Awesome Color
"Electric Aborignines"

***
Besides having one of the coolest names in the music business, Awesome Color make super charged and fun garage psych rock, dirty Brooklyn style. You can often find them playing out in all age loft and warehouse parties all over Brooklyn. If you manage to make it to one of their shows you’ll find a ton of kids going crazy for this fun band. The music is simple garage rock, Stooges style, but so full of energy that you can’t help but love it. Like their first album, this sophomore album contains some of the best album artwork out there.

Ectastic Peace

Wetdog
"Enterprise Reversal"

*****
This is an awesome record, hands down. I love the scratchy, screamy vocals. Each song sounds like a breath of fresh air. This is a band that is not afraid to take risks. They are moving in a new punk direction that many DIY bands have been trying to achieve for years now. Fans of Blood Brothers, Ponytail, and early Glass Candy will find this band’s music refreshing.

Jordan
"Oh NO! We Are Dominos"

***
Carrying on old punk and post punk ethics these French boys bring haunted memories of Dischord, SST, and GSL records out of the vaults. You can hear it in their chanting all the way from Paris. Fans of The Bronx, Fugazi, Q and Not U, and Arab On Radar will find a home with this album. Catch them while they are on tour in the U.S. now.

Myloney Records

Late Of The Pier
"Fantasy Black Channel"

****
These three UK youngsters have made one of the craziest experimental dance records. Mixing prog, disco, funk, psych, and electro all together the band sounds like a crazy mix. Each song is fun, but way out on the weird side. It is as if they purposes tried not to make pop songs. Instead they decided to venture off into a new experimental direction. This album sounds like a kitchen experiment where you would throw Muse, The Darkness, Klaxons, and Beatles records into the blender to see what came out. The result might be extremely weird, but it’s very exciting and orginal.

Wild Billy Childish and The MBE’s
"Thatcher’s Children"

****
Billy Childish has been making the same style of music for generations now. And thank goodness for us that he is truly one talented individual. We try and collect each and every single one of his releases. Billy often takes on a new character by creating a new band to play along with on each new album, but nonetheless his musical sound retains its original garage rock sound. On this new album Billy Childish forms a new band that pokes fun of his own government (Margaret Thatcher). Being as that is the subject for his new album, “Thatcher’s Children” is actually the best song on the album, with it containing a strong garage rock stomp.

Damaged Goods

Streetlab
"Del Ctrl"

***
Steetlab is a duo of two NYC engineers, producers, remixers, djs, and now live entertainers. They recently just started playing out live and we got the chance to have them perform live at our Aug. 22 party. Their fusion on indie/rock with modern dance beats and samples makes for some super fun tunes. Check out the best song on this debut EP, “NYSound”. For those of you in love with the DFA sound, it will remind of you LCD Soundsystem “Losing My Edge” previously hit single. Another great song is “She Is Our Music” which features Kaia Wong of Mixel Pixel fame. The best part is, that the EP comes packaged in a USP port. Now that’s modern music.

The Ettes
"Look At Life Again Soon"

****
It seems that garage rock never goes out of style. The Ettes is a testament to that fact. Their poppy garage boogie sounds timeless. Just listen to “Crown Of Age”. This is a song that you can hear yourself listening to for years to come. Recorded at the legendary London studio, Toe Rag Studios by Liam Watson, The Ettes is keeping it real by making fun music to break all time barriers.

Cof Cof
"Who Said Party"

*****
We first learned about this band via Myspace. I can’t remember how we first heard about them, but as soon as we wrote them about how much we liked their music, they replied back right away about coming over to NY from Spain to play some shows/parties. So we booked them to play our little party and were instantly blown away with how much fun they were. Their music is simple, yet tons of fun. Fans of CSS, Bonde Do Role, Crystal Castles, and New Young Pony Club will love bouncing around to these songs. Each song is layered in a simple, yet highly danceable rhythm, then topped off with some cynical lyrics about loser boyfriends (“Dirty Tricks”) and partying (“Forbidden Coctail”). Ana and Alex sing in English with a cute accent that adds an adorable touch to their music and keeps the songs completely original. This album is only eight songs long, but each song is a hit single that will keep you satisfied for months on end.

"Night Shot"

****
Dan Geller, one of the owners of Kindercore Records has been playing in bands for ages now. Each time he has a new band, it is exciting to hear what he is up to. After he ended I Am The World Trade Center, he decided to take a new plunge into something that was just as much fun, but also wanted to add his love of rock music to this new dance incarnation. The result is a supercharged group full of cockrock dance tunes that will keep you dancing and laughing all summer long. Check out the single “So Damn High” and try and not tell me that you were having the best time while listening to this track. Fans of Chromeo, The Darkness, and Electric Six will totally go ape-shit over these tunes. As a bonus package the album also contains cover versions from some of Indies’ greatest, The Raveonettes, Headlights, Mountain Goats, Beach House, Black Mountain, Destroyer, and more.

Johnny Flynn
"A Larum"

***
Johnny Flynn sounds like an Irish folk artist that is conjuring up the youthful spirit of Bob Dylan while wandering like a lost soul in search for truth and adventures in life. You can hear traces of a new worldly folk sound that has become ever so popular with bands like Beirut. This is definitely a worldly record that has the ability to crossover to multiple audiences while still maintaining a true sense of originality and creativity.

Lost Highway

VV Brown
"VV Brown"

****
People are always going to be in love with the sweet girl sounds of the 60’s. And every since Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Sharon Jones, and Estelle started to get more popular more female artists are popping up with similar sounds. VV Brown is no different in that she sings like she could easily of been a star in the early 60’s. But her songs are so addictly sweet that you forgive her for sounding so retro. This is definitely a cool album full of hit singles to please any girl group lover.

Holy Hail
"Independent Pleasure Club"

*****
Holy Hail is a group that clearly likes to have a ton of fun. And upon listening to this debut album, you will hear why. Cat's a rapper from the dirty south who's sister sings in a "praise and worship" band, Kevin's got a one in a million cat's eye and has never been on the Internet, Michally's a preacher's daughter and Matt's a Puerto Rican Jew. Together, with Michally's driving basslines, Matt's crisp backbeats and the rapid fire co-ed vocal duo of Cat and Kevin, Holy Hail draws on the honky tonk and the old school, Southern gothic and Westward expansion bringing in a new dance flavor to fill your ears with delight. They bring politically charged lyrics to the party, leading unsuspecting audiences to dance to the unlikely pairing of quirky dance-rock and observations on both the promise of America and its sprawling dark side. Holy Hail’s debut album reflects a wide range of influences: The Fall, New Order, X, Tom Tom Club, The Gossip, B52’s, and Fleetwood Mac. The band quickly has made a name for them by touring with The Rapture, The Presets, New Young Pony Club, Crystal Castles, and Bonde Do Role.

Monsters Are Waiting
"Ones and Zeros"

*****
These Los Angeles based indie poppers have made a stunning return to the throne with 6 new songs. They won us other with their debut album so much that we chased them around the country in order to get them to give us some more good tracks. The result is this fine collection of new songs. The lead song “Ones and Zeros” is a true hit in the waiting. Think a poppier version of Blonde Redhead and you are very close to what the band sounds like. Lead by haunting and beautiful female vocals the band takes us back to the mid 1990’s era of great indie pop songs that you can actually sing along to. Check out the Kanine Records website to see their new video now.

Tricky
"Knowle West Boy"

***
Everyone loved Massive Attack tremendously, but as Tricky was one of the main characters you got to give him credit as well. His strong combination of hiphop, reggae, and trip-hop is a perfect musical blend. Check out the hit single, “Council Estate”, first as this song is a home run. Fans of Dizzee Rascal should also check out this album. It may have been a long time since Tricky has been around, but by the sound of it, he still has got the goods to stay prevalent.

Domino

Caesars
"Strawberry Weed"

****
The Caesars have been around the block and back and have finally decided that after this album, they are going to call it quits. You may or may not know, but many of them are involved in other bands like Peter, Bjorn, and John that have been occupying their time lately. Caesars make fun pop/punk that fits perfectly in the summertime sun or fresh springtime air. Their music is light, poppy, dancey, and catchy. This album was originally recorded to be a double album, but the label decided that it would be too expensive to put out, so they picked the best 11 songs for this release. The hit single that you will want to hear first is “Waking Up”. It has a bit of a similar element to their previous hit “Jerk It Out”.

Astralwerks

Conor Oberst
"Conor Oberst"

***
Conor Oberst says that this album is unluck anything that he has ever done before with his band Bright Eyes, so he decided to release it under his own name. For any Bright Eyes fan out there, you won’t hear that much of a difference at all. Conor’s songs have the same delicate and dark sounds that he always manages to write. The only difference here is that he has finally released an album outside of the Saddle Creek world, which makes us wonder what is now going on in Omaha, now that this hero is no longer part of that scene.

Laura Marling
"Alas I Cannot Swim"

***
UK folkies seem to be popping out everywhere nowadays. Although this girl has a voice of an angel, her songs tend to sound a bit too mellow and unexciting. One thing that Laura does have is a true lyrically talent. Fans of Cat Power and Joni Mitchell will enjoy this delicate music.

Astralwerks

The Verve
"Forth"

*****
This album sounds like the band just left off from recording “Urban Hymns”. Most of it sounds like the song “Sonnet”. So those of you that loved The Verve poppy yet still mystical and ethereal sound will totally love this album. Set to bet up on my of the new indie bands that are still trying to find their own sound. The Verve are already there and after being gone for a good number of years, because they still have that great sound. Their sounds is one that will surpass generations to come. One that people will remember and hum along to while they do their daily chores. In other words it really is that good.

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson
"Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson"

***
This young Williamsburg hipster has made a folk album that has recently garnished him a ton of buzz. With the help of many of his friends; Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor Daniel Rossen, and Chris Bear, Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio you can easily see why people are taking interest in this youngster. Fans of Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young will find a home for this classic songsmith. Miles is truly is a modern poet that is making music where his soul oozes out with each note.

Brightblack Morning Light
"Motion To Rejoin"

****
Stoner rock can sometimes be cool. Especially when it contains a bit of shoegaze elements in it. BML doe stoner shoegaze rock extremely well, so in this instance yeah stoner rock is cool. This is a super cool record to listen to while working or chilling out after a hard day. The music is slow, super mellow, yet tripped out and cool. Even if you aren’t a pothead you’ll like this album.

Matador

Sic Alps
"U.S. EZ"

***
Low-fi greatness is what this label continually puts out and Sic Alps are now exception to the rule. In this new age of DIY bands, Siltbreeze is leading the game with many of their cool releases. Kids now just want bands that are willing to experiment and make music that sounds real, original, and unforgiving. If you desire something that is unpolished, unperfect yet, beautifully new and creative, Sic Alps are the band for you. For fans of Pavement, No Age, and Times New Viking.

Siltbreeze

Fabulous Diamonds
"Fabulous Diamonds"

***
More greatness from Siltbreeze. There must be something in the air in the Midwest that is bringing these bands to create such new and exciting music. Just like their fellow bands on the label the songs are recorded very lo-fi and DIY sounding. Yet each song is a cool new surprise. The band has played Brooklyn a couple times and each show sounds like a completely new set. So only check out this record if you truly want to adventure onto something new.

Dungen
"4"

*****
Psychedelic greatness is what Dungen create. This Swedish group has been making music for a while now, but have been only exposing it at their terms (little by little). This is actually their 5th release to date, but probably one of their best yet. It contains such a mellow, yet great psych feel to it that you can’t help but love each song. If you love the Charlie Brown soundtrack, then you’ll totally love this band. No kidding, they actually have a song that makes you feel like Snoppy is at the piano jamming away. And that is not the dope talking. It is true, just check out the single Satt Att Se” first and tell me that this isn’t the perfect record to hang and space out to.

Kemado

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis
"Kitty, Daisy & Lewis"

****
So imagine that, a bunch of sixteen year olds raided their dads’ record collections and actually feel in love with their fathers’ sounds of the 60s’. I guess those melodies just stuck in their heads. They loved it so much that they made a full album of covers from it. The problem is that the kids are really talented and have crafted some great tunes. Now just wait till they make their own songs. Then we’ll really have something to reckon with.

Sunday Best

XX Teens
"Welcome To Goon Ilsand"

****
This band used to be called Xerox Machine, but had to change their name due to copywrite infringement laws. But no matter, as it is truly didn’t affect the music in any way. It is just as weird, wacky, and fun to listen to as in the beginning. While listening to this album, expect to hear a post punk influenced band that refuses to follow any of the rules in musical education. Fans of Liars, The Pop Group, and Wire will enjoy this album.

Lucky Soul
"The Great Unwanted"

**
I’ve been collecting 7” singles by Lucky Soul for years now. Then when I found out that their full length was only coming out on cd, I got totally bummed. Their 7”s were truly amazing pieces of artwork. A band this cute, sweet, and sacred is not destined to be big in the mainstream, but no matter as I truly love their 60’s female fronted vocals. It is a refreshing experience to hear a Lucky Soul song each time I put one of their songs on. Now that the album has finally come out on vinyl, we are reviewing it. Yes we are that vinyl snobby. But no worries as a band this good is worth the wait, as good things/music increase in value with time.

Ruffa Lane

The Sugars
"The Curse Of The Sugars"

****
At first I thought this band would be another 60’s girl group gone doo-wap, but instead of that I got this cool, arty indie band that likes to bring a whole collection of sounds to the forefront. The Sugars are pure and simple fun. There is nothing complex to their music, but it is sometimes refreshing to just listen to a fun and simple indie band. And that’s exactly what you get from The Sugars. But be thankful as you never know when that style of music might go away.

Bad Sneakers

Friendly Fires
"Friendly Fires"

****
After The Rapture came out a whole crew of new rock bands came out and it seems that the UK is breeding more of them than from anywhere else. Every since the Bloc Party got big a new dance band from the UK has been getting big. The only problem is that many of them just don’t have the songs to back it up. But that is not the case with Friendly Fires. Just listen to the hit single, “Paris” and you’ll instantly hear a hit. And a hit it truly is.

XL Recordings

Jaguar Love
"Take Me To The Sea"

****
Jaguar Love consists of two ex-members of The Blood Brothers and one member of the now defunct band Pretty Girls Make Graves. This trio channel an old school punk vibe and make it modern by adding arty, screeching vocals that resemble a true art band. This ten song debut album will find fans with those that love punk bands that come from old DIY roots. They’ve already found fans with us, and hopefully they will with you too.

Matador Records

Emiliana Torrini
"Me and Armini"

****
Emiliana is truly a gifted songstress. Her vocal style is creative, unique, and highly talented. Not only is this her second album to date, but she has also worked on numerous albums with Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, Kylie Minogue, and also contributed on the soundtrack to The Lord Of The Rings. Fans of Regina Specktor, Kate Bush, and Joanna Newsome should check out Emiliana. “Jungle Drum” is a terrific song with a folky vocal style and rhythmic drum style that gives it a good dancey edge.

Rough Trade

Chairlift
"Does You Inspire You"

*****
Chairlift formed in Boulder, Colorado in early 2006 to make live music for haunted houses. Frequenting the Broker Inn on the edge of town for empty late-night jazz shows, Caroline Polachek, Aaron Pfenning and Patrick Wimberly were mystified by the 1980's faux-gothic architecture, oak-cabinet aquariums, vacant dancefloors, fake trees, crystal chandeliers and dark velveteen booths. The inn provided them with the ideal setting for a new breed of pop: a place where subtle clashes blossomed into uncanny pleasures.

Relocating to Brooklyn in the summer of 2006, the trio continued on to develop a hypnotic yet tongue-in-cheek style, playing shows around Brooklyn and the Lower East Side with a thriving society of experimental pop magicians including MGMT, Yeasayer, Suckers, and Mixel Pixel.

This is their debut full-length album followed by the 7” single, “Evident Utensil”, which contains a remix by their friends, MGMT. A true buzz has been brewing about this band, as in the age of DIY loft parties and bands, this is a band that can truly play their instruments while still maintaining a highly experimental and creative edge to their own brand of pop music. Chairlift is the perfect band for fans of Yaz, Kate Bush, Beachhouse, and CocoRosie.

Kanine Records

Jean on Jean
"Jean on Jean"

*****
Molly Schnick’s new solo project, Jean on Jean is about feelings. When her longtime band Out Hud broke up in 2005, she started over from the beginning. She bought audio recording software and a microphone and set about to write songs on cello and guitar that spoke to a time of tremendous change. Over the next three years, she developed the sound slowly, dragging her set up around to her various Brooklyn apartments, adding layers of strings, vocals, guitars, organs and percussion when appropriate.

The results of her labors are the nine songs that make up the self-titled album “Jean on Jean”. The sound is warm, lush and orchestrated, like Colin Blunstone’s “One Year” or Judee Sill’s “Heart Food”. And like those records, the lyrics are personal, focused on the highs and lows that go along with any major change. Jean on Jean is a terrific record for fans of Grizzly Bear, Sian Alice Group, and Mazzy Star.

Kanine Records

Oneida
"Pretten Weaponry"

***
Oneida are music veterans that have been releasing albums for over 10 years now. With each new release you never know what kind of sound you are going to get. The only thing you can be certain of is that each one will supply a cool, challenging, and interesting sound. On this new album the band takes a jammed out prog sound that is built around 10 minute jam sessions. Although this isn’t music that you’ll be humming all day long, it is truly some highly creative and innovative stuff worth checking out.

El Guincho
"Alegranza"

****
El Guincho was one of the most buzzed about artists at SXSW this past year. This South American creates all of his own sounds that bring a strong post punk dance feel out that is all sung in his native language. His dynamic shows have gotten people up in arms with excitement as they dance to his tropical mix of percussion and electronic musical flavors. This debut has already garnished a strong amount of attention, but it is truly with the live show that people are referring to El Guincho when they mention his name.

XL Recordings

Primal Scream
"Beautiful Future"

*****
We all know Primal Scream well by now. They’ve been around since the early 80’s Creation Records days. Bobby Gillespie, the lead singer, also used to drum in Jesus and The Mary Chain before he decided to do Primal Scream full time. And it is a good thing as they outlived his previous band. Each time Primal Scream seems to venture in new directions. Going from flower psych pop, to post comedown dance music, to electro, to 60’s hard hitting rock n’ roll, the band has hit every genre with star studding pride. Now they are talking on a more soulful, rocking, r&b style that suits them well. The lead songs tend to be “The Glory Of Love” and the first single “Can’t Go Back” single. Both are terrific songs that will continue to get tons of radio and club play around the world. Bjorn from Peter, Bjorn, and John even produced five songs out of the album. It is good to have the Scream back in full action.

Jay Reatard
"Singles 06-07"

*****
Jay Reatard is the most hard working musician in the music business today that I know of. He has played in so many bands and produced so many others that it is hard to name them all. But this musical punk is truly talented. Just check out some of his past records for The Reatards, Digital Leather, and Lost Sounds. Then listen to some other great new bands that he has produced like Cheap Time and The Strange Boys. Both are young up and comers from the Nashville, TN scene that are truly great garage pop. But if you truly want to hear some of Jay’s great stuff then you need to check out this singles collection. This collection captures some of Jay’s best work over the years. Starting off with my personal favorite, “Night of Broken Glass” and ending up with “Night Visions”, you are assured of some great hits here to spazz out to. If you haven’t been able to collect any of these rare and limited single releases, this collection is truly a treat. Also be on the lookout of the Matador singles collection coming soon.

Stereolab
"Chemical Chords"

****
Does the world really need another Stereolab record? Even though each record sounds the same, the answer is yes. Because they might follow a Kraut/pop similar path each time, they do it so well that it is always a treat to hear. And remember they are the originators of this sound. This is their 11th album to date and one that sounds just as fresh as their previous albums. This is the perfect album to listen to with your friends at any summertime outdoor party as the songs are light, airy, sweet, and poppy.

The Rascals
"Rascalize"

***
The Rascals got a ton of hype as the lead singer released an album with Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys under the name, The Last Shadow Puppets. Luckily for The Rascals the album was a massive success. We even go the pleasure of seeing them play a last minute show at the Cake Shop to only a hundred people. And yes they were great. Not to mention super cool/nice guys. And after all the hype of that was over, The Rascals released their own debut album. The only problem is that it doesn’t stand up to the quality of The Last Shadow Puppets album. It’s got some great rock/pop songs on it, but nothing that will blow you away. It is more just cool pub rock music with great outfits and haircuts.

Deltasonic

The Dutchess And The Duke
"She’s The Dutchess, He’s The Duke"

**
This is another group of young West Coast hipsters that think they are in the 60’s. With duel boy/girl vocals they sound like a raspy version of the Mama’s and The Papas. Unfortunately they just aren’t as good as their 60’s heroes. They even cover a Jim Morrison song. At first listen I totally couldn’t stand his voice, but after five listens got used to it. The playing is good, twangy, and folkified, but unfortunately the songs still don’t pack the punch that they need to stand out enough.

Hardly Art

Ill Ease And The Racket
"Turn It Loose"

****
Ill Ease has been playing and living around the Brooklyn scene for over 10 years now. Her music tends to be recorded in a lo-fi manner that makes her take on angular/folk music seem even more abstract. But one thing that seems to remain the same is that her music is truly original and inspiring. Each song is played in an angular guitar manner that bridges old post punk similarities to The Raincoats, while still sounding very much like a modern day Brooklyn band. Fans of Marnie Stern’s music will also enjoy Ill Ease.

Tickley Feather
"Tickley Feather"

***
Tickley is folk/weird coolness that fans of the new lo-fi movement will truly enjoy. Her sounds are delicate, beautiful, yet bewildering. Each song takes on a new character of sound. Fans of Animal Collective, Atlas Sound, and 60’s psych will enjoy venturing into Tickley Feather’s world. You can see her this summer on selective show dates with Chairlift and Aerial Pink.

Paw Tracks

Atlas Sound
"Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Fe"

****
Atlas Sound Is Brad Cox’s, the lead singer of Deerhunter, solo project. On this sophomore album Brad takes music even farther out of reach of reality with super spaced out jams and kraut-rock influences. You can hear Brad channeling a long lost era of Faust and Can on these recordings. Each one is tripped out music that is great to listen to at any time of the day. But best to listen to when you want to relax and let your mind wander.

Kranky

Death Cab For Cutie
"Narrow Stairs"

****
Death Cab For Cutie is the true sound of indie. This band defined what 90’s and early 2000 indie bands sound like. Ever since the OC championed them, the band finally broke out into the mainstream. But even though they now have gone on to release records on a major label, they have kept their original indie sound that made them so great in the first place. And this last album is a testament to how great their sound still is. Each song sounds just as fresh as they did 10 years ago. The only difference is that this time around the band doesn’t have to carry their own gear on stage.

Scarlett Johansson
"Anywhere I Lay My Head"

***
I know we aren’t supposed to like records by actors, but Scarlett Johansson truly has a magical voice. She makes me feel like I have been sweep away to a magical wonderland. This album she covers her favorite Tom Waits songs with the help of some of her friends; Nick Zinner(YYYs), David Bowie, Tunde Adebimpe(TV On The Radio), and David Sitek on production duties. With David on board they have taken normal folky songs to a new plain of adventure. This is a cool concept album that may not go down in history as one of the best albums ever, but still is cool enough to gain some cred as an interesting listen.

Shock Cinema
"Hell and Highwater"

*****
Returning one year later, Shock Cinema hit us with an album coming out under the moniker "Hell and Highwater”. The band has created an atmospheric soundscape for the high seas. If their debut was " a rash, clashing, noisily-engineered post-punk gnasher" (Big Takeover) flying by at break-neck punk speed, the follow up is more deliberate and varied, allowing you to take a breath and soak in everything on the horizon. Recorded partly in San Francisco and Brooklyn, this album was made with contributions from ex-members of Dragons of Zynth, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and The Rogers Sisters with Chris Cody(Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Tim Green(Fucking Champs) at the mixing desk. It is here that Destiny’s voice soars high above anything that you have heard before. Fans of Glass Candy, Celebration, and Pretty Girls Make Graves will be engrossed in these songs.

Kanine Records

Beck
"Modern Guilt"

****
Beck's new album was co-produced by Dangermouse. With that in mind we expected by things. And big things we got with the single "Gamma Ray". The song gives a punch and dancable clitchy pop feel that is super upbeat and tons of fun. The rest of the songs take on more of a slow and tripped out psych rock feel that gives a groovy old school Beck feel. All in all it is great to have Beck still around making cool new records.

Geffen

Abe Vigoda
"Skeleton"

*****
It seems many of these bands have actually been around quite a good number of years, but finally the world has got up with them. Along with No Age, Health, and Mika Miko these boys come out of the downtown LA all ages scene that inhabits the club, The Smell. Each song is a lo-fi punk/pop number that is played super messy, yet tons of fun to sing along to. Gone are the days when musicians worked super hard to master their playing skills. Instead the kids of today want to concentrate on trying to create a whole new era of sounds by trying to learn their own way of playing instruments. The rest might sound sloppy to some, but to a new age of kids, it is a beautiful new sound. And Abe Vigoda do that sound well, by capturing something that is truly unique, fun, youthful, and innovative.

Post Present Medium

The Presets
"Apocalypso"

****
The Presets are a perfect fit for the dance oriented Modular label. This Australian duo know how to get a party going by making music in the vain of Justice, Daft Punk, The Whip, and Simian Mobile Disco. The top song on this album is by far, “My People”, as its driving heavy electro beats and chanting chorus is the perfect thing to get you going at 2:00am. The album finally just arrived on vinyl, so we are reviewing it a bit late, but better late than never.

Dirty Pretty Things
"Romance At Short Notice"

***
Everyone knows that Carl used to be one of the head members of The Libertines. They were one of the most beloved bands in England. Why else do you think people still put up with Pete Doughtry’s bad behavior. Once Carl disbanded The Libertines, he went on to form Dirty Pretty Things with a more positive group of musicians. This is their sophomore album to date and one that continues on the same path as their debut album. It is filled with pop/punk numbers that are super fun to sing along to. The best song is “Tired Of England” as its chorus will stick in your head all day long.

Mercury

Crystal Antlers
"Crystal Antlers"

*****
Yes this is another buzz band that seems to have come out of nowhere, but the difference is that they are truly great. This Longbeach, California crew makes up a merry band of misfits. Each member has a completely different look. They look so different that you can’t even believe that they are all in the same band. But it doesn’t even matter as their music is truly that good. And the best part is that they are the nicest guys that you could ever meet. Their blend of psychedelic punk rock is truly breathtaking and this is only their debut self released demos put together as an EP. Just wait till the band gets a chance to record in a proper studio, they’ll be blowing minds. Fans of Black Mountain will completely love this band. Listen to the song, “A Thousand Eyes” and you’ll instantly be able to tell how great these guys are. Each song is a monster epic number that soars miles high. We got the chance to have them play our big summer day party and it was well worth it as they blew the place apart with excitement.

Black Kids
"Partie Traumatic"

*****
This is a terrific debut album from this young crew of nu-wave indie poppers. What makes it even better is that the band is from Jacksonville, FL, because no one good ever seems to come out of Florida. Not to down as I had a great time living there, but that’s just the way it is. The band plays fun dancey pop with a vocal style reminiscent to The Cure. Each song is tons of fun and filled with stuff that you will enjoy dancing along to at any party. Check out the hit single “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You”, even though you’ve already heard it in every club. When I first got this song I stayed up all night singing and dancing along to it. This is definitely one of the coolest debuts of 2008.

Almost Gold

Ratatat
"LP3"

***
These instrumental, experimental, dance heads have gone tropical and gypsy on us. This record sounds like the band has been hanging out with Buena Vista Social Club too long. Although the songs are a ton of fun, they lack the modern day dance excitement that we are looking for in a band like this. But never fear as they still give you some great numbers like "Mumtaz Khan" that will fill your headphones with glee. This is great driving music for fans of Aphex Twin.

The Faint
"Fascination"

***
We totally love this band. When we first heard of them during the "Blank Wave Arcade" days, that record was a standard in every dj set that we played. And it was well deserved as the crowd would go crazy every time. But unfortunately it has been too long since the band has put out a new record and their sound has slowed down into a mellow and experimental industrial tempo. The music is still super cool, but there is nothing on here that is going to make the dance floor go as crazy as it used to. "I Treat You Wrong" even sounds a bit like Depeche Mode trying to experiment with industrial sounds. If someone was to remix "Mirror Error" and make it more upbeat, then we might have a hit on our hands. Other wise I would advice everyone to focus on their earlier material as that is the best stuff(the last three previous albums).

Workers Institute

The Shortwave Set
"Replica Sun Machine"

****
This debut album is a real treat for indie pop fans from all over the world. It was produced by Dangermouse, which already gives it our seal of approval. This Scottish group has made some of the loveliest pop songs that you could ever want to hear. Fans of Belle & Sebastian will love this band. Their songs are so uplifting that it feels like they have captured the spirit of The Beach Boys perfectly.

Wall of Sound

Oxford Collapse
"Bits"

****
Oxford Collapse is one of Brooklyn’s most beloved bands. This is their fourth full length album to date. The band started out as a fired up post punk dance oriented band, but soon forged more into an early 90’style American indie band that brings strong comparisons to Husker Du. This release was originally going to be a double album, but the band decided to simply release it as a 13 song album and take the other songs to release as multiple releases with other indie labels as EP’s and singles. So be on the lookout for those as well. Each release is collector’s treat.

Sub Pop

Titus Andronicus
"The Airing Of Grievances"

****
There is quite a buzz about this band and the buzz is well deserved. This lo-fi recorded album brings back memories of listening to old records by Minutemen and Firehouse. They have captured the old late 80’s and early 90’s lo-fi old school punk sound perfectly, while still maintaining a fresh and modern sound.

Troubleman Unlimited

My Milky Way Arms
"My Milky Way Arms"

***
This is the debut Ep from this Houston, TX duo. The duo’s music is an ethereal electronic combination of blissful songs. The duo pair up with the spiritual world and harness some lost souls in order to make some quite mystical music. Fans of M83, Maps, and The Flaming Lips take note.

This is the sophomore album from the coolest Brazilian dance pop band to ever invade our shores. The band scored a homerun with their debut album with the help of their nonstop touring schedule. This is truly a party band that takes the party anywhere that they play. The band landed on numerous people's top albums of the year charts and judging by this new album, it seems that they will do the same this year again. Just listen to the top new songs "Jager Yoga" and "Rat Is Dead" from this album and if you aren't dancing around your room in excitement, then you truly are in need of a good night out on the town.

The Music
"Strength In Numbers"

****
The Music are an amazingly underrated English band. This is their 3rd album to date and one that deserves to get a good amount of praise. It isn't as good as their debut album, but one that still packs a good punch. Check out the singles "Strength In Numbers", "Fire", and "Vision" for some good dance rock tunes. The Music mix high energy songs with influences from The Stone Roses, Led Zepplin, and The Prodigy to make a truly unique sound.

Polydor

White Denim
"Workout Holiday"

***
This California three-piece seemed to come out of nowhere. Instantly they were on every blog. After a couple 7" singles the band has finally released a full length album. Being from the California DIY experimental scene you get a bunch of songs that cater to the kids that love noise bands. Then the band mixes in a variety of bluesy garage attributes to make it fun and punky. All in all this is an album that is fun to listen to on any occasion.

Full Time Hobby

Cut Copy
"In Ghost Colours"

*****
This is one of the best indie dance records of the year. Backed with a New Order vibe these Australians know how to get kids dancing. And to top it off, they can actually play their own instruments while putting on one hell of a live show. The hit song “Light and Music” can be heard in any bar/club all across the world, as it’s truly an amazing song. Most of the album’s songs tend to sound all the same, but at least you’ll know that they are all great, unlike many new albums out there today.

When my buddy told me to check out this new band from Sweden, I immediately jumped as Sweden has been putting out tons of great stuff in the last 10 years. Since the government funds a lot of the arts, artists can afford to take the time to truly perfect their work and come out with some amazing stuff. And amazing they do. This one man, white funker has brought a new meaning to soul music. “Don’t Mess” is a song that any fan of Prince or Chromeo will love. This is instant dance floor material that will get any girl moving. So if you are a dj or guy looking to score this will be the music that you’ll want to arm yourself with.

The Black Ghosts
"The Black Ghosts"

***
This UK duo have been teasing us for almost 2 years now by releasing great club banger singles, but now are finally ready to give us their full length album. Even though these singles have already been released they still hold up as the best songs on the album; “Any Way You Choose To Give It” and “I Want Nothing”. Fans of Hot Chip, SMD, The Presets, Cut Copy, LCD Soundsystem need to check out The Black Ghosts.

Iamsound

Silver Jews
"Look Out Mountan, Lookout Sea"

*****
Nashville, TN is truly home to country music, but over the last decade it has also sprung a new crop of bands that are taking their American country and blues roots to new levels. Silver Jews have truly taken traditional roots music to an unsurpassing level. This is their 8th album to date and one that is truly a masterpiece. Fans of Wilco, My Morning Jacket, and Black Mountain will savior their heartfelt songs. They sing with a dark undertone similar to Nick Cave and The Black Heart Procession, but with a heart as soft as an angel. If you are looking for an album that you can actually continue to listen to over and over again, then this is an album for you.

Drag City

Monotonix
"Body Language"

***
All the way from Israel, Monotonix is bringing us fast and furious sludge rock that will excite any musical fan. They are already well known for their amazing live shows that excite chaos by inticing a ton of audience participation. Fans of The Melvin need to take note. This is a band that is already gaining a ton of attention and will soon be on everyone's radar. But don't just get their album, go see them live as that is where their true talent lies.

Drag City

The Virgins
"The Virgins"

**
The Virgins are another NYC Lower East Side rock band that has followed the new retro rock formula to a "T". They've got the vocal slur of The Strokes, the rhythm of The Police, and an angular guitar sound that resembles The Modern Lovers. This album is good but with all of the hype it should be amazing. It is with the song "Rich Girls" that the band truly hits their stride. This is a band that makes songs to go drinking to on a weekend night while checking out some girls.

Atlantic

King Khan & The Shrines
"The Supreme Genius Of"

*****
Let the good times roll as the party has begun. The instant you hear the name King Khan, you know that you are in for one hell of a party. This musical mastermind knows how to get you grooving with any band that he plays with(The Shrines or BBQ Show). Blending funk, soul, and garage boogie together each song is tons of fun. Fans of James Brown, Motown, Parliament, and The Black Lips will all love this album. So get aboard the party bus and enjoy the ride.

Vice

Darker My Love
"2"

****
This is by far one of the coolest underrated bands out today. Fans of The Warlocks, BRMC, Spirtualized, and BJM will all want to hear this band. Their spaced out psych rock gives out the coolest vibe since the early days of Spacemen 3. Although this band has put out three albums they still seem to be unknown to the majority of the musical world. But to those of you that like to follow your own path of musical discovery, you’ll be glad that you checked out this band.

Dangerbird

Sam Sparro
"Sam Sparro"

**
This ex-Brit now lives in LA and has probably been hanging out at too many Steve Aoki and Frankie Chan club/rave nights, as this album is full of club bangers. Unfortunately most of the songs take the cheese level too far. It is with the terrific hit “Black and Gold” that saves this album from complete silliness. This song is a perfect blend of silly, but completely fun lyrics and beats to get any weekend warrior going. Check out the Phones remix as well. Fans of Chromeo, Scissor Sisters, and Calvin Harris should check out the single “Black and Gold”.

Universal

Falcon
"Falcon EP"

****
Falcon is a NYC band that consists of one of the members of Longwave along with some other indie kids that have a strong love for shoegaze pop. This is an EP that could of easily come out in 1995. Fans of an early Brit pop sound will truly find solace in these soothing and melodic songs. Each one is buttered up with dreamy guitars that any Ride fan will enjoy.

Friends Of The American Songbook

The Muslims
"The Muslims"

*****
When my buddy Paulie first emailed me that he was managing a new band from California and wanted some help setting up shows in NY for them to play, I never thought that they were going to be this good. But after seeing them play two out of their ten packed out shows, within only one week, I instantly feel in love and knew that this was truly one special band. While watching them play, we all looked at each other with that look that we knew we were watching something that was going to be huge. This was a similar feeling that I had while seeing The Strokes in 2000 at Mercury Lounge and Jay Reatard at Death By Audio last year. This is a band that doesn’t give a care about the fashion crowd. Instead they take an old post punk approach by wearing regular college style prep clothes. But not like Vampire Weekend, they dress more like regular baseball suburban boys. By not having to focus on their style, the band wins over the crowd with their incredible angular garage pop songs. You can hear traces of Television and Modern Lovers all over each song. It sounds as if Jonathan Richman has been reborn as a 20 something year old kid. Fans of Black Lips, The Strokes, and The Ramones will all fall instantly in love with this band. I know we all have. Let the label bidding war begin.

Sarandon
"Kill Twee Pop!"

****
This UK outfit is completely under the radar, but that does not mean that they shouldn’t be noticed. Upon checking out their myspace page you will see that they have lots of releases out, yet it took this new release for us to finally take notice. This album sounds like a more punk version of Love As All. With raspy vocals, angular guitars, and signature 1.5 minute songs they manage to make highly original and high energy songs that are so catchy that you’ll sing along to them all day long.

Slumberland

Mar
"The Sound"

***
1990’s indie sound keeps coming back and this album is a testament of that. Fans of Death Cab For Cutie, Versus, and Sebadoh will like this new band. Jimmy LaValle(The Album Leaf and Black Heart Procession) and Samuli Kosminen (Mum) got together one bring month in Iceland at Siqur Ros’s studio to make this new project. The album includes guest appearances from members of Bright Eyes and Rasputina.

Ring Road

NERD
"Seeing Sounds"

**
Unfortunately all of the other press is right. This album overall is not that good. It lacks the amount of excitement that you would expect from Pharrell except for the two great tracks "Everyone Nose" and "Spaz". These two tracks will get any party going.

Interscope

James Pants
"Well Come"

***
There has been an insane amount of buzz for James Pants lately. With this new release he has brought a wide mix of electronic beeps with simple old school raps over the top. The album takes a wide arrangement of sounds. Each one primarily contains a chilled out vibe that settles on a solid 70's groove.

Stones Throw

Modey Lemon
"Season Of Sweets"

***
Modey Lemons return with a new album full of swampy, droney, and noise induced guitar fuzz. Fans of ExModels, The Apes, Liars will really like this new release. This Pittsburgh band know how to take garage rock to the next level by combing Krautrock influences to make a whole sound that will invoke new emotions within your yourself. Be prepared for one exceptional cool new record.

Birdman

Cheap Time
"Cheap Time"

*****
I don’t know how they do it, but In The Red always manages to put out some of the coolest bands. Cheap Time is no exception to that rule. This album is packed with solid songs. Although many of the songs tend to sound the same, their lo-fi garage rock will please any fan of Jay Reatard, Modern Lovers, and Billy Childish. This is an album that you’ll really want to own as you’ll want to continue listening to it over and over again. Their retro 70’s style album cover, makes them look even cooler.

In The Red

Coldplay
"Viva La Vida"

*****
Many people will rag on you for liking the band, but the truth is that they truly are great. Chris Martin has a voice that truly is inspirational. This is a band that almost anyone can like and that is not a bad thing. On this new album they soar high on these singles; "Lost", "Viva La Vida", and "Violet Hill". Each one packs a new and interesting punch while still trademarking their recognizable sound. So don't be afraid to like them, because your friends will make fun of you. There is a reason why they are so big and it is because they are actually a great band.

Capitol

The Fratellis
"Here We Stand"

***
These UK boys are back with another rock/pop album. This time they have gone down the path of pure pop that resembles The Beatles with a strong rock catchiness that Supergrass does so well. The best songs land on “My Friend John” and “Mistress Mabel”. This is by far more mainstream sounding than their previous album, but still has the hooks to get you going.

Island

Ill Ease
"Turn It Loose"

***
This female solo-ist has been playing the NYC/Brooklyn DIY scene since the early 90’s. In that time she has managed to release a crop of cool lo-fi folk/pop records. Each one is a new treat for any artistic ear. On this new release you can hear Ms. Sharp taking a new stab at creating a more southern twang sound that Holly Gollightly does so well. Along with making music, Elizabeth is also a well known photographer that has her collection in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Ionik Recordings

Fleet Foxes
"Fleet Foxes"

****
The Seattle sound has sure changed over the years, going from grunge to nu-folk. With bands like Band Of Horses and now Fleet Foxes coming out with these epic folk songs, it is totally a new place. Maybe it is the fact that Seattle is home to Starbucks and endless coffee shops. One will never know. Regardless Fleet Foxes have come out with a terrific debut that will find fans of all ages. With their tender, catchy, and inspirational songs you can easily hear why people are making such a fuss over this new band. Also check out their debut EP as the songs there are superb. Don’t be surprised when you hear Fleet Foxes on numerous upcoming commercials as their songs are soaring epic numbers that can transcend numerous musical decades.

Sub Pop

My Morning Jacket
"Evil Urges"

***
When this band first came out I was blown away with how amazing their music made me feel. You get a strong sense of calmness and freedom when you listen to their songs. Fans of Band Of Horses and Fleet Foxes might think they are in on the new alt. country sound, but My Morning Jacket know how to do it proper as they’ve been doing it for many years now. Although I think their previous albums are much better than this new album, these new songs still capture some of the magic that these guys have. The difference is that this time they seemed to go with a more country twang sound over strong epic ballads for their hit singles.

ATO

Jamie Lidell
"Jim"

***
Jamie Lidell is one soulful man that sings like he is still living in the 70’s. On this new album he hits two homeruns with the songs “Little Bit Of Feel Good” and “Hurricane”. It is here that he brings out his best vocals and groove to get you dancing. These are the kind of songs that would make Otis Redding proud.

Warp

The Pigeon Detectives
"Emergency"

***
This band first came out at the height of the Libetines, post The Strokes era with a debut album that packed a good sold punch. They were a cool indie rock band that made sold catchy rock songs that you could sing along to all night long while punching your fists in the air. Now they have come back with their sophomore album that ventures more into the pop punk direction. Gone are all of the fist pumping songs. Instead you have a more melodic approach. But they do manage to give us one great single with “This Is An Emergency” that flavors the sound that we found on their debut album. This is a great single that will continue to please their fans until they manage to give us another new album in 6 months time.

Dance To The Radio

The Wedding Present
"El Rey"

***
It is hard to believe that David Gedge and his crew are still making cool indie records. This is a band that was at the head of the alternative indie scene since the late 1980’s. Their catalog is so deep with great releases that is insanely impressive. They maybe in their 40’s now, but the band still knows how to write great songs. Each one sounds just as fresh as the early days. But for a true musical discovery check out some of their earlier releases like the “Hit Parade” series. Those were some truly magical records.

Vibrant

TK Webb and the Visions
"Ancestor"

***
TK Webb has been playing around the East Coast for many years now. Although he has mostly been under the radar to the national public, his music has garnished fans from fellow musicians from the best of the best. His combination of blues, retro rock, and slacker indie spills out well onto this new release. Each song sounds as if it could only be recorded by some in their fifties, but TK is still rip with age in his 20’s. As he continues to belt his soul out, plenty of hard fuzzed out guitars back him to make a sound that fans of Bob Dylan, Led Zepplin, and The Rolling Stones will all love.

Kemado

The Airborne Toxic Event
"The Airborne Toxic Event"

*
This band might be big in LA, or at least that is what their press kick says, but by listening to this album I wouldn’t want to be at any of their shows. Their crowd must be filled with really boring people that don’t like music with any creative or original edge to it, because this band sounds like a repeat of U2, Midnight Oil, and The Killers all over again. Sorry but this is truly really just boring music. Not that it is bad, just boring mainstream music. And we all ready have enough of that. And they wonder why the music industry is having problems.

Majordomo Records

Weezer
"Weezer"

*****
It is by no surprise that the new Weezer album is really good. This is a band that continually writes great hits. Everyone remembers this band from their huge hits “Buddy Holly” and “Sweater”, but hopefully they’ll continue to follow them as they continue to write great songs like “Pork and Beans”. Unlike many bands, as these guys get older, you don’t get a sense that they are losing any creative talent. Instead they continue to write songs that are relevent for their age and time. This album assures us that indie’s great heroes have still got the goods. For more big hits, also check out the songs on this album “Troublemaker”, The Greatest Man That Ever Lived”, and “Everybody Gets Dangerous”.

Interscope

The Vandelles
"The Vandelles EP"

****
The Vandelles have always been a favorite of ours. This fuzzed out, surf rock band sure knows how to tickle us with delight. This is a new 5 song EP is filled with exactly what you want from this Brooklyn crew; loud and distorted guitars that hark back to the days of Jesus and Mary Chain (“Psychocandy”). You can often catch this crew hanging and playing with A Place To Bury Strangers, as they’re sound is well fitted together. The Vandelles are by far one of the coolest Brooklyn bands in our lifetime that know how to make a great wall of noise sound beautiful.

Safranin Sound

Golden Animals
"Free Your Mind And Win A Pony"

****
Psych, folk rock has always been big in the States. There is an endless amount of travel options filled with open roads, countrysides, city life, and deserts to inspire any creative mind. And that is exactly the formula that inspired this duo, Linda and Tommy, when it came time to create this debut album. They left the dirty sidewalks of Williamsburg, Brooklyn for the greener pastures of LA to record an album filled with Jim Morrison’s ghost. At first it sounds almost like you are listening to a lost album by The Doors, until Linda’s soft dreamy vocals kick in bringing more modern comparisons to Lavandar Diamond.

Adem
"Takes"

***
Adem is an one man, multi-instrumentalist that is well loved in his England homeland. This is a truly talented man that can play almost any instrument known to mankind. Although his music seems to take a slow tempo, his lyrics are pure poetry. Fans of Badly Drawn Boy, Spiritualized, and White Williams will find solace in Adem’s work.

Domino

Health
"Health/Disco"

****
Health is one of the coolest noise/experimental bands to come out of the LA DIY all ages scene. Their debut album was recorded at the club, The Smell, to try and capture what the band was truly about. Unfortunately it didn’t even come close to capture the insane energy and excitement that you will fitness from them live. This remix album takes the band on a different journey by supplying remixes from many of their friends. The best remixes of this album come from Crystal Castles (“Crimewave”), Pictureplane (“Lost Time”). Crystal Castles take the song on an electro rollercoaster making it bleep in and out to a dancing freezy. Then Pictureplane take their song by adding tribal percussion elements giving it a post punk chanting vibe that truly will get anybody grooving on the dancefloor. This album is truly a treat for any indie or dance kid out there.

Love Pump United

Ra Ra Riot
"The Rhumb Line"

****
Finally these NY favorites have released their debut full length album. Unfortunately we already know most of the songs from seeing the band play live over 200 times, but at least we know they are ones that we really like. So this album seems like a best of to many of us. To those that have never heard of the band before this album will be a real treat of musical discovery. Start of with the song, “Dying Is Fine”, as this is truly the band at one of their best moments.
