Canadian band. They had the great hit “Monster Hospital”. Remember the great MSKRFT remix that was done with this song. It instantly became an indie dance floor hit. Well this album contains that same feel with the album’s best song “Gold Guns Girls”. This is by far the album’s best song with “Gimme Sympathy” following in it’s footsteps very closely. All in all it is good to have Metric back making fun music that we can dance and fall in love to with.

Metric International Music

The Datsuns
"Headstunts"

***
You would never believe that this is The Datsuns’s fourth record. We first feel in love with The Datsuns when they gave us the super catchy and rhythmic song “Harmonic Generator”. This song was laden in 70’s classic rock that contained such an amazing stomping beat that you had to have it. Now the band is back with another cool rock record, but the only problem is that they forgot to include any songs contain that same catchy groove that made Iggy Pop’s “I Wanna Be Your Dog” so good.

Cooking Vinyl

Blue Jungle
"Baby Don't Cry"

****
Blue Jungle has made garage rock fun again. But this isn’t just another normal garage band. This two girl, two boy band combine doo-wop vocals with lo-fi recordings on this debut album. One of the coolest things about this band is not just their crazy names (Lately Blu Blu, Thundertube, Nosebleed, Cory Hurricane, Paley King, and Yayo), but their ability to write great songs like “Mean Things” .

Antifiesta Records

Crystal Antlers
"Tentacles"

****
“Tentacles” is Crystal Antlers debut full length album and one that doesn’t disappoint. Within this album they fill our need for everything punk, prog, screamy, experimental, apocalyptic, and a bit pop all in one. Their use of soaring and scrachy vocals creates a new and fun sound for the punk world. But these are not your average punks. These California boys grew up on the beach and still reside in their native Long Beach surroundings. They may have a punk spirit, but you will never meet a group of more polite and sophisticated characters that love the simply things in life, like the enjoyment of people’s company or the love of music. And their love of music shines well within this album.

Touch & Go

Telepathe
"Dance Mother"

***
We’ve always loved Telepathe. They even played two of our parties once and are tons of fun live. This female duo put a huge challenge on their shoulders by combining electronic, hip hop, indie, and experimental samples together to make a mystifying, atmospheric, and dancy sound. At times it comes off so amazingly well that you can’t stop listening to their songs. Take the lead songs off of this debut album for example; “So Fine” and “Chrome’s On It”. Both of them hit as amazing examples of Telepathe’s genius. The other songs on the album seem to take one a more slow and chilled out atmospheric sound that is more meant for relaxing in your room as your mind expands with the music.

Larry Tee
"Club Badd"

***
Larry Tee is one of NYC’s most creative DJs and promoters that you are ever gonna meet. He continually creates new musical sounds and scenes that kids look up to all over the world. So it is no surprise that people look forward to what he is releasing next. This album doesn’t necessary take you on a new musical journey but still has some great electro style jams on it. Listen to “Noughties” and “I Love You” for the album highlights. For this album Larry has inlisted an all star cast including; Roxy Cottontail, Perez Hilton, Princess Superstar, and many more.

Suckers
"Suckers"

****
We thought you just might like to hear the new Suckers EP as I know we have been excitedly awaiting for it. These songs were produced by the one of their buddies in Yeasayer, Anand Wilder. Unfortunately its only four songs and sounds a bit more mainstream compared to their previous demo recordings. But to everyone’s excitement, they are pretty damn good. All of the songs are extremely catchy while still maintaining a bit of atmospheric artiness to them. Song #2 “Afterthoughts & TV “ sounds a lot like Band Of Horses to, while song #3 "Easy Chairs" is by far the best song on the EP. Just check out the chorus on it. And song #4 "It Get's Your Body Moving" is a mind blowing anthem. People will be singing this song all across the Atlantic. We've seen these boys play live like ten times with friends, Chairlift, but have never heard the songs in this form so well documented. It’s a thrill to hear Quinn Walker, Austin Fisher, Pan and Brian Aiken making such great recordings.

Lily Allen
"It's Not Me It's You"

****
Lily Allen truly is pop star. But unlike many other pop stars she actually writes her own lyrics. And that is a good thing as her clear lyrics make for a good time. Anytime that you want something silly, fun, and dancey to listen to you can pop on "The Fear" or "Back To Start" and you'll instantly be in a good mood. So this pop star still has a lot to say and her new album reflects just that.

These Are Powers
"All Aboard Future"

*****
This far-out collective has created a more advanced album then we could have ever imagined. Their left field thinking has helped them make one of the coolest albums to ever come out of Brooklyn. They’ve put together an album that brings to mind comparisons to Brooklyn’s other greats, Liars, Gang Gang Dance, and Animal Collective. They have managed to make such high experimental and original songs while still maintaining a strong pop edge to music. This is an album that you’ll be listening to on repeat for years to come.

Dead Oceans

Beirut
"March of The Zapotec and Realpeople Holland"

****
Beirut’s new album is a beautifully landscaped piece. On this new album you can hear his traditional use of instruments from all around Europe to make a worldly sound. The difference this time is that Beirut adds an indie dance edge to his music making it a bit more excessible and poppy. The album reminds me of something you would expect from Magnetic Fields. Light, airy, and poppy topped with a ton of quirky lyrics. In other words, perfect for any indie kid.

Ba Da Bing

The Hunches
"Exit Dreams"

***
Portland, Oregon’s finest skuzzy, fuzzed, garage rockers are back with another album full of music that you’d expect to hear out of them. It’s dirty, raw, swampy garage rock that sounds like it was recorded in a basement somewhere with blown out speakers and amps.

These two Djs have gotten together some of the biggest names in hip hop, rock, and indie for our generation. Karen O, Spank Rock, Chuck D, David Byrne, RZA, Amanda Blank, Sizzla, and tons more have come together to put together one of funnest albums of 2009. Check "Whatchadoin'" for the highlight song of the whole project.

Limbs
"Seeds On Stone"

***
Limbs is a group of Brooklyn youngsters obsessed with 1990's indie rock. Think Sebadoh and Superchunk and you are right on track. For the highlight of the album check out the song "Whitewash" for its energetic guitar and thumping rhythms.

Winter Gloves
"About A Girl"

***
Canada loves their indie bands. Especially those that sing melodic pop songs with a dancy edge. Winter Gloves make exactly what their public wants with their indie bible in their hand. This album sounds as if it could of been created by any member of Death Cab For Cutie.

Paperbag Records

Duels
"The Barbarians Move In"

***
Duels have made a very dark and rough record that sounds like a mix between Radiohead “The Bends” area mixed with a dark and sinister edge of The Divine Comedy. The only problem is that it lacks a lot of originality. In fact if it wasn’t for “Regeneration” the album would feel like a failure, but this song saves it from falling flat.

Because this band was on an Ipod commerical you want to hate it like many other bands that get a lucky break, but upon listening to the full album you find yourself really loving their cheesy pop songs. They sound like they are as happy as a daisy singing these songs. Check out the songs "The Sun Ain't Shining No More", Push The Envelope", and "Around The Bend" for their top tunes.

Small Giants

Mi Ami
"Watersports"

****
We got the chance to see this band at Cake Shop the other week and were totally blown away with how great they were. They instantly reminded me of the Liars during the period of their first record. Raw, full of rhythm, and tons tons tons of energy. It was totally exciting to see and hear a band doing this sound still. And doing it so well that you can't help but dance around in excitement. This debut album reflects all of their live energy and excitement so well that you will forget that you never got the chance to see this San Fran band live before.

Touch & Go

The Juan Maclean
"The Future Will Come"

****
By now many of you know who Juan Maclean is. He is one dance orchestra that has a strong love for instrumentation and rhythm. This is his sophomore album accompanied by his bandmate, Nancy W., where they take us on a night out in Ibiza. Juan Maclean wants to make you dance your worries away and he succeeds in doing so with great songs like "The Simple Life", "No Time" and "Happy House". This is the record that you need to listen to right before going out on a Friday night.

DFA

Sky Larkin
"The Golden Spike"

***
This three-piece from the UK love their youth and you can hear their enthusiasm loud and clear in their songs. With a strong punk pop flavor similar to bands like Sleater Kinney and The Thermals, Sky Larkin are making youthful art-pop that is simply fun to bounce around to. They might not be breaking the mold, but their songs are so much fun that you'll always enjoy a listen.

Wichita

The View
"Witch Bitch"

***
The sophomore album by this Scottish group is not as catchy and spell binding as their debut album. There is no "Same Jeans" song on here to jump around to, but the band still has managed to write some fun songs. They just take a bit longer to warm up to compared to their previous work. Check out "One Off Pretender" for its rocking beat and sing-along chorus.

1965 Records

Spider and the Flies
"Something Clockwork This Way Comes"

****
This album is a side project from two of the members of The Horrors. Its simply an instrumental mindtrip. The duo set us back to a 1965 recording studio where they spend long evenings jamming out on Moog synths and various other keyboards and samplers creating a groove and spooky mood. Some of the songs even have a dance edge to them for those of you that enjoy the obscure number.

Mute Irregulars

Morrissey
"Years of Refusal"

****
You might think that after all of these years Moz might run out of things to say, but as each year rolls by, he continues to surprise us with his clear wit. This new album takes a massive leap forward in his career, where most people would start to make mellow records, Moz takes it up a notch by turning it up a tempo from the last album. Listening to "That's How People Grow Up" instantly reminds me of songs from "Your Arsenal". Each song is highly satarical with a loud boost to romp around to. So judging by this album, there is no slowing down for Moz and thank goodness as he still has a ton important things to say to us all.

Attack Feb, 2009

Asobi Seksu
"Hush"

*****
Asobi Seksu has always been a favorite of ours since 2000, when they used to be called Sportfuck, so it is great to see that they are still doing so well. This is the third full length and one that has us with our jaws down to the ground in excitement. This album is even more lush, poppy, and beautiful than anything that they have ever done. The band even signs some songs in English making it a real treat for us to finally be able to understand their sweet vocals. On this album we get a taste of what it must have been like to hear the Cocteau Twins during their day. Check out the songs “Gliss” and “Sunshower” first as they seem to sparkle out more than the others.

Polyvinyl Records

Faunts
"Feel.Love.Thinking.Of"

****
You gotta love a label that finds something as special as this band. Friendly Fire truly has worked hard to find this real treat. This Canadian band makes music that takes on many forms. You can hear traces of electronic, pop, indie, shoegaze, and twee all wrapped in one song. Think Death Cab For Cutie. “Check out these two songs first as they even contain a bit of dancability to them that reminds me of Junior Boys; “Out On A Limb” and “IT Hurts All The Time”. Keep an ear out for Faunts as they will slowly creep up on you when you least expect it.

Friendly Fire

Fight Like Apes
"And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion"

***
This UK debut album is one that truly breathes a youthful spirit. Its catchy pop/punk captures what is we all loved about being young. Having a good time and knowing it makes it ok to pull out a couple silly jams along the way. But when they are this much fun, you simply don’t care.

Citizen Records

Razorlight
"Slipway Fires"

**
We all loved Johnny and his last album when he gave us that great song about America. But now he has gone too far and created an over indulgent album full of boring and slow songs. Johnny truly has spent way too much time and effort soul searching when all we want to do is see him rock out on stage. So note to band, for the next record, try just rocking out again.

Mercury Records

The Prodigy
"Invaders Must Die"

***
Everyone kid in the world has had at least one prodigy album in their music collection. I mean everyone knows their hit song, “Firestarter”. You have had to, because the band has more gold records than almost any other electronic dance band out there. So it is no surprise that the band is continuing on with putting out heavy electronic dance records in the same vain of “Firestarter”. “Invaders Must Die” seems to take that spirit and speed up the BPMs even more. The band refuses to take a breather when it comes to getting you up on the dance floor throughout the whole record. So expect crowds all over to continuing to mosh to The Prodigy.

Take Me To The Hospital

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
"The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart"

*****
This album is a real treat for fans of old Sarah Records. Their twee pop sound fits perfectly along any records by The Pastels, Heavenly, or The Field Mice. Kip and Peggy’s sweet vocals give off such a warm feeling that you instantly feel all fuzzy and giddy inside. Adorned with an 80's indie stylized artwork this release truly will enlighten your record collection and help win over any of your cardigan wearing friends. Over the past year, we’ve watched them play multiple shows, some with Chairlift, and it is truly amazing to see how far they have progressed as songwriters and musicians in such a short amount of time. The four of them have written an album full of song that are 100% timeless.

Slumberland

White Lies
"To Lose My Life"

****
Fans of Interpol and Editors will totally love this band. They were the right black slim suites, sing highly epic and catchy songs and parade like a dark indie band. You want to hate them for copying what is already there, but the songs are so catchy and good that you can’t help but like it. Check out “Price Of Love” fist as this single is truly epic.

Fiction

Cut Off Your Hands
"I"

****
It is about time that these boys are giving us a full length. We’ve only been waiting for about 2 years now. But it is well worth the wait as we feel in love with this band on first live sighting. These New Zealand boys truly know how to make us happy with their inticiging songs of love, life, and good times. And this album is now disappointment. Each song is an instant hit. But you need to see this band live as they truly are an amazing live band. But for those of you that can’t venture to shows, you’ll find yourself happily content with this album to keep you company.

Frenchkiss Records

Mirror Mirror
"The Society For The Advancement Of Infammatory Con"

*****
This band has been playing around Brooklyn for a few years now and has finally released their debut album. And what a treat this is. Check out the single “New Horizon”. If you don’t like this, then you must not have any musical taste. This mystic, psych rock band takes you back to old days of Pink Floyd while also sounding a bit renaissance sounding. On another note the drummer also drums in the band Telepathe.

Cochon Records

Franz Ferdinand
"Tonight"

****
This band needs no introduction as everyone knows about their delicious indie dance pop. When they came out with their debut album you could hear it at every bar and club across the world. So now it times for another new album full of hits that you will soon be hearing out everywhere. Check out these songs first; “Ulysses”, “Lucid Dreams”, and “What She Came For” as you’ll soon be hearing them everywhere.

Domino

Psychic Ills
"Mirror Eyes"

***
Psychic Ills started out making cool music that sounded like early Spacemen 3, but as the years have progressed, so has the band’s music. Each release we find the band taking on new directions and getting weirder and more experimental and atmospheric. On this release the band takes on a total freak-out acid trip by giving us mostly all instrumental psych jams that are definitely far out there yet still super exciting to listen to.

The Social Registry

Animal Collective
"Merriweather Post Pavilion"

*****
This is by far the best Animal Collective album that they have written so far. Each song is a great psychedelic pop masterpiece. If you don’t know this band yet than this is a great album to become introduced to the band with. You can easily spend hours listening to this album.

Domino

Loney Dear
"Dear John"

***
This is the third album by these Swedish folk guys that love to write great pop songs. Emil Svanangen is the lead frontman and mastermind behind this outfit. He recorded this album solely in his studio apartment in Stockholm, yet these recordings sound as if they could have been recorded in a big studio with a huge name producer.

Polyvinyl Records

Trost
"Trust Me"

****
This debut solo album is a nice treat from this German electro star. With half of the songs sung in English and some in German Trost gives up a cold and dark electro folk flavor that also hints on a garage like feel. Check out the song “Man On The Box” first as this song will stick in your head all day long.

Bronzerat Records

Antony & The Johnsons
"The Crying Light"

**
You either totally love Antony or hate him. There really is no in between with this guy. He has the most challenging vocal style that you will here out there today. Unfortunately we fall closer to the hate side as his vocal style is a bit too whiney and irritating for us. But we do like the way he brings an opera-esq element to his slow and carnival like act. For a truly amazing vocal take from Antony check out “Blind” where he guest sings with Hercules and Love Affair, bringing in his love for 70’s disco.

Secretly Canadian

Pale Young Gentlemen
"Black Forest"

***
Pale Young Gentlemen are a Wisconsin based band that have pulled out an amazing lo-fi folk album with some of the strangest vocals that you have heard in the folk-pop world. Maybe the cold hard winter is actually good for the human spirit. Being trapped indoors might for days on end has truly inspired these boys to write some creative songs that will in return inspire you.

Science Of Sound

The Naked Hearts
"These Knees"

***
The Naked Hearts is a duo in love. In love with life, music, and with each other. And their music spills out their love for everything. You can hear it in the song “Only For You” with its cool and haunting vocals. With the band being only a year old they have already started capturing people’s hearts with these simple, yet elegant 4 track recordings. Also check out Amy Cooper’s solo albums for some sweet vocals.

Self-Released

Los Campensinos!
"We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed"

***
These youngsters are a good toast to the indie world with their youthful indie pop that is light and bouncy. The songs are fun, catchy and a joy to engross your record recollection with.

Arts & Crafts

Alela Diane
"To Be Still"

****
Alela Diane writes and sings beautiful country inspired folk that will make any grown man cry. She is truly a modern country music star. Fans of girl vocalists all the way from Patsy Cline to Cat Power will enjoy her songs.

Rough Trade

I’m From Barcelona
"Who Killed Harry Houdini"

***
This sophomore album from this massive collective is cool indie pop treat. But it doesn’t do the band justice compared to how good their live show is. You have to see this band live to understand their true magic.

Virgin

Wild Light
"Adult Nights"

**
America loves good ole’ rock n’ roll bands. But it would be nice if they could also be a bit more interesting, so that they add something new to the flavor. Wild Light are good, but they tend to be a bit bland and boring as they sound like they could be any American rock n’ roll band playing out from 1960 to now.

Startime Intl.

Headlights
"Remixes"

***
We have nothing but love for this band. They write some of the sweetest indie pop gems that take you back to 1990. Just check out the song “Cherry Tulips” and you’ll instantly know what we are talking about. This is a collection of 13 songs that some of their friends have gotten together to provide some fun remixes to giving us a new and interesting angle on the band. Check out tracks 1 and 4 as their remixes by TJ Lipple and Carl Parks are the best.

Polyvinyl Records

A Shoreline Dream
"Recollections Of Memory"

***
This California shoegaze band makes dreamy, slow, but load guitar rock that resembles what you would want out of a shoegaze band. Yet their California homeland is a huge influence as they have a warm glow to their music. Fans of M83 will enjoy this band.

Latenight Weeknight Records

Longwave
"Secrets Are Sinister"

***
Longwave are one of the original NYC bands from the early 2000 scene. Since then they have survived poor sales at RCA Records and come back with terrific record full of shoegaze pop that brings an early 90’s sound that fans of Slowdive would love. Check out the song “Life Is Wrong” for a standout track.

Original Signal Recordings

Kanye West
"808’s and Heartbreak"

***
Kanye’s new album is another great treat for music lovers all around. Check out the songs “Heartless” and “Love Lockdown” as these songs hit on the hardest. Best part is that Kanye brings on some cool stars to help the album shine. Check out Kid Cudi as this guy is a rising star in the making. He has written a song called “Day and Night” that is pure party brilliance.

Rockafella Records

All The Saints
"Fire On Corridor X"

***
This Atlanta crew make cool sludge, prog, rock that verges on taking some on some metal instints. You can hear their dirty south influences all the way up here. This record makes me miss El Myr, which is the best thing about the South.

Touch & Go

The Fireman
"Electric Arguments"

***
Paul McCartney’s new solo album is truly a nice treat and surprise to hear. Produced by his friend, Youth, Paul brings a refreshingly youthful approach to his songs. Check out the songs “Sing The Changes”, “Universal Here, Everlasting Now”, and “Lovers In A Dream” for some truly great treats.

ATO

Here We Go Magic
"Tunnelvision"

****
This 9-song mini album is a majestic masterpiece from this Brooklyn artist collective. Taking roots from Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, Luke Temple created a psychedelic pop album full of delights. At the head of it all is the self titled song “Tunnelvision” which leads us down a mystic trip of musical wonderment. Yes this is music that you must take some time to enjoy, but also one that you can easily get, as it is easily accessible to any musical ear. Those that still like to venture into new creative outlets will enjoy Luke Temple’s music.

Western Vinyl

Matt and Kim
"Grand"

***
This is the second album from Brooklyn’s favorite DIY duo. Matt and Kim have a massive following due to their intensively fun and high energy show. Their debut album sparked a huge following among indie kids all over the U.S. as each song contained enough energy and DIY spirit to fill a stadium. Now for this second album they have taken a somewhat newer approach by expanding the songwriting to include more ballads. Check out the songs “Cutdown” and “Don’t Slow Down” as these are the most high energy numbers that will get you excited.

Fader

Miss Ludella Black
"From This Witness Stand"

****
This is a 60’s style garage-pop done professionally well. And as Ludella Black was originally in The Del-Monas and Headcoatee, along with her friends Holly Golightly, Kyra Rubella and ‘Bongo’ Debbie, it is easy to hear why. So what is you get here is an album by a cult hero that still has got the juice to pump out great music.

Damaged Goods

Hatcham Social
"Postcard In Colours"

****
Hatcham Social is a group of youngsters from London that make dancey twee-pop that favors an early 90’s sound. Anyone remember Edywn Collin’s old band, Orange Juice? If so than you’ll get a strong idea of what this band sounds like. You can often spot them hanging out in the Shoreditch music scene with many other young and hip bands. This six song debut EP was produced by Tim Burgess(The Charlatans) and Faris Badwin(The Horrors) as they are both big fans. Check out the song “So So Happy Making”.

TBD Records

Country Teasers
"Ezez Tiger"

****
Country Teasers is a legendary punk band with a true DIY spirit of making music. These garage punks make music that is weirder than seeing your mom naked. Filled with a psychedelic edge you’ll be excited to her their new album as each album is well worth collecting.

Holy Mountain

Submarine Races
"Submarine Races"

**
Unfortunately I have to admit that this album is somewhat of a bit of disappointment. This Chicago band is a bit too straight up pop/punk that it is not that intriguing or original sounding. Taking cues from an early 90’s indie sound they should sound prevalent with many revivalist bands, yet their sounds lack a bit of creativity to really stand out.

In The Red

Skeletons
"Money"

***
These Brooklynites love to write experimental music. Many people know this collective as some of them run the loft party space called Silent Barn. On this album they give us experimental dootles that remind us of an early Animal Collective record with the songs taking multiple electronic directions all over the place.

Tomlab

Mystery Girls
"Incontinopia"

****
In The Red Records has a rep for putting out some of the coolest garage bands from all over. Mystery Girls live up to that legend as this album is a full force garage punk album that doesn’t disappoint.

In The Red

Plushgun
"Pins & Panzers"

****
One would never expect in this day that Tommy Boy would find such a great sound from an indie band, but they truly have. Plusgun is really the genius of just one guy and his electronic beats that give off a postal Service vibe. Check out “Just Impolite” as that is the song that you are mostly to hear at at clubs around town. Then for a bit of comedy check out the song “Union Pool” that pokes fun of one of the hipster bars in Williamsburg, Flight Of The Conchords style.

Tommy Boy

Desolation Wilderness
"White Light Strobing"

***
This delicate record will appeal to fans of Low as it makes you feel like you are relaxing on a calm fall September morning on a porch swing watching the leaves fall. Each song is so tender and beautiful that it puts you in a perfect state of bliss.

K Recs

Lovvers
"Think"

****
This UK punk band has made one of the coolest debut albums to come out since The Wipers and The Germs. Fans of old SST Records, Jay Reatard, and Tyvek will love this lo-fi recorded energy filled punk album. Listen to “Human Hair” first as its simply brilliant.

Wichita

Marnie Stern
"This Is It And I Am It And You Are It And So I Tha"

****
Marnie Stern is one of the coolest experimental, noise, pop artists to come out of Brooklyn in a long time. This is her second album on Kill Rock Stars and one that is well worth all of the attention that she has been getting. In the beginning you could often catch her playing loft/warehouse DIY parties all across Brooklyn, but now that she has advanced onto playing actual real venues her music has progressed even more. And you can her the advancement in her work with the key post punk inspired fast and punky number “Transformer”.

Kill Rock Stars

Nite Jewel
"Good Evening"

*****
The past two years italio disco has made a big comeback within the indie kids. The Italians Do It Better label has been championing many of the best bands from this genre. Nite Jewel, from the LA area, is definitely one of them. Fans of Glass Candy can instantly align themselves with this chilled out, gorgeous disco sound. Nite Jewel’s hit song “Artificial Intelligence” sounds like Saint Ettiene on vallum.

Self Released

Children’s Hospital
"Alone Together"

***
If this patient is truly from Lebanon, then there must be some great hidden talk coming out of there. This highly experimental album is filled with electronic feedback that gives off a somewhat spooky vibe. Topped with lofi vocals the music sounds as if it is calling out to space.

Sacred Bones

Ty Segall
"Ty Segall"

***
The garage rock sound has made a massive splash this year. This band from the San Francisco bay area has made an album that hits home perfectly with this year’s hip lo-fi garage rock sound. Fans of The Coachwhips sound take note as Ty Segall has got the goods to fill that missing void in your life. Check out the song “Oh Mary”.

Castel Face

Teenage Panzerkorps
"Games For Slaves"

****
Who does Silt Breeze keep finding these great bands? The label is on a roll lately with one great release after another. This Berlin, Germany band are another great band to follow in footsteps of the current trend of lo-fi recordings. This album takes a strong cue from The Fall while adding a fuzzed out garage rock sound to the mix. The rest is simply just another great record that you’ll enjoy listening to.

Silt Breeze

The Rebel
"Northern Rocks Bear Weird Vegetable"

***
Sacred Bones is a local Brooklyn label that specializes in putting out cool underground music. Fans of The Headcoats, The Fall, Billy Childish, and Lo-fi recordings will love this new release by The Rebel. One of the coolest things about this label is attention to detail on their special vinyl series. Each release is well worth collecting for its great music and artwork.

Sacred Bones

The Secret History
"Desolation Town"

**
The Secret History is a project formed by Michael Grace Jr., who was previously in the band My Favorite, and Lisa Ronson, daughter of Mick Ronson, who was Bowie’s guitarist. With that combination you would think that this would be one of the most amazing albums to date. Unfortunately their songs lack the quality that you would expect from sweet indie twee-pop. Lisa’s voice just fails to shine out to make the songs worth signing along to.

Le Grand Majestrey

Underground Railroad
"Sticks And Stones"

*****
For those that miss the sounds of the Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, and Silversun Pickups you are totally gonna love this band. They bring the essence of early 90’s guitar rock to the forefront while still making music that sounds fresh and new. The two main singles “Sticks And Stones” and “Kill Me Now” will instantly hit with you excitement. Each one has a rough and rare sound that is also very powerful and catchy.

One Little Indian

Bloc Party
"Intimacy"

****
Bloc Party are back and this time with a huge bang. Forget thieir sophomore album, this album takes the band back to their roots with great indie dance hits like “Mercury” and “Talons”. On these songs the band is aiming for the dance floor by adding some more electronic elements to their soppy lyrics to give the songs that extra added punch. But for those of you that like their more mellow side of music, they give us a good mix of softer, mellow tempo songs as well. All in all it is good to hear that Bloc Party are back and have still got the goods.

Atlantic

Wavves
"Wavves"

****
Lo-fi has become the new punk. Wavves is the brainchild of one San Diego brainchild that loves punk and skateboarding. Like many bands from The Smell scene he creates music that has lo-fi recordings with a strong punk ethic. Each song is highly original and fun, with a skuzzy, fuzzy guitar sound that harks back to a love of early 90’s guitar bands like Dinosaur Jr. The best part is that he records all of his music in his own home studio. Also collect his 7”s as they collect the best songs to date. Now go check out his love for cool 80’s skate memorabilia.

Woodsist

The Killers
"Day & Age"

****
The new Killers album is a welcome surprise. Everyone wants to hate this band because they are so popular, but they write such great pop songs that you can’t help but love them. And with great singles like “Spaceman” and “Human” you can’t resist their catchiness. You’ll soon be dancing to these songs and forgetting that you want to hate this band cause they are popular. You’ll simply be happily singing along while swooning the girl next to you on the dance floor.

Island

Blank Dogs
"The Fields"

****
Blank Dogs put our a new record almost every couple months. But each time they are a treat to collect. This 7 song vinyl release is another lo-fi folk goodness from this solo artist. His songs draw strong comparisons to Ariel Pink in that he records in a mysterious and enchanting manner, thus making his songs full of pyschedelic wonder.

Woodsist

A.H. Kraken
"A.H. Kraken"

***
This German punk band makes skuzzy, fuzzed out punk rock that fits perfectly with In The Red’s rooster. Most of the songs are challenging affairs where you can’t understand what they are saying, incredibly noisy, jacked up to 100 miles per hour, yet sonically exciting. A. H. Kraken is taking punk in a new direction by making music challenging and exhilarating.

In The Red

The Streets
"Everything Is Borrowed"

***
This is the final album from Mike Skinner. Yes that is true, Mike Skinner has decided to call it quits for his band, The Streets, and start working on other projects (films). But before he leaves he has given us one last album full of British rhymes to remember him by. Unfortunately this album doesn’t do him justice compared to his earlier work as it doesn’t contain a big hit single, but at least it gives us a golden memory of the genius of his lyrics and song.

Vice

School Of Seven Bells
"Alpinisms"

*****
Does the world really need another shoegaze influenced band? Well he answer is yes. Especially when it sounds this good. After Benjamin Curtis left his best friends in Secret Machines and On!Air!Library disbanded sisters, Alejandra and Claudia Dehez, joined Ben to make this glorious album. Each song sounds like a beautiful lullaby that fans of The Cocteau Twins or Slowdive will love. This is truly one beautiful album.

Full Time Hobby

Hank IV
"Refuge In Genre"

****
Hank IV are dirty, scuzzy, punk rock from San Francisco that just sounds terrific on vinyl. Like many other of the Silt Breeze releases these recordings are a bit lo-fi, yet the band has so much energy that they give off an early Dischord sound. This is by far one of the most fun records that I have listened to all month.

Siltbreeze

Japanther
"Tut Tut Now Shake Ya Butt"

***
Following in the tradition of The Fall, Brooklyn's own legendary lo-fi punks continue to give us numerous amounts of releases. With each new album you can expect the unexpected from Japanther, except you always can be safe in the fact of knowing that each album is recorded in the same lo-fi manner. With using an experimental approach to the original punk sound the band has gained a solid following across the U.S. DIY music scene. Check out the song "Bump'n Rap Tapes" for a real energized punk number.

Wantage

Lake
"Oh, The Places We'll Go"

****
Lake is the type of band that should be on K Records. Their twee-pop indie sound fits perfectly with K's catalog. Sweet female vocals bring back the sound that labels like Heavenly, Sarah, Slumberland, and Kindercore Records produced so well. Each song is light and airy indie pop delight. Thank you K for continuing this great indie sound.

K Records

Au
"Verbs"

****
Au make some super fun, tripped out, psychedelic music that fans of Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, and Liquid Liquid should check out. Each song takes on its own personality by varying on the mellow to more upbeat dance vibe. This is the type of album that would be great to listen to while driving through a hilly countryside of relaxing on your bed to.

Aagoo

Yo Majesty
"Futuristically Speaking Never Be Afraid"

**
When we first heard about Yo Majesty we got super excited. The idea of a great band coming out of Florida gave us all hope. Being as many of us used to live in Florida we know how hard it is to break out of there. But upon hearing their songs, we were instantly disappointed. These female, Christian, lesbian rappers lack the beats and rhymes to get us excited and with hip hop you need the beats in order to make songs exciting. Maybe the next album will be better.

Domino

Chad Vangaalen
"Soft Airplane"

****
Chad Vangaalen's debut album didn't impress us, but this sophomore debut has simply made us fall in love with Chad. On this new album he takes on a weirder and more tripped out approach to songwriting. The album gives off a more psychedelic feel to his folky songs making them all more of an interesting listen. This is a massive creative improvement for Chad and we honor it. Fans of Grizzly Bear will enjoy this album. The best part about Chad is that we learned he is a fellow skateboarder.

Sub Pop

Wild Beasts
"Limbo Panto"

***
Wild Beasts is the type of band that is loved by music critics and misunderstood by normal people as they tend to make highly creative and challenging music. They sing in high falsettos like a children's church choir or Italian opera house. Fans of Antony and The Johnsons will get and love this band. Others might find it a bit to strange sounding, but if you take the time to truly give it a listen to hear it's real genius.

Domino

Adele
"19"

***
Adele has the voice of an angle and you can hear it on the hit single "Chasing Pavements". This female singer/songwriter knows how to write a tune that everyone can love. She is already listed on as one of the top sellers on iTunes and with her ability to write such crossover tunes it is easy to hear why.

XL Recordings

Hockey
"Mind Chaos"

***
This is the debut self-released album from one of CMJ's most hyped about bands of 2008. This Portland, Oregon group have given us nine songs that take on a variety of range. It seems that The Strokes, The Killers, and Gang Of Four have all had a positive influence on these youngsters. The best song resides first with "Too Fake" as it gives us a good indie dance floor feel that any dj could play out well. With a debut album this hyped up, be on the lookout for more from these West Coast guys.

Self Released

NODZZZ
"NODZZZ"

****
These California slacker punks give us their debut full length after the terrific release of "I Don’t Wanna (Smoke Marijuana)" 7" This single excited me so much that I couldn't wait for their full length. I haven't heard anything as exciting within this slacker/punk influenced vibe since Pavement ruled the indie charts. But now NODZZZ have come to try and reclaim that thrown. This album is cool, but doesn't have a solid hit as their debut 7" had. Each song is slow and tripped and give a feeling like I'm listening to old Dead Milkmen records.

Little Joy
"Little Joy"

***
It has been a long time since The Strokes gave us another album. But while they are on hiatus, some of the band members have been working on other projects. Little Joy is a band that Fabrizio Moretti made with many other friends while living in sunny Los Angeles. You can hear the warm temperature's influence in each song with its happy go lucky beach boys inspired sound topped with an added touch of reggae. Can anyone say UB40? The album is not as great as we would expect from a member of The Strokes, but one that can still find a warm place in your heart.

Selfish Cunt
"English Chamber Music"

****
A couple years ago Selfish Cunt came onto the scene when Martin Tomlinson took it upon himself to make an art influenced one man electro/punk band. He had tons to say, but just didn't have the rhythm and music intensity to make his debut album rememberable. But now that he has a full band behind him, his sophomore album is a real triumph. Each song sounds like a punked version of The Fall. This is an album that you'll want to listen to over and over again as each song is filled with so much excited that they demand your attention.

Love Is All
"A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night"

***
When Love Is All first came out with their debut album, hipsters from all over were super excited about this Swedish band. Their scratchy and arty indie dance songs were a relief of fresh air to hear. Each song sounded like an instant hit and it felt almost impossible to pick out only one song from the album as the hit single. But with that debut album the band had 5 years to perfect their songs on it. After a couple world tours and having some children, the band has finally given us their sophomore album. This is one that is still really good, but unfortunately doesn't pack as much of a punch as their debut album as it doesn't contain the same sense of urgency and excitement in the songs. All in all it is still a great indie album, but really only an indie album.

Whats Your Rupture

Crystal Stilts
"Alight Of Night"

*****
This Brooklyn band makes me proud to say that I live in this neighborhood. People are once again saying that NYC is on top with the best bands in the world. And well they are right. You can go out almost any night of the week and see a rad band. But if you are really lucky you will catch a live set by Crystal Stilts at Cake Shop. The place sets the best vibe for this 80’s influenced band. It makes you feel like you good be at a Echo and The Bunnymen, Velvet Underground, or Psychedelic Furs concert with Molly Ringwald at the bar. Their droney lyrics and fuzzed out guitars set the perfect backdrop for that era. And the best part is that their songs are so good that you’ll wanna own the vinyl for your record collection. This sophomore release contains even more slower and darker songs then their debut, but it is good to hear the band playing a somewhat still familiar sound.

Those Dancing Days
"In Our Space Hero Suits"

****
Who would of guessed that a group of Swedish teenagers would come up with such brilliant indie pop songs to get us old music enthusiasts so excited. Well it has happened cause the minute their debut single “Those Dancing Days” dropped we wet our pants with excitement. This is the perfect single to get you dancing, while singing along all week long. Other great songs include “Run Run” and “Home Sweet Home”. There must be something in the water in Sweden as the Swedes continue to put out great music.

Wichita

Ladyhawke
"Ladyhawke"

*****
Ladyhawke is the genius of a young Australian girl that’s real name is Pip. She has crafted a debut album that is so much fun that any fan of pop music will enjoy. Her love of the 80’s shines throughout this album. If Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, and Madonna would make more updated music they would sound a bit like this. The already hit singles; “Back Of The Van”, “Paris Is Burning”, and “Dusk To Dawn” have been playing in clubs for almost a year now and kids are loving it. So it is no surprise that this album is a hit. And it doesn’t hurt that her artwork and image are great as well.

Black Time
"Double Negative"

***
Yes we buy and check out pretty much everything that In The Red puts out, because unlike many record labels, they put out pure quality releases. And Black Time is no exception. This fuzzed out guitar rock is pure genius music for the mentally insane. Their music is highly unrecognizable for the average person, but for those of you that like truly are in the know, you have been waiting impatiently for this new album. The only thing that I could say to compare this album to would be the Coachwhips last album.

In The Red

Princeton
"Bloomsbury EP"

****
We first heard about this band from one of our beloved bands, Ra Ra Riot. The band is currently on tour with them and killing it. Following in the footsteps of indie greats, Belle and Sebastian, Princeton make happy twee-pop with a full orchestra sound that contains a strong lyrical sense. Check out the song “Eminent Victorians” for it’s catchy chorus and ironic scholarly content. You’ll be singing along to this sound all day long after you listen to it.

Self Released

Lili Z.
"The Two Of Us"

****
When listening to this album you never would be able to guess that Lili Zeller self recorded this entire album in her Paris home on an 8 track. Lili Z sounds like a “punkier version of Jennifer Gentle(TM Steph).” She takes on the form of an electro guitar psychobilly punk rocker with ghostly sounds. If you like The Cramps then you’ll enjoy what Lili has created on this new album.

In The Red

Roses Kings Castles
"Roses Kings Castles"

***
Pete Doughtry’s drummer has gone solo and produced his own album under the name, Roses Kings Castles. Like his boss, this guy has a large poetic side to him. Each song on this album reads like a poetry book played out in a pure twee pop form. The lyrics resemble a sunnier/happier side than his previous band made. On this album the drummer takes on more of a Belle and Sebastian style form than a garage rocker.

The Sycamore Club

Eagles Of Death Metal
"Heart On"

***
This is the third album for Joshua Homme and Jesse Hughes. This duo make popular rock tunes for redneck hipsters. This isn’t the kind of music that you will hear coming outta a bar in Williamsburg, but it is the perfect music to blast while racing down your dirt road in your corvette. Check out these storming rock songs first “I’m Your Torpedo”, “Cheap Thrills”, and “Wannabe in LA”. They’ll get your goose rocking enough to speed up your chevy truck to 100 miles per hour.

Downtown Recordings

Deerhunter
"Microcastle"

*****
Yes by now all of you know who Deerhunter is. They are this wacky experimental noise pop group from Atlanta. But what many of you don’t know is that you need to get this album. It is by far one of the best albums of this year. With each new release the band takes on a new direction of musical discovery. Like other experimental bands Liars, Gang Gang Dance, and Animal Collecitve the band started out making such highly experimental music that normal people felt alienated, but on this new album the band takes a more accessible approach that finds them winning over new fans all over the world while still crafting new and exciting sounds.

Kranky

Monsters Are Waiting
"Ones and Zeros"

*****
These Los Angeles based indie poppers have made a stunning return to the throne with 6 new songs. They won us other with their debut album so much that we chased them around the country in order to get them to give us some more good tracks. The result is this fine collection of new songs. The lead song “Ones and Zeros” is a true hit in the waiting. Think a poppier version of Blonde Redhead and you are very close to what the band sounds like. Lead by haunting and beautiful female vocals the band takes us back to the mid 1990’s era of great indie pop songs that you can actually sing along to. Check out the Kanine Records website to see their new video now.

Kanine Records

Kaiser Chiefs
"Off With Their Heads"

***
This Blur influenced Britpop band knows how to make hit singles. They write the kind that are poppy enough to stick in your head all day long while still hyper enough to fill any indie dance floor. Like some of their previous singles like “I Predict A Riot”, this album contains another terrific single “Never Miss A Beat” that will keep their fans happy and newcomers interested. This album is by far not their best work, but still has enough juice to keep the band in the playing field.

B-Unique

Parenthetical Girls
"Entanglements"

****
When I first saw this band play at the Cake Shop I totally feel in love with their fay lyrics and tender playing style. They instantly reminded me of The Divine Comedy and early Pulp. This is definitely not music for everyone as the singers female vocal style can easily turn off a mucho guy, but for those of you that are super open minded and like weird and wacky indie music, then you should definitely dip into this band.

Tomlab

Vivian Girls
"Vivian Girls"

*****
Kickball Katy, Cassie Ramone, and Frankie Rose have been putting out lofi recorded 7” singles for only a short time around their Brooklyn hometown. Each release has sold out instantly and garnished a massive amount of attention. So much attention that In The Red re-released their debut album when it instantly sold out the first time on an even smaller indie label. With mixing elements of 60’s girl groups with 90’s shoegaze, and fuzzed out guitars/feedback the band has instantly become one of the most talked about groups in Brooklyn. And with such great songs like “Tell The World” and “Where Do You Run To” it is no question as to why.

In The Red

Mogwai
"The Hawk Is Howling"

***
Mogwai are well known as innovators in the instrumental guitar rock scene. Every since the mid 90’s they have been championed for their sound. The only problem now is that that sound hasn’t evolved much, so it starts to sound repetitive. But for those of you that like their bands to consistently sound the same, you’ll be extremely pleased with this new release.

Matador

Snow Patrol
"A Hundred Million Suns"

****
Snowpatrol, like Coldplay, is one of those bands that you are supposed to hate because its super uncool to admit you like their sappy songs, but the problem is that they are so well done that you can’t help but like them. Like Keane the band hit on your sensitive side with catchy songs “Take Back The City” and “Crack The Shutters”.

Fiction

The Cure
"4:13 Dream"

****
Everyone in the world knows who The Cure are. Even your parents will know who they are if you mention their name. But that doesn’t make them an uncool band that you wish you could ignore. Instead you continue to rejoice in how good their songs still are. Even though they have been around since the early 80’s they continue to write inspiring songs that need to be heard. Each of these songs sounds like a potential hit single.

Geffen Records

Cale Parks
"Sparklace"

****
Cale Parks is one of the coolest guys around. Not only does he make his own solo albums but he also plays in White Williams and Aloha. So when he is not busy with his other bands Cale spends time in the studio making cool psychedelic electronic music. Cale’s new album sounds like something that you would hear on Warp Records. Check out the song “A Long Time In The Mix”. For those of you that are fans of the new Tobacco album you’ll want to check out this album as well.

Polyvinyl Records

Free Blood
"The Singles"

****
Free Blood is a duo out of Brooklyn that has been making great jerky dance oriented singles for about five years now. All of them until now have only been released on various 12”s. As John quit !!! to concentrate on Free Blood full time he has crafted some super cool/hype disco flavored dance tunes with his partner Madeline Davy. One of the coolest parts is that Molly Schnick of Jean on Jean evens plays on the album. Check out the single “Quick and Painful” first as this is the jam. This singles collection contains six great songs and five fun remixes to dance around to in your underwear or at the club.

Rong Music

The Silent Years
"The Globe"

***
The Silent Years make solid indie songs that fans of Broken Social Scene would be proud to listen to. We’ve known this band for a good couple of years now and have seen how well their music continues to progress. They’ve even played some of our parties sometime.

Jay Reatard
"Matador Singles ‘08"

*****
Jay Reatard is one of the most exciting artists to rise out of the underground this year. This young punk has written, recorded, and produced more songs in his youthful career that it is almost impossible to keep up with him. But for those that haven’t has the chance yet, this singles collection is a great start. Check out the lead single “See Saw”. It’s instantly catchy chorus will get your head bopping all day long. Fans of Television, Modern Lovers, and The Buzzcocks need to check out this prolific genius.

Matador

Gang Gang Dance
"Saint Dymphna"

****
Gang Gang Dance has been making experimental noise rock in Brooklyn since early 2000. After numerous releases the band has finally made an album that combines a terrific sense of experimentation with a dancey rhythm and a bit of pop sense. Overall the band is still very much an experimental outfit, but this time they have managed to add a strong pop sense that makes each song more accessible and fun to listen to. You can hear a similar change in fellow Brooklynites, Animal Collective.

The Social Registry

Department Of Eagles
"In Ear Park"

****
While playing in Grizzly Bear, Daniel Rossen has been writing his own songs. With the help of a few friends, Fred Nicolaus, Nat Baldwin, Chris Taylor(Grizzly Bear), and Christopher Bear(Grizzly Bear) he has made one terrific album. Fans of Paul Simon, Beach Boys, and well Grizzly Bear will all enjoy this album of epic ballads.

Fucked Up
"The Chemistry Of Common Life"

***
Fucked Up is the hardcore, punk band that is ok for indie kids to like. Their music isn’t too hard, but also not too soft. And with an insane live show, it is no wonder that kids from all over the world are curious about what is going on with this band. With a lead singer that loves to incite chaos by cutting himself and encouraging stage invasions fans always leave with stories to tell for days on end. The only problem is that the live show is way more fun than the actual recordings. But for those that are looking for a night to remember, I encourage you to check out this band live.

Matador Records

Davila 666
"Davila 666"

***
It is not that often that you come across a cool garage/punk band from Puerto Rico, but these boys do the genre well by making a great racket and keeping the music original by singing in their own native language. The best part about this band is their sense of humor. Take a look at their myspace as they compare themselves to Menudo on lots of drugs.

In The Red

Women
"Women"

***
This Canadian band’s debut album has already garnished a ton of buzz. Recorded by CHAD VANGAALEN (Sub Pop) it gives off a very 70’s psychedelic and prog-like sound that is becoming ever so popular again. Fans of bands like Oneida can hear what makes them so special. Be on the lookout for them this year at CMJ as they’ll be playing 8 different shows.

Jagjaguwar

Holy Hail
"Independent Pleasure Club"

*****
Holy Hail is a group that clearly likes to have a ton of fun. And upon listening to this debut album, you will hear why. Cat's a rapper from the dirty south who's sister sings in a "praise and worship" band, Kevin's got a one in a million cat's eye and has never been on the Internet, Michally's a preacher's daughter and Matt's a Puerto Rican Jew. Together, with Michally's driving basslines, Matt's crisp backbeats and the rapid fire co-ed vocal duo of Cat and Kevin, Holy Hail draws on the honky tonk and the old school, Southern gothic and Westward expansion bringing in a new dance flavor to fill your ears with delight. They bring politically charged lyrics to the party, leading unsuspecting audiences to dance to the unlikely pairing of quirky dance-rock and observations on both the promise of America and its sprawling dark side. Holy Hail’s debut album reflects a wide range of influences: The Fall, New Order, X, Tom Tom Club, The Gossip, B52’s, and Fleetwood Mac. The band quickly has made a name for them by touring with The Rapture, The Presets, New Young Pony Club, Crystal Castles, and Bonde Do Role.

Anni Rossi
"Afton"

***
This female singer/songwriter takes folk music to a new level. By combining a scratchy and cool vocal style with traditional instruments Anni gives off an exciting new sound. Fans of Firey Furnaces, Reginna Spektor, and Joanna Newsom will enjoy her work. Check her out live at our CMJ party this year.

O’Death
"Broken Hymns, Limbs And Skin"

****
This is the sophomore album from this hillbilly inspired punk band. Taking elements from bluegrass, country, and folk these boys are talking traditional American musical elements and making them youthful and tons of fun. O’Death are the type of band that you go out to see for a damn good time.

Kemado

James
"Hey Ma"

****
It is hard to believe that these Manchester legends are still out there making records since their beginning in the late 80’s. It is even harder to believe that their records are still good. But “Hey Ma” has still got some great tunes. Just listen to “Whiteboy”, “Hey Ma”, and “Oh My Heart” and you’ll hear why people still care. Everyone remembers their hit song “Laid”, so hearing a new album from these guys brings bck some great memories. For fans of The Smiths will be excited to hear that familiar British pop sound again.

Decca

Johnny Foreigner
"Waited Up Til It Was Light"

****
We are super excited to have this band come play our CMJ party this year. Their hyper punk pop is so much fun that we wish the party was happening tomorrow. Check out their hit single “Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella” for its hyper and youthful sound. Fans of Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Go! Team, and CSS will rejoice by dancing and singing along to each of their songs.

Best Before

The Spinto Band
"Moonwink"

**
When The Spinto Band came out with the song “Oh Mandy” we all feel in love with their poppy choruses. It’s been over 2 years since then and we have been waiting on a new album ever since. The only problem is that this album lacks everything that makes the band so great. There is no hit single and without the band’s signature catchy choruses to sing along they leave us with nothing to look forward to. This album leaves us with a taste that The Spinto Band are just another average indie band to stack on your record shelf after one listen.

Park The Van

Japanese Motors
"Japanese Motors"

***
With the big buzz on the revival of garage rock, bigger indie labels are signing tons of bands before that have hardly gotten any recognition beforehand. Black Lips, King Khan, and Jay Reatard before were all DIY legends, but now have become household names to many kids. Now Vice is taking this LA band to higher reaches by giving them a proper release. This four-piece sound like they channeled the spirit of Johnathan Richman via the Modern Lovers era and mixed a sunny 50’s style doo-woop beat to the mix. Check out the lead single “Single Fins & Safety Pins” and you’ll be singing along to its catchy chorus all night long.

Vice

Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs
"Dirt Don’t Hurt"

****
For this new album Holly Golightly teams up with Lawyer Dave to from The Brokeoffs. Even with a new partner her voice and playing pretty much sounds like all of the rest of her albums. You can instantly hear her signiture voice and 60’s country folk influenced sound. For some real treats, check out her records where she teams up wth Billy Childish. But regardless of what you get from Holly, you know that each record is a treat worth listening to.

Damaged Goods

Tobacco
"Fucked Up Friends"

***
This is the solo project from one of the guys from Black Moth Super Rainbow. Filled with analog tape machines and synths Tobacco recorded these songs in the woods of Philadelphia. Each song is an electronic pychedelic tripout with such weirdness to it that you’ll want to make sure you listen to this with the lights on to ensure your sanity. The only drawback is that many of the songs tend to sound the same and most of them are instrumental.

Anticon

Kings Of Leon
"Only By The Night"

*****
Kings of Leon are going for the big time on this new release and it is easy to hear why. Long lost are the scratchy lo-fi style rock recordings. They have no replaced that song with a more slick 70’s style sound that still fits the band perfectly. These tight wearing boys are still young enough to have a long and lasting career as they are already on their 4th record and they are still under the age of 30. By far the best song on this album is “Sex On Fire”. No matter how much I try I can’t stop playing this song. Yes it really is that good as its got the perfect combination of thumping beats to get you dancing and humming along all day / night long.

RCA

The Uglysuit
"The Uglysuit"

****
If you think Band Of Horses is epic sounding, then you need to listen to this band. The Uglysuit is truly one of the most epic sounding bands that I have ever heard. Each song sounds like it could fit perfect on any car commercial or soundtrack for a good mountaintop adventure. The songs inspire a great sense of hope while giving out a strong soothing sound. Check them out this Saturday at our CMJ party.

Touch & Go

Hadouken
"Music For An Acclerated Culture"

***
When I first heard the singles “That Boy That Girl” and “Liquid Lives” I was super excited as the songs capture a perfect mixture of punk, rap(grime), and dance music all in one song. Hadouken sounds like a youthful mixture of The Prodigy, Klaxons, and Dizzee Rascal within these two songs. But the rest of the ten songs sound way too emo to make a major impact.

Surface Noise

Keane
"Perfect Symmetry"

***
We love Keane here at Crashin’ In. Their first two albums are among some of our favorite from the UK. Fans of James, Coldplay, and even Manic Street Preachers can hear a lot of love and quality in their lyrics. Unfortunately this 3rd album didn’t hit as hard for me, but nonetheless it is still really good. Each song is a solid ballad that is soppy and lovely enough to please the softhearted.

Interscope

Port O’ Brien
"All We Could Do Was Sing"

****
This California band make folky, jam band fun music that it is ok to like. Normally we would say down with the hippies, but when the hippies make music this good you have to listen. The lead song “I Woke Up Today” is so catchy and great that it is bound to end up on your playlist. Fans of Band Of Horses will enjoy this band.

City Slang

Chairlift
"Does You Inspire You"

*****
Chairlift formed in Boulder, Colorado in early 2006 to make live music for haunted houses. Frequenting the Broker Inn on the edge of town for empty late-night jazz shows, Caroline Polachek, Aaron Pfenning and Patrick Wimberly were mystified by the 1980's faux-gothic architecture, oak-cabinet aquariums, vacant dancefloors, fake trees, crystal chandeliers and dark velveteen booths. The inn provided them with the ideal setting for a new breed of pop: a place where subtle clashes blossomed into uncanny pleasures.

Relocating to Brooklyn in the summer of 2006, the trio continued on to develop a hypnotic yet tongue-in-cheek style, playing shows around Brooklyn and the Lower East Side with a thriving society of experimental pop magicians including MGMT, Yeasayer, Suckers, and Mixel Pixel.

This is their debut full-length album followed by the 7” single, “Evident Utensil”, which contains a remix by their friends, MGMT. A true buzz has been brewing about this band, as in the age of DIY loft parties and bands, this is a band that can truly play their instruments while still maintaining a highly experimental and creative edge to their own brand of pop music. Chairlift is the perfect band for fans of Yaz, Kate Bush, Beachhouse, and CocoRosie.

Kanine Records

Oasis
"Dig Out Your Soul"

****
This may not be the best Oasis album of all time, but it is still incredibly good. And as a fan I’m excited to hear that the boys can still pump out some great tunes. They even added some keyboards to the mix this time. Noel even has let the other members contribute some of their own songs to the mix this time around. Check out the singles “Shock Of Lightning” and “Bag It Up” first as these songs will get your up and excited again about Oasis like it is 1995 all over again.

Big Brother

Frances
"All The While"

****
This is the debut album from Brooklyn’s indie elite. But this isn’t some DIY warehouse band. France is a group of truly talented and classical trained musicians that truly know how to play their instruments. Fans of Sea Ray, Yo La Tengo, The Shins and will love the poppy and elegantly sounds of the catchy tune “Lighthouse”.

Gigantic Music

The Bronx
"The Bronx III"

****
Hard rocking LA dudes know how to pull out the big catchy beats while still making hard pounding tunes. This new album is everything that you would want from a modern rock band. It has punk roots, catchy choruses, and fast and furious guitar riffs. For those lucky souls that have seen the band live you know what we mean.

White Drugs

Cold War Kids
"Loyalty To Loyalty"

***
This is Cold War Kid’s sophomore release and one that we have been waiting to hear for a long time now. Unfortunately many of these songs pack as much bunch as their debut album kid. But “Something Is Not Right With Me” still stands out as an amazing blues rock inspired tune that will keep their fans satisfied.

Downtown Recordings

Jenny Lewis
"Acid Tongue"

****
This is Jenny Lewis’s second solo album. This childhood actress and front woman of Rilo Kiley truly shines when she goes it alone. We have never been fans of Rilo Kiley, but for some reason when Jenny decides to go it alone our hearts melt with glee. And it is easy to hear/see why when you listen to soft and sweet songs like “Black Sand”. Her country inspired folk songs truly know how to find a place in our hearts.http://www.myspace.com/jennylewismusic

Warner Bros.

Boo And Boo Too
"No Tempo"

****
I’m shocked that such an apocalyptic sounding rock band has come out of Kansas. This band’s tunes are truly way away from a traditional rock sound. They sound like a better version of Mogwaii with vocals. It is a nice treat to hear something so freshingly new sounding while still very accessible. Catch in NYC during CMJ.

Ironpaw Records

The Walkmen
"You & Me"

***
The Walkmen were one of the original NYC indie bands that sprouted from the 2000 music scene. You used to be able to see them play regularly at places like Brownies and Mercury Lounge. But since those days the band has transitioned into some much bigger than your average indie band. With their raspy vocals and angular guitars they have set the blueprint for modern indie rock. And this new album is a testament that they can still make great music. Although it doesn’t have a great single like “The Rat” the album is still a great listen.

Gigantic Music

The Submarines
"Honeysuckle Weeks"

****
I instantly feel in love with this record as it reminds me of The Cardigans, The Concretes, and St. Etienne. This LA duo craft sweet, electronic, and somewhat twee pop inspired, that is so fun and catchy that you can’t help but love it. The best songs are the songs with the girl vocals as her voice is heavenly. And girls seem to sing twee pop songs better.

Nettwerk

Neil Halstead
"Oh! Mighty Engine"

****
Many people know Neil as he was the lead singer in Slowdive and Mojave 3, now Neil also likes to write solo albums filled with tender folk songs to lay around on the beach to. As a fellow surfer, Neil has always embraced the quiet and tender side of life and his music clearly displays that. The great thing is that he does it so well that listening to his albums is a real treat.

Brush Fire

Correcto
"Correcto"

***
Correcto is a side project from one of the members of Franz Ferdinand with some of his other Scottish buddies. For this project the band takes a strong post punk approach to angular songwriting. You can hear a jerky dance number in “No One Under 30” that fans of Josef K will be proud of. But for those of you looking for more Franz Ferdinand inspired treats, you should just wait for the next FF record.

Domino

Sebastian Tellier
"Sexuality"

***
This French dude knows how to make sexy music. It’s like he was transplanted from the 70’s to a future electro lounge club. I hate to say this but this would be perfect music for a modern porn film. The music is super smooth, sexy, and soothing. Check out the single “Divine” as it is the best song on the album that even has a dancey groove to it.

Record Makers

Glasvegas
"Glasvegas"

*****
Glasgow has truly given us one of the coolest new bands to come out in a long time. Dressed in all black you would think that this band is going to be a dark and melancholy crew, yet apon first listen to their hit single “Daddy’s Gone” you instantly hear joyful 60’s doo-wap influenced sounds. Like the Jesus and Mary Chain and Johnny Cash before them, they may have a cool dark image but their songs inspire a large amount of hope with catchy choruses to sing along to.

Sony

TV On The Radio
"Dear Science"

****
TV On The Radio have brought us another great album full of great tunes. The band has taken a more R&B approach over their last doo-wappy sound that we all heard on their last album. The songs tend to sound even more laid back and psychedelic then before with still maintaining their pop edge.

Interscope

Metronomy
"Nights Out"

****
Dance music is getting even more wacky and weird with each new year. With bands taking on more of a dance edge every day, it is totally natural to hear them combining more rock and electronic elements together. But Metronomy like to mix things up by making their songs as weird as possible. Wit squelching vocals and squeaky samplers the band has made a cool dance record that is even weirder than Crystal Castles and Klaxons that still has a good pop edge. Check out “My Heart Rapid” first as this song is a great dance floor filler.

Because Music

High Places
"High Places"

****
This Brooklyn duo has been the talk of the town for a couple years now. Even though the band has garnished a large following within the hip / indie DIY market, they still record all of their songs in their apt themselves. And you can instantly tell once you hear these gorgeously recorded lo-fi electronic recordings. Each one is a lush psychedelic trip.

Thrill Jockey

Adventure
"Adventure"

**
Fans of instrumental electronic video game music will enjoy this release. It sounds as if they have had way too much fun with samplers and casios for years now.

Carpark

The 88
"Not Only…But Also"

**
Major labels love to sign mainstream rock bands and The 88 are no different. The songs are solid and fun tunes, but just not that original or exciting. Fans of Jet, Supergrass, and Velvet Revolver will enjoy this band.

Island

Softboiled Eggies
"Try It Again"

***
The downtown LA music scene is definitely fostering some cool new bands and you can catch many of them playing at the club, The Smell. Softboiled Eggies are no different than many of the new DIY spirited bands that are putting out cool new music. This album is filled with experimented lo-fi goodness.

Upset The Rhythm

The Long Blondes
"Singles"

****
Cute and dancey indie pop has always been a favorite among the music community. This indie band from Sheffield is no different in that they have managed to put out some cool dancey twee pop within their first two records. But within those albums there has been some great singles that didn’t get enough attention. Hince, the reason for this special release. Check out the songs, “Giddy Stratospheres” and “Separated By Motorways” first as they will remind you of why we all feel in love with them in the first place.

Angular

The Coral Sea
"Firelight"

***
This is the second album that I have gotten from this band and with each new release I look forward to listening to what they are up to. Radiohead, Coldplay, and Muse fans will instantly connect with their melancholy sound. The songs may have a somber edge, yet are done so well that you’ll continue to hit replay for hours on end.

Red Clover Records

Vancougar
"Canadian Tuxedo"

**
Everyone loves girls that know how to rock. It is the prime reason The Donnas are so popular. When I first heard about Vancougar I got super excited for this album. Unfortunately it is not as good as I expected it to be. But I’m sure the live experience will make up for the recordings as it is always exciting to see an all girl group live.

Mint Records

Friendly Fires
"Friendly Fires"

****
After The Rapture came out a whole crew of new rock bands came out and it seems that the UK is breeding more of them than from anywhere else. Every since the Bloc Party got big a new dance band from the UK has been getting big. The only problem is that many of them just don’t have the songs to back it up. But that is not the case with Friendly Fires. Just listen to the hit single, “Paris” and you’ll instantly hear a hit. And a hit it truly is.

XL Recordings

Of Montreal
"Skeletal Lamping"

****
Of Montreal release so many records that for many people it is hard to keep up with all of them. But for those that are true fans, each one is a special treat. On this new release Kevin Barnes has decided to take a more experimental route over his last previous pop hits. Although most of the album doesn’t contain poppy singles, you can still count on “Id Engager” to stick in your head all night long. Of Montreal is the wacky indie pop band that you can always rely on to continue making indie pop fun.

Polyvinyl Records

Noah And The Whale
"Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down"

****
Noah And The Whale is UK folk pop at its best. Their hit single “5 Years Time” is so catchy that you can’t help but hit repeat on your player over and over again. They know how to mix elements of indie, folk, and world music so well that the sound as if they have been playing music together sense they were born and this is only their debut album. With a sound this fresh and exciting you can’t help but wanna listen.

Mercury Records

Fujiya & Miyagi
"Light Bulbs"

***
Sometimes you get one of those mystery bands that hardly tours, I mean hardly even plays out, yet their music is so cool, mysterious, and well good that they end up doing well. Just like bands like Dungen, Aerial Pink, and Blank Dogs this band is so well received simply on the basis of how great their songs are. Their post punk induced chants bring recent comparions to Cinic and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah while still retaining their own originality.

Full Time Hobby

The Shaky Hands
"Lunglight"

****
This new band has mastered the art of the blues/rock sound within the indie realm. Fans of Kings Of Leon and The Black Keys will enjoy their songs well into the night. The songs contain a Southern edge that is fun and catchy, while they still sound as if they have their feet drenched in an old dirty and raw edginess.

Killrockstars

The Pica Beats
"Beating Back The Claws Of The Cold"

****
Hardly Art is so far has great at finding some of the coolest new folk artists out there. The Pica Beats are no different in that they have made an album full of great folk induced pop tunes. Fans of Beruit and Fleet Foxes will enjoy this record as its the perfect kind of music to end your warm summer days to.

Hardly Art

The Little Ones
"Morning Tide"

***
These LA youngsters sure now how to bring out the sunshine with their music. And with great singles like “Morning Tide” it is easy to hear why. It is as if The Beach Boys have been reborn within these indie-poppers. If you haven’t heard this band yet, you are truly missing out. Check out this sophomore record, then go back and get their debut album for a real treat to warm up your afternoon with.

Chop Shop

The Dandy Warhols
"Earth To The Dandy Warhols"

****
The Dandy Warhols have been making cool Brit influenced pop since the early 1990’s. Each album that they make seems to get poppier, yet on the last couple of releases the band has been willing to take more chances and add in some weirder and more experimental elements to the mix. This album contains a lot of early shoegaze and pop influences, then tops it off with some cool electro experimentation. The best songs hit at the beginning of the album with “Mission Control” and “The World Come On”.

Beat The World Records

Telepathique
"Last Time To Earth"

***
This Brazilian duo loves to make music fun and dancy by mixing elements of indie, pop, house, jungle, and world music together. After listening to “Sex Drugs And Funk ‘n’ Roll” you will totally understand how great they are at mixing past and present musicial elements to make a fun and dancy sound.

The Control Group

Team Genius
"Team Genius"

****
This debut self released album is a pure joy of surprise/excitement. Their songs are catchy, poppy indie numbers that refuse to leave my head all day long. Fans of old K Records and Polyvinyl Records releases need to check them out.

Sea Sick
"Sea Sick "

****
Sea Sick migrated from the deary London neighborhoods to Williamsburg to give us a strong does of dreamy psych rock that fans of PJ Harvey and Bjork will truly love. This 7 song mini debut album is a prize in waiting. We’ve had the privilege of having them play our party a couple times and each time is a delight. These artistic kids know how to put on a good show full of color and sound that eminates back into their recordings.

The Dears
"Missles"

*
This indie band from Montreal has been around for ages now. The only problem is that they continue to make unimpressive and melancholy music that passes for a bad version of Morrissey which is completely unnecessary in today’s musical climate.

Dangerbird

Jean on Jean
"Jean on Jean"

*****
Molly Schnick’s new solo project, Jean on Jean is about feelings. When her longtime band Out Hud broke up in 2005, she started over from the beginning. She bought audio recording software and a microphone and set about to write songs on cello and guitar that spoke to a time of tremendous change. Over the next three years, she developed the sound slowly, dragging her set up around to her various Brooklyn apartments, adding layers of strings, vocals, guitars, organs and percussion when appropriate.

The results of her labors are the nine songs that make up the self-titled album “Jean on Jean”. The sound is warm, lush and orchestrated, like Colin Blunstone’s “One Year” or Judee Sill’s “Heart Food”. And like those records, the lyrics are personal, focused on the highs and lows that go along with any major change. Jean on Jean is a terrific record for fans of Grizzly Bear, Sian Alice Group, and Mazzy Star.

Kanine Records

Awesome Color
"Electric Aborignines"

***
Besides having one of the coolest names in the music business, Awesome Color make super charged and fun garage psych rock, dirty Brooklyn style. You can often find them playing out in all age loft and warehouse parties all over Brooklyn. If you manage to make it to one of their shows you’ll find a ton of kids going crazy for this fun band. The music is simple garage rock, Stooges style, but so full of energy that you can’t help but love it. Like their first album, this sophomore album contains some of the best album artwork out there.

Ectastic Peace

Wetdog
"Enterprise Reversal"

*****
This is an awesome record, hands down. I love the scratchy, screamy vocals. Each song sounds like a breath of fresh air. This is a band that is not afraid to take risks. They are moving in a new punk direction that many DIY bands have been trying to achieve for years now. Fans of Blood Brothers, Ponytail, and early Glass Candy will find this band’s music refreshing.

Angular Records

Jordan
"Oh NO! We Are Dominos"

***
Carrying on old punk and post punk ethics these French boys bring haunted memories of Dischord, SST, and GSL records out of the vaults. You can hear it in their chanting all the way from Paris. Fans of The Bronx, Fugazi, Q and Not U, and Arab On Radar will find a home with this album. Catch them while they are on tour in the U.S. now.

Myloney Records

Late Of The Pier
"Fantasy Black Channel"

****
These three UK youngsters have made one of the craziest experimental dance records. Mixing prog, disco, funk, psych, and electro all together the band sounds like a crazy mix. Each song is fun, but way out on the weird side. It is as if they purposes tried not to make pop songs. Instead they decided to venture off into a new experimental direction. This album sounds like a kitchen experiment where you would throw Muse, The Darkness, Klaxons, and Beatles records into the blender to see what came out. The result might be extremely weird, but it’s very exciting and orginal.

EMI

Wild Billy Childish and The MBE’s
"Thatcher’s Children"

****
Billy Childish has been making the same style of music for generations now. And thank goodness for us that he is truly one talented individual. We try and collect each and every single one of his releases. Billy often takes on a new character by creating a new band to play along with on each new album, but nonetheless his musical sound retains its original garage rock sound. On this new album Billy Childish forms a new band that pokes fun of his own government (Margaret Thatcher). Being as that is the subject for his new album, “Thatcher’s Children” is actually the best song on the album, with it containing a strong garage rock stomp.

Damaged Goods

Streetlab
"Del Ctrl"

***
Steetlab is a duo of two NYC engineers, producers, remixers, djs, and now live entertainers. They recently just started playing out live and we got the chance to have them perform live at our Aug. 22 party. Their fusion on indie/rock with modern dance beats and samples makes for some super fun tunes. Check out the best song on this debut EP, “NYSound”. For those of you in love with the DFA sound, it will remind of you LCD Soundsystem “Losing My Edge” previously hit single. Another great song is “She Is Our Music” which features Kaia Wong of Mixel Pixel fame. The best part is, that the EP comes packaged in a USP port. Now that’s modern music.

The Ettes
"Look At Life Again Soon"

****
It seems that garage rock never goes out of style. The Ettes is a testament to that fact. Their poppy garage boogie sounds timeless. Just listen to “Crown Of Age”. This is a song that you can hear yourself listening to for years to come. Recorded at the legendary London studio, Toe Rag Studios by Liam Watson, The Ettes is keeping it real by making fun music to break all time barriers.

Cof Cof
"Who Said Party"

*****
We first learned about this band via Myspace. I can’t remember how we first heard about them, but as soon as we wrote them about how much we liked their music, they replied back right away about coming over to NY from Spain to play some shows/parties. So we booked them to play our little party and were instantly blown away with how much fun they were. Their music is simple, yet tons of fun. Fans of CSS, Bonde Do Role, Crystal Castles, and New Young Pony Club will love bouncing around to these songs. Each song is layered in a simple, yet highly danceable rhythm, then topped off with some cynical lyrics about loser boyfriends (“Dirty Tricks”) and partying (“Forbidden Coctail”). Ana and Alex sing in English with a cute accent that adds an adorable touch to their music and keeps the songs completely original. This album is only eight songs long, but each song is a hit single that will keep you satisfied for months on end.

"Night Shot"

****
Dan Geller, one of the owners of Kindercore Records has been playing in bands for ages now. Each time he has a new band, it is exciting to hear what he is up to. After he ended I Am The World Trade Center, he decided to take a new plunge into something that was just as much fun, but also wanted to add his love of rock music to this new dance incarnation. The result is a supercharged group full of cockrock dance tunes that will keep you dancing and laughing all summer long. Check out the single “So Damn High” and try and not tell me that you were having the best time while listening to this track. Fans of Chromeo, The Darkness, and Electric Six will totally go ape-shit over these tunes. As a bonus package the album also contains cover versions from some of Indies’ greatest, The Raveonettes, Headlights, Mountain Goats, Beach House, Black Mountain, Destroyer, and more.

Kindercore

Johnny Flynn
"A Larum"

***
Johnny Flynn sounds like an Irish folk artist that is conjuring up the youthful spirit of Bob Dylan while wandering like a lost soul in search for truth and adventures in life. You can hear traces of a new worldly folk sound that has become ever so popular with bands like Beirut. This is definitely a worldly record that has the ability to crossover to multiple audiences while still maintaining a true sense of originality and creativity.

Lost Highway

VV Brown
"VV Brown"

****
People are always going to be in love with the sweet girl sounds of the 60’s. And every since Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Sharon Jones, and Estelle started to get more popular more female artists are popping up with similar sounds. VV Brown is no different in that she sings like she could easily of been a star in the early 60’s. But her songs are so addictly sweet that you forgive her for sounding so retro. This is definitely a cool album full of hit singles to please any girl group lover.

Island

Tricky
"Knowle West Boy"

***
Everyone loved Massive Attack tremendously, but as Tricky was one of the main characters you got to give him credit as well. His strong combination of hiphop, reggae, and trip-hop is a perfect musical blend. Check out the hit single, “Council Estate”, first as this song is a home run. Fans of Dizzee Rascal should also check out this album. It may have been a long time since Tricky has been around, but by the sound of it, he still has got the goods to stay prevalent.
