"Dreaming"
*****
Finally the debut 7” single has come out from Brooklyn’s favorite dream/shoegaze band. For this special treat they give us two new songs, “Dreaming and “Listless”. Both are terrific songs for fans of My Bloody Valentine. Two of the members of this band also play in The Pains of Being Pure At Heart.

Sonic Youth
"The Eternal"
***
This new album is another solid good release from indie’s masters. Sonic Youth bring you exactly what you want from them; tons of feedback, fuzzy guitars, and raspy vocals. So if you are a big fan of the band, then you’ll totally love this album. If you have never owned a Sonic Youth record before, check out their two best previous albums, “Daydream Nation” and “Goo”.

Pet Shop Boys
"Yes"
****
The Pet Shop Boys have been around since the early 80’s. They know how to write terrific pop hooks. But even though they have been playing and writing songs for that long, the duo still has what it takes to turn out great songs. And this new album is a testament to that. Check out the singles; “Love etc.”, “Did You See Me Coming”, “All Over The World” if you want to get your groove on.

"Under And Under"
*****
This album is a suburb treat. Packed with twenty songs you get an amazing collection of songs that were mainly released beforehand on limited edition vinyl only releases. Now In The Red has put together this compilation for everyone to enjoy. Mike Snipper and his Brooklyn crew create some of the best lo-fi dark and catchy pop to come out of the 2000’s yet. This is a must have for every music lover of our generation.

Au Revoir Simone
"Still Night, Still Light"
****
These girls from Brooklyn make some of the prettiest music out there today. Originally formed from just keyboards and vocals, the girls have come a long way. Now instead of just sounding like a band formed to play birthday, house parties, they craft beautiful orchestrated pop that fits perfectly in a Molly Ringwald world. Check out the single “Shadows” for the album highlight.

"Until The Earth"
**
Fans of The Tindersticks, The National and many other dark, slow, and prodding indie bands might like the Broken Records. Unfortunately I had a hard time really digging this album as it is a bit too slow to get into. But those of you with a ton of patience might want to check them out. There are a lot of interesting lyrics to the songs, but they just don’t have any energy to them to catch my attention.

Discovery
"LP"
****
What happens when one of the guys from Ra Ra Riot and one of the guys from Vampire Weekend come together to make their own band. Well it’s called Discovery and it sounds like a collision of the two bands’ sounds together discovering music on late night studio sessions. These indie bands have taken their pop sound and combined a good amount of electronics to the mix making them sound a bit more experimental and loose. The end result is a fun record to listen to for fans of both bands.

Screaming Females
"Power Move"
***
New Jersey underage stars give us their 3rd album to date and their best yet. On this new album you hear a bit of Dinosaur Jr.-esque inspired guitars, screeching female vocals, a bit of Led Zepplin, and a bit of grungey / punk bass riffs that remind you of Primus. Check out the single “Bell” for their catchiest number on the album.

"Miike Snow"
**
Miike Snow is a duo from Stockholm that make cheesey 80’s inspired pop that instantly makes you feel like you are in a Chromeo video. The only song on the album that really strikes any cool chord is the lead song “Animal”. It has got just enough of a fun catchy appeal to it that will salvage the band from obscurity. Check out some of the remixes that make the song even more fun.

"Battle For The Sun"
****
Placebo have been around since the early days of Britpop and continue to soldier on with great pop hits. I remember first getting into the band back in 1995 and unlike many bands still like them 14 years later. On this new album the band takes a poppy appeal than they have ever taken before. Check out the songs “Astray Heart” and “Battle for The Sun” for the album’s instant hits.

"Survival Strategies in a Modern World"
***
This all girl twee pop from Sweden came all the way over to play some shows in NY and we were lucky enough to catch their live set at Bruar Falls in Williamsburg. Although their live show didn’t make us go crazy their debut album gives out enough cool and catchy artpop that you can forgive them for their it. Check out the song “Roses In The Dark” for a terrific piece of C-86 style pop.

"Hombre Lobo 12 Songs Of Desire"
***
Yes the Eels are back and yes he still has got some new pop tricks up his sleeves. This time he has grown a new full beard that has inspired the songs on this new album. The songs contain a more laid back approach to them that makes you feel like you are still hanging out in sunny California. Check out “What’s A Fella Gotta Do” and “Beginner’sLuck” for the album’s highlights.

"Journal For Plague Lovers"
***
When Rickey Edwards, one of the key members of the band, disappeared in the mid 90’s the band and the world were devastated. They never truly knew what happened to him, but after 15 years of gone missing, his family decided to officially pronounce him dead. Before disappearing Rickey wrote a full album worth of material. But up until now the band kept these songs in secret. Now they are releasing them as they are an integral part of the Manic Street Preachers’ history. This is a true treat for all of their fans.

This new album from Bachelorette contains some of the most angelic and gorgeous pop songs that I have heard in a long time. "Farm"
*****
We like many other people fell in love with Dinosaur Jr. when they first came out with “Bug”. But then the album “Green Mind” came out and we got so addicted to the band that we couldn’t stop playing their music on repeat. So it is with great honor to have a new album by the band the that is still making great music that resembles what they did so well back in the 90’s. Fans of the old “Green Mind” album will instantly love songs like “I Want You To Know”. It has got the same dirty guitar fuzz sound that is ever so popular again today.

Kasabian
"West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum"
*****
Kasabian has come back and dropped the electronics this time to give us a more rock styled approach. Fans of Oasis will be super excited about this new album. Filled with 60’s psychedelic inspired songs like “Thick As Thieves” the band has taken a step back in time to dig up some new sounds. For their lead singles, they still incorporate some of their older harder edged rock sound to make the numbers super catchy. Check out the lead singers, “Vlad The Impaler” and “Fast Fuse”.

"City Center"
*****
This debut album is one of the coolest new releases that I have heard in a long time. This Brooklyn duo has conjured up one spirtualized sounding album full of experimental electronics that are at times soothing and then at times extremely trippy. It sounds as if the two of them have crammed all of the best sounds of the last 30 years into one album. All in all this is a great album that needs to be heard.

Alden Penner of the Unicorns and Brendan Reed of Arcade Fire have gotten together to form a new indie duo. This debut album won’t blow you away, but if you are a super fan then it’s worth checking out. It reminds me of an early 90’s sound that you could hear on a Superchunk album.

Grizzly Bear
"Veckatimest"
*****
Grizzly Bear’s third full length is one that shows them maturing well as musicians. These boys have taken their once lo-fi folky sound and made one hugely sounding epic pop record. The songs are stillslow, enchanting, and dreamy, but now contain a stronger pop edge than ever before. Just listen to the hit singles, "Two Weeks" and "Cheerleader". This is another victory for indie and one that artists everywhere will look up to for inspiration for years to come.

"The Mirror Explodes"
***
The Warlocks used to be such an exciting band that challenged your musical senses. Like BRMC, Spiritualized, and BJTM they make music that is sonicly spiritual. This new album has still got some great tunes on it but instead of challenging your senses, it soothes them with a dreamy shoegaze vibe that is simply lovely, which is a bit odd for this band.

****
This West Coast band have been releasing cool lofi skuzzy, guitar fuzz recordings for many years now. But it is now that they have stepped up the plate and made an album that also contains a bit of pop feel to their songs. Now you can actually sing along to their awesome tunes. This is definitely a great album to add to your record collection as this crew combine elements of 50’s girl doo-woop feel to this already great sound.

Eminem
"Relapse"
***
Eminem said he was gonna retire, but he couldn’t resist the urge to spit out more rhymes. His head must have been spinning with lyrical poetry. Dirty poetry that is. As this album is full of Marshall’s dirty mind. As a comeback album Eminem gives us some of his funnest skits yet, along with some great rhymes on songs “Old Time’s Sake” (featuring Dr. Dre) and “Crack A Bottle” (featuring 50 Cent and Dr. Dre). The only problem with the album is that it doesn’t contain one big dance hit that hip hop so needs now to make it fun and club friendly. All in all it is still good to her Eminem doing his thing again.

Mika Miko
"We Be XuXa"
***
LA’s underage Downtown punk scene is still going strong and Mika Miko prove it with this new release. Formed around the club, The Smell, the band takes on their own identity by playing music their way. Loud, bratty, messy, and carefree. This female fronted band draw strong comparisons to Bikini Kill and by listening to their shouty songs and guitar riffs it is easy to hear why.

Pterodactyl

****
Pterodactyl’s sound seems to change with each new record that they put out. But one thing that remains constant is the great quality of their songs. On this new album the band takes us on a pychedelic trip with freakout jam songs. The album sounds heavily influenced by 60’s psych, but manages to stay revelant by combing modern electronics and guitar sounds. This album is a modern groovy trip.

Tiga
"Ciao!"
***
Tiga’s new album doesn’t sound like that much of a far venture from his soothing and dance electro sound, and thank god for that. Because with such great songs like “Shoes” you don’t need for him to change what he is doing. “Shoes” will keep you dancing all night long to its sexy female vocals and smooth dance beat. Sometimes things work perfect just the way they are.

"Yours Truly, The Commuter"
****
Jason Lytle as some of you already know was the key person in Grandaddy. Grandaddy put out some of the coolest indie records that our generation was lucky to be a part of. Now that Grandaddy is no longer together, Jason has written his first solo record that, unsurprisingly, sounds like a Grandaddy record. Luckily it is a terrific album full of glorious pop songs that leave your cravings for that Grandaddy sound satisfied. The best song rests in the lead track “Yours Truly, The Commuter” with its instantly upbeat tempo and catchy chorus. It is good to hear that Jason is still hard at work in crafting create pop tunes.

If you are alive in this day and age you have to know how Pete Doherty is. Pete if you still don’t know is the lead singer of these two great British groups. This is his newest solo album produced by Stephen Street. Pete is the master at lofi bedroom style recordings that still contain enough depth to capture your heart.

"Art Brut vs. Satan"
***
Art Brut make great tunes. This is their third album from one of the UK’s best modern storytellers. Thee Oh Sees is John Drywr’s, original the lead singer of The Coachwhips, new band. This is their sophomore album and one that is way more poppy and excessible than The Coachwhips previous songs. ****
Graham is truly a talented musician and this solo album cements that fact. **
What ever happened to all of the energy that Paul, the lead singer, used to belt out in his songs. This album leaves all of his youthful energy at the door and instead gives us an album full of simple pop tunes that sound like Shed Seven b-sides. Golden Silvers
"True Romance"
***
Golden Silvers make fun, dance indie pop that takes on various musical shapes. At first they take an 80’s retro dance trip, then they venture on a psychedelic pop trip like MGMT, then lastly they venture off on a soft reggae vibe that got Vampire Weekend so much attention. If the band would focus more on the retro 80’s dance feel that they captured on the lead single “True Romance” they will be destined for great things. This lead single is an instant hit that you can sing and dance along to all day/night long.

The Maccabees make cool Brit-pop-rock, but unfortunately they don’t sound original enough or make any songs that standout enough to warrant any true celebrations. *****
Bat For Lashes is the genius of Natasha Khan and her crafty lyrics. This female singer knows how to charm your eyes and ears off with her soft, beautiful, and mystic music. You normally don’t hear about a ton of great music coming out of Boston. But Passion Pit are a rare circumstance. They’ve taken glitchy electronics, mixed it was pop and made some of the most fun songs that you can actually dance too. The highlights of this album are “Little Secrets”, “The Reeling”, and “Sleepyhead” which was on their debut EP. The Vaselines
"Enter The Vaselines"
*****
I first stumbled upon this band totally by accident. I had this Superchunk album that my friend desperately wanted. I wasn’t totally in love with it so I offered to trade it to him for something. He pulled out this album by The Vaselines and said, “here you can have this record. Its an wimpy indie band so you’ll love it.” And you know what, he was totally right. I listened to that album like 200 times and totally totally loved it. I still love it. Back then it was limited so it was hard to find, but now you can get the same album along with 36 other tracks total, 3 lp/cd collection. But the old original songs still sound the best. Classics like “You Think You’re A Man”, “Son Of A Gun”, and “Monsterpussy” sound just as fresh and prevalent as they did back in the early 90’s.

"Outside Love"
****
The Pink Mountaintops is the solo project from that band that everyone loves, called Black Mountain. Yeah you remember them. They put out cool hillbilly, country, folk, pop that people have been enjoying for the past 5 to 6 years now. But with this band, he gets to experiment a bit more with their tender and spacey side. Just listen to the lead song “Outside Love”. It sounds like a mixture between Spiritualized and Bon Iver. It is slow, spaced out and totally lovely. But the real highlight comes with “The Gayest of Sunbeams” for its euphoric anthems and up tempo beats.

This duo from San Diego has one of the coolest live shows that any duo can possible pull off. Their Jesus and Mary Chain inspired tunes are a ton of fun with an added garage rock flavor and a ton of fuzzed out guitars. This is the debut album from Sacramento’s own lo-fi art-poppers.
Listening to the instantly catchy song “Hair” makes me feel like this band could of existed back in the late 80’s indie twee pop era, except that their lofi twee–ness has too much of a modern twist on the equation to classify them as just another retro band. There is something special inside this album that is just aching to come out. And is simply a matter of you taking the time to listen to these songs to discover what that is.

The early 90’s had a massive influence on what young bands are now doing in Brooklyn and you can clearly hear it in all of their albums. Drink Up Buttercup
"Farewell Captain/Sosey and Dosey"
*****
Philadelphia’s Drink Up Buttercup's debut US single showcases their Beatles meets tin-pan alley, carnival soundtracking. They got tons more tunes in the can and are currently working on their debut album, but until they finish their full length album they have given us this delicious two song 7” and digital single with their already crowd favorites “Farewell Captain” and “Sosey and Dosey”.
The 7 inch single is colored red vinyl and comes with mp3 download code. The band is already a favorite of Stereogum and soon to be yours.

Super Furry Animals
"Dark Days / Light Years"
***
The Welsh crew are back with another new release of crazy pscyh pop. These boys are totally dependable to give us great new tunes. This album contains a bit more slower tunes than they normally give us, but these trippy songs are still super cool. Listen to “Where Do You Wanna Go?” and you’ll see how cool these boys still are.

Gliss
"Devotion Implosion"
****
Gliss’s new album brings us more of what we love, a 90’s retro shoegaze indie sound that is super upbeat and topped with lush vocals. With an album full of love songs and bits of electronica thrown in you can easily fall for this band. Fans of Lush, Smashing Pumpkins will enjoy these top album singles “Morning Light” and “29 Act Of Love”.

Talk Normal
"Secret Cog"
****
Brooklyn’s own Andrya Ambro and Sarah Register are keeping art punk alive and well with this five song debut EP. Each song is a fun, noisey, and simple angular punk number that borders on highly experimental while still maintaining a catchy presence. Keep an ear out for these girls cause if this EP is anything to go by, you’ll be hearing a lot more from them.

The Coathangers
"Scramble"
****
Atlanta, GA likes to keep the party going all year round. And The Coathangers make it easy to join in on the fun. This group of girls is taking elements of punk, 60’s doowoop, and experimental noise to make a sound that makes you just want to party on down. With their snappy, shoutty, and silly lyrics you you’ll want to grab your PBR and party on in your converse.

Dan Deacon
"Bromst"
***
Everyone is always freaking out over this one man musical machine. He makes super fun, arty, and hyper laptop music that is tons of fun to party down to. The other problem is that this new album doesn’t capture as much energy as his debut album did. But regardless of his recordings it is still truly amazing how Dan Deacon knows how to get the crowd going.

"The Good Feeling Muic Of"
****
Folk music is never going to go away. It is just going to continue to take on new shapes and forms as the years go by and youngsters mix multiple musical forms. With that in mind this folky should not be overlooked as his album gives us some of the sweetest twee folk/pop that you can also sing along to. Fans of Ariel Pink should take note.

Doves
"Kingdom of Dust"
****
Doves fourth album is an epic beauty and one well worth waiting for. Manchester’s best sonic band has one of the most uplifting albums of the year. Full of beautifully crafted songs that will continue to sound fresh in your head for years to come. Make sure you also get the singles as they are full of terrific hidden gems that we call b-sides.

The Rakes
"Klang"
***
This third album by UK’s skinniest indie boys is a bit of a disappointment. Their debut album had all the perfect dance rock tunes to keep you up all night long, but this album seems to be lacking in that category. The only half descent song seems to be “That’s The Reason”. Maybe the band has matured too much to continue to make the same fun dance style pop, but this slower version doesn’t satisfy us as well. For fans of Maximo Park, Franz Ferdinand, and The Futureheads.

"Interceptions"
****
Husband and wife duo Jake & Kim Reid give us their debut full length album filled with heavy electronic shoegaze that will make your head spin. Their dark 90’s sound borders on a strong love of bands like Curve, Suicide, JAMC, and My Bloody Valentine. With overly load guitars and sonic pedals you can tell that their past experience playing in the bands Alician Blue, Skywave, and Ceremony has rubbed off on their present sound. This is an excellent album to listen to on your headphones as the sound seems to travel around in your head throughout each song.

Silversun Pickups
"Swoon"
***
Finally Silversun Pickups have given us their sophomore album. Their debut album blew us away with their strong love of early Smashing Pumpkins and 90’s guitar rock. The only problem with this new album is that they gave us too much of a familiar sound to their debut album. Don’t get me wrong this is another good album, but it would be a lot more exciting if they mixed their sound up a bit. Listen to “Panic Switch” and “Soft Of” first.

"“Wolfgang Amadeus”"
****
Everyone loves this French band. They make indie fun all over again like it was 1999 and with great songs like “Liztomania” and “1901” you can easily see why. There songs are light, poppy, dancey, and instantly fun. This is an album definitely worth checking out.

Kurt Vile
"Constant Hitmaker"
****
Kurt Vile is truly a modern folk genius. He simply knows how to capture time and turn his lyrics into musical poetry very simply with his lo-fi recordings. “Constant Hitmaker” is by far his best record out of all three that we have managed to collect so far. Listening to “Freeway” makes you feel like you’re free as a bird sailing along the road side with the top down with no worries in the world. Expect a ton more from this guy as each record is a fabulous treasure.

Chain And The Gang
"Down With Liberty…Up With Chains"
***
Ian Svenonius, formerly of Weird War and The Make Up, is now back with a new band that personifies his love of old soul and R&B. On this new record Ian portrays an artist locked up in jail and what he does with the time left that he has inside. Not only do you get some great bluesy swamp rock tunes with the songs “Chain Gang Theme” and “Unpronounceable Name”, but you also get some hearfelt stories in the form of an interview with him on the inside. It is good to hear that Ian still has a strong creative side within his music.

Fever Ray
"Fever Ray"
****
It makes me wonder why they needed to make this a solo album by one half of The Knife, as it basically sounds just like a Knife album. It is just a bit slower and darker. Whatever the reason may be it doesn’t really matter as this album is terrific. There is no instant hit on here, but as a whole it is one terrific album to listen to. Filled with dark and spooky electronics you’ll be excited to hear this art school girl’s new sounds.

The Antlers
"Hospice"
****
The Antlers is a huge surprise to us, as it turns out the singer was an intern for Kanine Records that we really liked. Ian is a super nice youngster that is still in college why also recording his own solo music. But after tiring of playing solo he formed a full band and started playing around the Brooklyn area. His debut full-length album is one that he wrote about his girlfriend that has been battling cancer for years now. She is constantly in and out of hospitals and bed ridden. Ian’s lyrics are super heart ridden and sad as he sings about watching his lover in and out of pain. The album tends to remind us of a bit like Grizzly Bear with its atmospheric tendencies and soft lyrical whispers. With a ton of hype of this super strong album you be seeing The Antlers get a formal release soon. But for those that can’t wait buy the album now directly from the band.

****
TSOOL continue to make great records with each new release. This is the kind of band that you can depend on to always supply a familiar and fun rock sound. The Von Bondies
"Love Hate And Then Theres You"
**
When The Von Bondies first came out with their debut album on Sympathy For The Record Industry we totally feel in love with their rare garage rock sound. They were shouty, fun, youthful, and raw. But now they have stripped all of their interesting traits that we loved and given us a simple and straight up rock sound that borders on the cheesy side. But if you get past all that and listen carefully to “This Is Our Perfect Crime”, Pale Bride” and “21st Birthday” you’ll find yourself humming along to these tunes.

The Whitest Boy Alive
"Rules"
***
This is the sophomore album from ½ of Kings Of Convience. Unfortunately the first album was a lot better as it contained a bit more upbeat songs. Trying to combine a strong disco flavor to twee pop really only works when the songs get you dancing. This is still a cool album, but the majority of the songs are just too slow for what it feels like they are trying to achieve. Listen to “Dead End” and “Courage” first for the albums highlights.

Tamaryn
"Led Astray Washed Ashore"
****
Tamaryn makes very cool new wave music from the dark echobellys of New York and San Francisco. She is an extreme beauty that has conjured the spirit of Sioux Sixx and made it more modern. “Return To Surrender” even takes this beauty’s vocals to the dance floor in the form of a love song that could of easily appeared on the soundtrack of Sixteen Candles. It is truly an echanting song of elegance and love. It is simply just one beautiful song.

Sin Fang Bous is the solo project by Sindri from Iceland. Fans of Mum will totally love his glitchy electronic pop. Sindri contains a strong folk edge hidden underneath all of his electronic samples that is truly beautiful. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"It's Blitz!"
*****
Finally the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back. And what an amazing return to form they have given us. This album takes on a more mainstream and dancy feel than anything that they have done before. It is a lot more simple and catchy, but the songs are so much fun with anthem style vibe that you can’t help but love them. Already the first single “Zero” is an instant hit with its melancholy 1990’s sound. It is when you get to song two that the album starts to really soar and you hear the new dancefloor hit of 2009. This song will be played at every bar and club around the world. Well at least it will till the end of this year. And that is a great thing in today’s short attention span.

I.U.D.
"The Proper Sex"
**
For those of you that love traditional pop music stay far away from I.U.D.’s debut album, because this female duo forgot the normal formation of a pop song. Instead they have chosen to make an album full of left-field, arty, noise, experimental songs. With one of the members being a key musician in Gang Gang Dance you can easily understand why. Check out “Daddy” and “Girls Just Wanna” for the album highlights.

We love love love The Thermals and with each new release it is super easy to hear why. Check out “Now We Can See” first as this song instantly stands out due to its catchy chorus. Thermals!

Cryptacize
"Mythomania"
***
Sweet, tender, and precious, Cryptacize make music that is eas to cherish. Their songs are soft, delicate, and beautiful gems that will warm your heart. Once you listen to “New Spell” you’ll smirk in delight. Then “Blue Tears” will come on and you’ll truly fall in love with this twee, psych pop song. Cryptacize could instantly be the face of the indie twee world along with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

The Horrors
"Primary Colours"
***
Gone is the garage stomping flavor that The Horrors displayed so well for their love of the 60’s bands like The Sonics. Now they have taken on a lo-fi new-wave approach that doesn’t seem as exciting, but it still garnishing them a bit of attention with “Scarlet Fields” terrific take on an old lost song of C86 dark twee pop.

PJ Harvey & John Parish
"A Woman A Man Walked By"
***
We aren’t big fans of John Parish, but anything that PJ Harvey touches is good to us. So it is always exciting to hear what she has next. Her voice is like a twisted angel in waiting. “Black Hearted Love” is the top song on this album with its deep hearted and soulful vocals. The rest of the album tends to be a bit too slow to create mass excitement, but still contains some beautiful songs for those of you with a good attention span.

"Fist of God"
***
This Canadian duo is back with another album to get you on the dance floor. And with the hit single “Bounce” it is easy to do so. This is not their best album to date, but still contains some fun jams to party down to.

Vampire Hands
"E.P.S."
***
The Midwest isn’t usually known for producing top bands, but there are occasions when you get a nice surprise. Vampire Hands give us that nice surprise with the terrifice pop single “Greasy Hair”. Wavves
"Wavvves"
*****
Wavves has created one of the coolest solo albums of 2009 that sounds like a full band is playing out in a club. Nathan creates his fuzzed out 1990’s influenced guitar all in his bedroom yet his music has caused so much fuss that he has been summoned to that stage in such high demand that he has inlisted a full band to play live. Fans of Dinosaur Jr. will be super excited to hear Nathan’s music. Check out “To The Dregs”, “So Bored”, “California Goths”, and “Beach Demon” first for the album highlights.

"Junior"
***
Royksopp has given us another album full of dance floor pleasure. On this album they enlist some cool guest singers including; Lykke Li, Robyn, Karin, and Anneli. This album won’t blow your mind, but it does contain enough of a fun edge to keep you entertained.

"The Floodlight Collective"
***
This is the debut solo album from Lockett Pundt, who also plays in the Atlanta band, Deerhunter. You can hear a similar musical style to Deerhunter here on the album. Topped with a heavy psych rock feel, the album takes on a highly experimental feel that is way tripped out, spacey and fun to listen to. It’s the perfect kind of music to listen to while relaxing and letting your mind wonder.

Jessie Evans
"Is It Fire?"
****
Jessie Evans is truly a musical genius. Having released numerous records on various hip indie labels like; Cochon Records, Troubleman Unlimited, and GSL she also fronted some of the most avant guard groups including; The Vanishing, Autonervous, and Subtonix. After relocating to Berlin, she has taken her love of no-wave and afro-beat and added a world music flavor to the mix. This is her debut solo album that brings a wide variety of musical loves to the mix. Recording in Mexico you can hear her strong Latin beat influence topped by her strong pop lyrics. The songs feature live drums and percussion by Toby Dammit (Iggy Pop, Swans) and guest musicians Budgie (The Creatures, Siouxsie and The Banshees), Martin Wenk (Calexico), and Namosh. Recorded in part by Thomas Stern (Einstürzenden Neubauten, Crime and The City Solution) and mixed/ co-produced in Tijuana by Pepe Mogt (Nortec Collective). ***
Miss Kitten first came out early 2000 with an icy cool electro sound that helps champion the early electroclash scene. But now that that sound is gone she has come back with a new approach to dance music. Holiday For Strings
"Two Of You"
*****
What happens when you put five Sweden guys together with a strong love of dance, experimental, and pop music? The answer is simple, you get an amazing single called "Two Of You. Its dark, atmospheric, yet dancey vibe set a perfect mood for a dark and arty dance floor. Holiday For Strings consists of John, from Peter, Bjorn, and John, Pontus, from Theives Like Us, along with Magnus, Erik, and Oscar, all from other previous Swedish bands. This is their debut EP for Kanine Records and one that comes in the form of a limited edition double gatefold 7"/digital release. Backed by two other dark and atmospheric songs "Light Years Ahead" and "Love" you get the feeling that the boys have been listening to a lot of Can records. Yet they also tell me that they are highly influenced by the new Italio Disco scene sprouting out in the French clubs. Toxic Avenger also adds a bouncing electro remix of the main song for added dance floor pleasure. Be on the lookout for this band as this song is too good to keep hidden for long.

"Songs Of Shame"
****
Woods have been playing the DIY scene around Brooklyn for a couple of years now and have released a lot of albums on hip DIY labels like Woodsist. This even band features members of various bands like Meneguar. But it wasn’t until this album that they truly caught our eye/ear. Songs like “Rain On” take on a super catchy tweeness that instantly makes your ears fall in love. The Vandelles
"Del Black Aloha"
*****
The Vandelles new album is twelve songs of sonic guitar fuzz with a swinging Beach Boys flavor. These four Brooklynites have been cool shoegaze inspired rock for the past couple of years now, that has become a huge favorite among us here at Crashin’ In and many local NYer’s. Their dreamy songs make you feel like you are on a sunny beach in the 1950’s while hanging with a crew of surf buddies and swinging gals. This band loves heavy effects pedals and while you can hear it within each song, the songs contain a strong pop vocal sense that makes them easy to singalong to. Fans of A Place To Bury Strangers, JAMC, and The Beach Boys will enjoy this album. It’s a real treat.

"Fantasies"
****
Pretty much every indie kid nows about this Canadian band. They had the great hit “Monster Hospital”. Remember the great MSKRFT remix that was done with this song. It instantly became an indie dance floor hit. Well this album contains that same feel with the album’s best song “Gold Guns Girls”. This is by far the album’s best song with “Gimme Sympathy” following in it’s footsteps very closely. All in all it is good to have Metric back making fun music that we can dance and fall in love to with.

***
You would never believe that this is The Datsuns’s fourth record. We first feel in love with The Datsuns when they gave us the super catchy and rhythmic song “Harmonic Generator”. This song was laden in 70’s classic rock that contained such an amazing stomping beat that you had to have it. "Baby Don't Cry"
****
Blue Jungle has made garage rock fun again. But this isn’t just another normal garage band. This two girl, two boy band combine doo-wop vocals with lo-fi recordings on this debut album. "Tentacles"
****
“Tentacles” is Crystal Antlers debut full length album and one that doesn’t disappoint. Within this album they fill our need for everything punk, prog, screamy, experimental, apocalyptic, and a bit pop all in one. Their use of soaring and scrachy vocals creates a new and fun sound for the punk world. But these are not your average punks. These California boys grew up on the beach and still reside in their native Long Beach surroundings. They may have a punk spirit, but you will never meet a group of more polite and sophisticated characters that love the simply things in life, like the enjoyment of people’s company or the love of music. And their love of music shines well within this album.

Telepathe
"Dance Mother"
***
We’ve always loved Telepathe. They even played two of our parties once and are tons of fun live. This female duo put a huge challenge on their shoulders by combining electronic, hip hop, indie, and experimental samples together to make a mystifying, atmospheric, and dancy sound. At times it comes off so amazingly well that you can’t stop listening to their songs. Take the lead songs off of this debut album for example;
“So Fine” and “Chrome’s On It”. Both of them hit as amazing examples of Telepathe’s genius. The other songs on the album seem to take one a more slow and chilled out atmospheric sound that is more meant for relaxing in your room as your mind expands with the music.

"Suckers"
****
We thought you just might like to hear the new Suckers EP as I know we have been excitedly awaiting for it. These songs were produced by the one of their buddies in Yeasayer, Anand Wilder. Unfortunately its only four songs and sounds a bit more mainstream compared to their previous demo recordings. But to everyone’s excitement, they are pretty damn good. All of the songs are extremely catchy while still maintaining a bit of atmospheric artiness to them. Song #2 “Afterthoughts & TV “ sounds a lot like Band Of Horses to, while song #3 "Easy Chairs" is by far the best song on the EP. Just check out the chorus on it. And song #4 "It Get's Your Body Moving" is a mind blowing anthem. People will be singing this song all across the Atlantic. We've seen these boys play live like ten times with friends, Chairlift, but have never heard the songs in this form so well documented. It’s a thrill to hear Quinn Walker, Austin Fisher, Pan and Brian Aiken making such great recordings.

Lily Allen
"It's Not Me It's You"
****
Lily Allen truly is pop star. But unlike many other pop stars she actually writes her own lyrics. And that is a good thing as her clear lyrics make for a good time. Anytime that you want something silly, fun, and dancey to listen to you can pop on "The Fear" or "Back To Start" and you'll instantly be in a good mood. So this pop star still has a lot to say and her new album reflects just that.

These Are Powers
"All Aboard Future"
*****
This far-out collective has created a more advanced album then we could have ever imagined. Their left field thinking has helped them make one of the coolest albums to ever come out of Brooklyn. They’ve put together an album that brings to mind comparisons to Brooklyn’s other greats, Liars, Gang Gang Dance, and Animal Collective. They have managed to make such high experimental and original songs while still maintaining a strong pop edge to music. This is an album that you’ll be listening to on repeat for years to come.

Beirut
"March of The Zapotec and Realpeople Holland"
****
Beirut’s new album is a beautifully landscaped piece. On this new album you can hear his traditional use of instruments from all around Europe to make a worldly sound. The difference this time is that Beirut adds an indie dance edge to his music making it a bit more excessible and poppy. The album reminds me of something you would expect from Magnetic Fields. Light, airy, and poppy topped with a ton of quirky lyrics. In other words, perfect for any indie kid.

The Hunches
"Exit Dreams"
***
Portland, Oregon’s finest skuzzy, fuzzed, garage rockers are back with another album full of music that you’d expect to hear out of them. It’s dirty, raw, swampy garage rock that sounds like it was recorded in a basement somewhere with blown out speakers and amps.

Karen O, Spank Rock, Chuck D, David Byrne, RZA, Amanda Blank, Sizzla, and tons more have come together to put together one of funnest albums of 2009. Limbs is a group of Brooklyn youngsters obsessed with 1990's indie rock. Think Sebadoh and Superchunk and you are right on track. For the highlight of the album check out the song "Whitewash" for its energetic guitar and thumping rhythms.

Winter Gloves
"About A Girl"

Canada loves their indie bands. Especially those that sing melodic pop songs with a dancy edge. Winter Gloves make exactly what their public wants with their indie bible in their hand. This album sounds as if it could of been created by any member of Death Cab For Cutie.

Duels
"The Barbarians Move In"
***
Duels have made a very dark and rough record that sounds like a mix between Radiohead “The Bends” area mixed with a dark and sinister edge of The Divine Comedy. The only problem is that it lacks a lot of originality. In fact if it wasn’t for “Regeneration” the album would feel like a failure, but this song saves it from falling flat.

"Fruit"
****
Because this band was on an Ipod commerical you want to hate it like many other bands that get a lucky break, but upon listening to the full album you find yourself really loving their cheesy pop songs. "Watersports"
****
We got the chance to see this band at Cake Shop the other week and were totally blown away with how great they were. They instantly reminded me of the Liars during the period of their first record. Raw, full of rhythm, and tons tons tons of energy. It was totally exciting to see and hear a band doing this sound still. And doing it so well that you can't help but dance around in excitement. This debut album reflects all of their live energy and excitement so well that you will forget that you never got the chance to see this San Fran band live before.

"The Future Will Come"
****
By now many of you know who Juan Maclean is. He is one dance orchestra that has a strong love for instrumentation and rhythm. This is his sophomore album accompanied by his bandmate, Nancy W., where they take us on a night out in Ibiza. Juan Maclean wants to make you dance your worries away and he succeeds in doing so with great songs like "The Simple Life", "No Time" and "Happy House". This is the record that you need to listen to right before going out on a Friday night.

Sky Larkin
"The Golden Spike"
***
This three-piece from the UK love their youth and you can hear their enthusiasm loud and clear in their songs. With a strong punk pop flavor similar to bands like Sleater Kinney and The Thermals, Sky Larkin are making youthful art-pop that is simply fun to bounce around to. They might not be breaking the mold, but their songs are so much fun that you'll always enjoy a listen.

"Witch Bitch"
***
The sophomore album by this Scottish group is not as catchy and spell binding as their debut album. There is no "Same Jeans" song on here to jump around to, but the band still has managed to write some fun songs. They just take a bit longer to warm up to compared to their previous work. Check out "One Off Pretender" for its rocking beat and sing-along chorus.

Spider and the Flies
"Something Clockwork This Way Comes"
****
This album is a side project from two of the members of The Horrors. Its simply an instrumental mindtrip. The duo set us back to a 1965 recording studio where they spend long evenings jamming out on Moog synths and various other keyboards and samplers creating a groove and spooky mood. Some of the songs even have a dance edge to them for those of you that enjoy the obscure number.

Morrissey
"Years of Refusal"
****
You might think that after all of these years Moz might run out of things to say, but as each year rolls by, he continues to surprise us with his clear wit. This new album takes a massive leap forward in his career, where most people would start to make mellow records, Moz takes it up a notch by turning it up a tempo from the last album. Listening to "That's How People Grow Up" instantly reminds me of songs from "Your Arsenal". Each song is highly satarical with a loud boost to romp around to. So judging by this album, there is no slowing down for Moz and thank goodness as he still has a ton important things to say to us all.

Asobi Seksu
"Hush"
*****
Asobi Seksu has always been a favorite of ours since 2000, when they used to be called Sportfuck, so it is great to see that they are still doing so well. This is the third full length and one that has us with our jaws down to the ground in excitement. This album is even more lush, poppy, and beautiful than anything that they have ever done. The band even signs some songs in English making it a real treat for us to finally be able to understand their sweet vocals. On this album we get a taste of what it must have been like to hear the Cocteau Twins during their day. Check out the songs “Gliss” and “Sunshower” first as they seem to sparkle out more than the others.

Faunts
"Feel.Love.Thinking.Of"
****
You gotta love a label that finds something as special as this band. Friendly Fire truly has worked hard to find this real treat. This Canadian band makes music that takes on many forms. You can hear traces of electronic, pop, indie, shoegaze, and twee all wrapped in one song. Think Death Cab For Cutie. “Check out these two songs first as they even contain a bit of dancability to them that reminds me of Junior Boys; “Out On A Limb” and “IT Hurts All The Time”. Keep an ear out for Faunts as they will slowly creep up on you when you least expect it.

This UK debut album is one that truly breathes a youthful spirit. Its catchy pop/punk captures what is we all loved about being young. Having a good time and knowing it makes it ok to pull out a couple silly jams along the way. But when they are this much fun, you simply don’t care.

We all loved Johnny and his last album when he gave us that great song about America. But now he has gone too far and created an over indulgent album full of boring and slow songs. The Prodigy
"Invaders Must Die"
***
Everyone kid in the world has had at least one prodigy album in their music collection. I mean everyone knows their hit song, “Firestarter”. You have had to, because the band has more gold records than almost any other electronic dance band out there. So it is no surprise that the band is continuing on with putting out heavy electronic dance records in the same vain of “Firestarter”. “Invaders Must Die” seems to take that spirit and speed up the BPMs even more. The band refuses to take a breather when it comes to getting you up on the dance floor throughout the whole record. So expect crowds all over to continuing to mosh to The Prodigy.

"The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart"
*****
This album is a real treat for fans of old Sarah Records. Their twee pop sound fits perfectly along any records by The Pastels, Heavenly, or The Field Mice. Kip and Peggy’s sweet vocals give off such a warm feeling that you instantly feel all fuzzy and giddy inside. Adorned with an 80's indie stylized artwork this release truly will enlighten your record collection and help win over any of your cardigan wearing friends. Over the past year, we’ve watched them play multiple shows, some with Chairlift, and it is truly amazing to see how far they have progressed as songwriters and musicians in such a short amount of time. The four of them have written an album full of song that are 100% timeless.

*****
This band has been playing around Brooklyn for a few years now and has finally released their debut album. And what a treat this is. Check out the single “New Horizon”. If you don’t like this, then you must not have any musical taste. This mystic, psych rock band takes you back to old days of Pink Floyd while also sounding a bit renaissance sounding. Psychic Ills started out making cool music that sounded like early Spacemen 3, but as the years have progressed, so has the band’s music. On this release the band takes on a total freak-out acid trip by giving us mostly all instrumental psych jams that are definitely far out there yet still super exciting to listen to.

This is the third album by these Swedish folk guys that love to write great pop songs. Emil Svanangen is the lead frontman and mastermind behind this outfit. Antony & The Johnsons
"The Crying Light"
**
You either totally love Antony or hate him. There really is no in between with this guy. He has the most challenging vocal style that you will here out there today. Unfortunately we fall closer to the hate side as his vocal style is a bit too whiney and irritating for us. But we do like the way he brings an opera-esq element to his slow and carnival like act. For a truly amazing vocal take from Antony check out “Blind” where he guest sings with Hercules and Love Affair, bringing in his love for 70’s disco.

America loves good ole’ rock n’ roll bands. But it would be nice if they could also be a bit more interesting, so that they add something new to the flavor. This 9-song mini album is a majestic masterpiece from this Brooklyn artist collective. Taking roots from Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, Luke Temple created a psychedelic pop album full of delights. At the head of it all is the self titled song “Tunnelvision” which leads us down a mystic trip of musical wonderment. This is the second album from Brooklyn’s favorite DIY duo. Matt and Kim have a massive following due to their intensively fun and high energy show. This is a 60’s style garage-pop done professionally well. And as Ludella Black was originally in The Del-Monas and Headcoatee, along with her friends Holly Golightly, Kyra Rubella and ‘Bongo’ Debbie, it is easy to hear why. Hatcham Social is a group of youngsters from London that make dancey twee-pop that favors an early 90’s sound. Anyone remember Edywn Collin’s old band, Orange Juice? "Submarine Races"
**
Unfortunately I have to admit that this album is somewhat of a bit of disappointment. This Chicago band is a bit too straight up pop/punk that it is not that intriguing or original sounding. Marnie Stern is one of the coolest experimental, noise, pop artists to come out of Brooklyn in a long time. This is her second album on Kill Rock Stars and one that is well worth all of the attention that she has been getting. In the beginning you could often catch her playing loft/warehouse DIY parties all across Brooklyn, but now that she has advanced onto playing actual real venues her music has progressed even more. "Desolation Town"
**
The Secret History is a project formed by Michael Grace Jr., who was previously in the band My Favorite, and Lisa Ronson, daughter of Mick Ronson, who was Bowie’s guitarist. For those that miss the sounds of the Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, and Silversun Pickups you are totally gonna love this band. They bring the essence of early 90’s guitar rock to the forefront while still making music that sounds fresh and new. Bloc Party
"Intimacy"
****
Bloc Party are back and this time with a huge bang. Forget thieir sophomore album, this album takes the band back to their roots with great indie dance hits like “Mercury” and “Talons”. On these songs the band is aiming for the dance floor by adding some more electronic elements to their soppy lyrics to give the songs that extra added punch. But for those of you that like their more mellow side of music, they give us a good mix of softer, mellow tempo songs as well. All in all it is good to hear that Bloc Party are back and have still got the goods.

****
Lo-fi has become the new punk. Wavves is the brainchild of one San Diego brainchild that loves punk and skateboarding. Like many bands from The Smell scene he creates music that has lo-fi recordings with a strong punk ethic. Each song is highly original and fun, with a skuzzy, fuzzy guitar sound that harks back to a love of early 90’s guitar bands like Dinosaur Jr. The best part is that he records all of his music in his own home studio. His songs draw strong comparisons to Ariel Pink in that he records in a mysterious and enchanting manner, thus making his songs full of pyschedelic wonder.

A.H. Kraken
"A.H. Kraken"
***
This German punk band makes skuzzy, fuzzed out punk rock that fits perfectly with In The Red’s rooster. Most of the songs are challenging affairs where you can’t understand what they are saying, incredibly noisy, jacked up to 100 miles per hour, yet sonically exciting. A. H. Kraken is taking punk in a new direction by making music challenging and exhilarating.

The Streets
"Everything Is Borrowed"
***
This is the final album from Mike Skinner. Yes that is true, Mike Skinner has decided to call it quits for his band, The Streets, and start working on other projects (films). But before he leaves he has given us one last album full of British rhymes to remember him by. Unfortunately this album doesn’t do him justice compared to his earlier work as it doesn’t contain a big hit single, but at least it gives us a golden memory of the genius of his lyrics and song.

School Of Seven Bells
"Alpinisms"
*****
Does the world really need another shoegaze influenced band? Well he answer is yes. Especially when it sounds this good. After Benjamin Curtis left his best friends in Secret Machines and On!Air!Library disbanded sisters, Alejandra and Claudia Dehez, joined Ben to make this glorious album. Each song sounds like a beautiful lullaby that fans of The Cocteau Twins or Slowdive will love. This is truly one beautiful album.

Hank IV
"Refuge In Genre"
****
Hank IV are dirty, scuzzy, punk rock from San Francisco that just sounds terrific on vinyl. Like many other of the Silt Breeze releases these recordings are a bit lo-fi, yet the band has so much energy that they give off an early Dischord sound. This is by far one of the most fun records that I have listened to all month.

Japanther
"Tut Tut Now Shake Ya Butt"
***
Following in the tradition of The Fall, Brooklyn's own legendary lo-fi punks continue to give us numerous amounts of releases. With each new album you can expect the unexpected from Japanther, except you always can be safe in the fact of knowing that each album is recorded in the same lo-fi manner. With using an experimental approach to the original punk sound the band has gained a solid following across the U.S. DIY music scene. Check out the song "Bump'n Rap Tapes" for a real energized punk number.

Lake
"Oh, The Places We'll Go"
****
Lake is the type of band that should be on K Records. Their twee-pop indie sound fits perfectly with K's catalog. Sweet female vocals bring back the sound that labels like Heavenly, Sarah, Slumberland, and Kindercore Records produced so well. Each song is light and airy indie pop delight. Thank you K for continuing this great indie sound.

Au
"Verbs"
****
Au make some super fun, tripped out, psychedelic music that fans of Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, and Liquid Liquid should check out. Each song takes on its own personality by varying on the mellow to more upbeat dance vibe. This is the type of album that would be great to listen to while driving through a hilly countryside of relaxing on your bed to.

Yo Majesty
"Futuristically Speaking Never Be Afraid"
**
When we first heard about Yo Majesty we got super excited. The idea of a great band coming out of Florida gave us all hope. Being as many of us used to live in Florida we know how hard it is to break out of there. But upon hearing their songs, we were instantly disappointed. These female, Christian, lesbian rappers lack the beats and rhymes to get us excited and with hip hop you need the beats in order to make songs exciting. Maybe the next album will be better.

Chad Vangaalen
"Soft Airplane"
****
Chad Vangaalen's debut album didn't impress us, but this sophomore debut has simply made us fall in love with Chad. On this new album he takes on a weirder and more tripped out approach to songwriting. The album gives off a more psychedelic feel to his folky songs making them all more of an interesting listen. This is a massive creative improvement for Chad and we honor it. Fans of Grizzly Bear will enjoy this album. The best part about Chad is that we learned he is a fellow skateboarder.

Wild Beasts
"Limbo Panto"
***
Wild Beasts is the type of band that is loved by music critics and misunderstood by normal people as they tend to make highly creative and challenging music. They sing in high falsettos like a children's church choir or Italian opera house. Fans of Antony and The Johnsons will get and love this band. Others might find it a bit to strange sounding, but if you take the time to truly give it a listen to hear it's real genius.

Adele
"19"
***
Adele has the voice of an angle and you can hear it on the hit single "Chasing Pavements". This female singer/songwriter knows how to write a tune that everyone can love. Hockey
"Mind Chaos"
***
This is the debut self-released album from one of CMJ's most hyped about bands of 2008. This Portland, Oregon group have given us nine songs that take on a variety of range. It seems that The Strokes, The Killers, and Gang Of Four have all had a positive influence on these youngsters. The best song resides first with "Too Fake" as it gives us a good indie dance floor feel that any dj could play out well. With a debut album this hyped up, be on the lookout for more from these West Coast guys.

NODZZZ
"NODZZZ"
****
These California slacker punks give us their debut full length after the terrific release of "I Don’t Wanna (Smoke Marijuana)" 7" This single excited me so much that I couldn't wait for their full length. I haven't heard anything as exciting within this slacker/punk influenced vibe since Pavement ruled the indie charts. But now NODZZZ have come to try and reclaim that thrown. This album is cool, but doesn't have a solid hit as their debut 7" had. Each song is slow and tripped and give a feeling like I'm listening to old Dead Milkmen records.

Little Joy
"Little Joy"
***
It has been a long time since The Strokes gave us another album. But while they are on hiatus, some of the band members have been working on other projects. Little Joy is a band that Fabrizio Moretti made with many other friends while living in sunny Los Angeles. You can hear the warm temperature's influence in each song with its happy go lucky beach boys inspired sound topped with an added touch of reggae. Can anyone say UB40? The album is not as great as we would expect from a member of The Strokes, but one that can still find a warm place in your heart.

Selfish Cunt
"English Chamber Music"
****
A couple years ago Selfish Cunt came onto the scene when Martin Tomlinson took it upon himself to make an art influenced one man electro/punk band. He had tons to say, but just didn't have the rhythm and music intensity to make his debut album rememberable. But now that he has a full band behind him, his sophomore album is a real triumph. Each song sounds like a punked version of The Fall. This is an album that you'll want to listen to over and over again as each song is filled with so much excited that they demand your attention.

Love Is All
"A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night"
***
When Love Is All first came out with their debut album, hipsters from all over were super excited about this Swedish band. Their scratchy and arty indie dance songs were a relief of fresh air to hear. Each song sounded like an instant hit and it felt almost impossible to pick out only one song from the album as the hit single. But with that debut album the band had 5 years to perfect their songs on it. After a couple world tours and having some children, the band has finally given us their sophomore album. This is one that is still really good, but unfortunately doesn't pack as much of a punch as their debut album as it doesn't contain the same sense of urgency and excitement in the songs. All in all it is still a great indie album, but really only an indie album.

Crystal Stilts
"Alight Of Night"
*****
This Brooklyn band makes me proud to say that I live in this neighborhood. People are once again saying that NYC is on top with the best bands in the world. And well they are right. You can go out almost any night of the week and see a rad band. But if you are really lucky you will catch a live set by Crystal Stilts at Cake Shop. The place sets the best vibe for this 80’s influenced band. It makes you feel like you good be at a Echo and The Bunnymen, Velvet Underground, or Psychedelic Furs concert with Molly Ringwald at the bar. Their droney lyrics and fuzzed out guitars set the perfect backdrop for that era. And the best part is that their songs are so good that you’ll wanna own the vinyl for your record collection. This sophomore release contains even more slower and darker songs then their debut, but it is good to hear the band playing a somewhat still familiar sound.

Those Dancing Days
"In Our Space Hero Suits"
****
Who would of guessed that a group of Swedish teenagers would come up with such brilliant indie pop songs to get us old music enthusiasts so excited. Well it has happened cause the minute their debut single “Those Dancing Days” dropped we wet our pants with excitement. This is the perfect single to get you dancing, while singing along all week long. Other great songs include “Run Run” and “Home Sweet Home”. There must be something in the water in Sweden as the Swedes continue to put out great music.

Ladyhawke
"Ladyhawke"
*****
Ladyhawke is the genius of a young Australian girl that’s real name is Pip. She has crafted a debut album that is so much fun that any fan of pop music will enjoy. Her love of the 80’s shines throughout this album. If Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, and Madonna would make more updated music they would sound a bit like this. The already hit singles;
“Back Of The Van”, “Paris Is Burning”, and “Dusk To Dawn” have been playing in clubs for almost a year now and kids are loving it. So it is no surprise that this album is a hit. And it doesn’t hurt that her artwork and image are great as well.

"Double Negative"
***
Yes we buy and check out pretty much everything that In The Red puts out, because unlike many record labels, they put out pure quality releases. And Black Time is no exception. This fuzzed out guitar rock is pure genius music for the mentally insane. Their music is highly unrecognizable for the average person, but for those of you that like truly are in the know, you have been waiting impatiently for this new album. The only thing that I could say to compare this album to would be the Coachwhips last album.

"Bloomsbury EP"
****
We first heard about this band from one of our beloved bands, Ra Ra Riot. The band is currently on tour with them and killing it. Following in the footsteps of indie greats, Belle and Sebastian, Princeton make happy twee-pop with a full orchestra sound that contains a strong lyrical sense. Check out the song “Eminent Victorians” for it’s catchy chorus and ironic scholarly content. You’ll be singing along to this sound all day long after you listen to it.

Lili Z.
"The Two Of Us"
****
When listening to this album you never would be able to guess that Lili Zeller self recorded this entire album in her Paris home on an 8 track. Lili Z sounds like a “punkier version of Jennifer Gentle(TM Steph).” She takes on the form of an electro guitar psychobilly punk rocker with ghostly sounds. If you like The Cramps then you’ll enjoy what Lili has created on this new album.

Roses Kings Castles
"Roses Kings Castles"
***
Pete Doughtry’s drummer has gone solo and produced his own album under the name, Roses Kings Castles. Like his boss, this guy has a large poetic side to him. Each song on this album reads like a poetry book played out in a pure twee pop form. The lyrics resemble a sunnier/happier side than his previous band made. On this album the drummer takes on more of a Belle and Sebastian style form than a garage rocker.

This is the third album for Joshua Homme and Jesse Hughes. This duo make popular rock tunes for redneck hipsters. This isn’t the kind of music that you will hear coming outta a bar in Williamsburg, but it is the perfect music to blast while racing down your dirt road in your corvette. "Microcastle"
*****
Yes by now all of you know who Deerhunter is. They are this wacky experimental noise pop group from Atlanta. But what many of you don’t know is that you need to get this album. It is by far one of the best albums of this year. With each new release the band takes on a new direction of musical discovery. Like other experimental bands Liars, Gang Gang Dance, and Animal Collecitve the band started out making such highly experimental music that normal people felt alienated, but on this new album the band takes a more accessible approach that finds them winning over new fans all over the world while still crafting new and exciting sounds.

"Ones and Zeros"
*****
These Los Angeles based indie poppers have made a stunning return to the throne with 6 new songs. They won us other with their debut album so much that we chased them around the country in order to get them to give us some more good tracks. The result is this fine collection of new songs. The lead song “Ones and Zeros” is a true hit in the waiting. Think a poppier version of Blonde Redhead and you are very close to what the band sounds like. Lead by haunting and beautiful female vocals the band takes us back to the mid 1990’s era of great indie pop songs that you can actually sing along to. Check out the Kanine Records website to see their new video now.

Kaiser Chiefs
"Off With Their Heads"
***
This Blur influenced Britpop band knows how to make hit singles. They write the kind that are poppy enough to stick in your head all day long while still hyper enough to fill any indie dance floor. Like some of their previous singles like “I Predict A Riot”, this album contains another terrific single “Never Miss A Beat” that will keep their fans happy and newcomers interested. This album is by far not their best work, but still has enough juice to keep the band in the playing field.

When I first saw this band play at the Cake Shop I totally feel in love with their fay lyrics and tender playing style. They instantly reminded me of The Divine Comedy and early Pulp. Vivian Girls
"Vivian Girls"
*****
Kickball Katy, Cassie Ramone, and Frankie Rose have been putting out lofi recorded 7” singles for only a short time around their Brooklyn hometown. Each release has sold out instantly and garnished a massive amount of attention. So much attention that In The Red re-released their debut album when it instantly sold out the first time on an even smaller indie label. With mixing elements of 60’s girl groups with 90’s shoegaze, and fuzzed out guitars/feedback the band has instantly become one of the most talked about groups in Brooklyn. And with such great songs like “Tell The World” and “Where Do You Run To” it is no question as to why.

Mogwai
"The Hawk Is Howling"
***
Mogwai are well known as innovators in the instrumental guitar rock scene. Every since the mid 90’s they have been championed for their sound. The only problem now is that that sound hasn’t evolved much, so it starts to sound repetitive. But for those of you that like their bands to consistently sound the same, you’ll be extremely pleased with this new release.

Free Blood is a duo out of Brooklyn that has been making great jerky dance oriented singles for about five years now. All of them until now have only been released on various 12”s. As John quit !!! to concentrate on Free Blood full time he has crafted some super cool/hype disco flavored dance tunes with his partner Madeline Davy. One of the coolest parts is that Molly Schnick of Jean on Jean evens plays on the album. Check out the single “Quick and Painful” first as this is the jam. Gang Gang Dance has been making experimental noise rock in Brooklyn since early 2000. After numerous releases the band has finally made an album that combines a terrific sense of experimentation with a dancey rhythm and a bit of pop sense. Overall the band is still very much an experimental outfit, but this time they have managed to add a strong pop sense that makes each song more accessible and fun to listen to. Fucked Up
"The Chemistry Of Common Life"
***
Fucked Up is the hardcore, punk band that is ok for indie kids to like. Their music isn’t too hard, but also not too soft. And with an insane live show, it is no wonder that kids from all over the world are curious about what is going on with this band. With a lead singer that loves to incite chaos by cutting himself and encouraging stage invasions fans always leave with stories to tell for days on end. The only problem is that the live show is way more fun than the actual recordings. But for those that are looking for a night to remember, I encourage you to check out this band live.

It is not that often that you come across a cool garage/punk band from Puerto Rico, but these boys do the genre well by making a great racket and keeping the music original by singing in their own native language. Holy Hail
"Independent Pleasure Club"
*****
Holy Hail is a group that clearly likes to have a ton of fun. And upon listening to this debut album, you will hear why. Cat's a rapper from the dirty south who's sister sings in a "praise and worship" band, Kevin's got a one in a million cat's eye and has never been on the Internet, Michally's a preacher's daughter and Matt's a Puerto Rican Jew. Together, with Michally's driving basslines, Matt's crisp backbeats and the rapid fire co-ed vocal duo of Cat and Kevin, Holy Hail draws on the honky tonk and the old school, Southern gothic and Westward expansion bringing in a new dance flavor to fill your ears with delight. They bring politically charged lyrics to the party, leading unsuspecting audiences to dance to the unlikely pairing of quirky dance-rock and observations on both the promise of America and its sprawling dark side. Holy Hail’s debut album reflects a wide range of influences: The Fall, New Order, X, Tom Tom Club, The Gossip, B52’s, and Fleetwood Mac. The band quickly has made a name for them by touring with The Rapture, The Presets, New Young Pony Club, Crystal Castles, and Bonde Do Role.

It is hard to believe that these Manchester legends are still out there making records since their beginning in the late 80’s. It is even harder to believe that their records are still good. But “Hey Ma” has still got some great tunes. Just listen to “Whiteboy”, “Hey Ma”, and “Oh My Heart” and you’ll hear why people still care. The Spinto Band
"Moonwink"
**
When The Spinto Band came out with the song “Oh Mandy” we all feel in love with their poppy choruses. It’s been over 2 years since then and we have been waiting on a new album ever since. The only problem is that this album lacks everything that makes the band so great. There is no hit single and without the band’s signature catchy choruses to sing along they leave us with nothing to look forward to. This album leaves us with a taste that The Spinto Band are just another average indie band to stack on your record shelf after one listen.

With the big buzz on the revival of garage rock, bigger indie labels are signing tons of bands before that have hardly gotten any recognition beforehand. Black Lips, King Khan, and Jay Reatard before were all DIY legends, but now have become household names to many kids. This is the solo project from one of the guys from Black Moth Super Rainbow. Filled with analog tape machines and synths Tobacco recorded these songs in the woods of Philadelphia. Kings Of Leon
"Only By The Night"
*****
Kings of Leon are going for the big time on this new release and it is easy to hear why. Long lost are the scratchy lo-fi style rock recordings. They have no replaced that song with a more slick 70’s style sound that still fits the band perfectly. These tight wearing boys are still young enough to have a long and lasting career as they are already on their 4th record and they are still under the age of 30. By far the best song on this album is “Sex On Fire”. No matter how much I try I can’t stop playing this song. Yes it really is that good as its got the perfect combination of thumping beats to get you dancing and humming along all day / night long.

"Music For An Acclerated Culture"
***
When I first heard the singles “That Boy That Girl” and “Liquid Lives” I was super excited as the songs capture a perfect mixture of punk, rap(grime), and dance music all in one song. Chairlift
"Does You Inspire You"
*****
Chairlift formed in Boulder, Colorado in early 2006 to make live music for haunted houses. Frequenting the Broker Inn on the edge of town for empty late-night jazz shows, Caroline Polachek, Aaron Pfenning and Patrick Wimberly were mystified by the 1980's faux-gothic architecture, oak-cabinet aquariums, vacant dancefloors, fake trees, crystal chandeliers and dark velveteen booths. The inn provided them with the ideal setting for a new breed of pop: a place where subtle clashes blossomed into uncanny pleasures.
Relocating to Brooklyn in the summer of 2006, the trio continued on to develop a hypnotic yet tongue-in-cheek style, playing shows around Brooklyn and the Lower East Side with a thriving society of experimental pop magicians including MGMT, Yeasayer, Suckers, and Mixel Pixel.
This is their debut full-length album followed by the 7” single, “Evident Utensil”, which contains a remix by their friends, MGMT. A true buzz has been brewing about this band, as in the age of DIY loft parties and bands, this is a band that can truly play their instruments while still maintaining a highly experimental and creative edge to their own brand of pop music. Chairlift is the perfect band for fans of Yaz, Kate Bush, Beachhouse, and CocoRosie.

This may not be the best Oasis album of all time, but it is still incredibly good. And as a fan I’m excited to hear that the boys can still pump out some great tunes. They even added some keyboards to the mix this time. Noel even has let the other members contribute some of their own songs to the mix this time around. Check out the singles “Shock Of Lightning” and “Bag It Up” first as these songs will get your up and excited again about Oasis like it is 1995 all over again.

"All The While"
****
This is the debut album from Brooklyn’s indie elite. But this isn’t some DIY warehouse band. France is a group of truly talented and classical trained musicians that truly know how to play their instruments. Fans of Sea Ray, Yo La Tengo, The Shins and will love the poppy and elegantly sounds of the catchy tune “Lighthouse”.

"The Bronx III"
****
Hard rocking LA dudes know how to pull out the big catchy beats while still making hard pounding tunes. This new album is everything that you would want from a modern rock band. Cold War Kids
"Loyalty To Loyalty"
***
This is Cold War Kid’s sophomore release and one that we have been waiting to hear for a long time now. Unfortunately many of these songs pack as much bunch as their debut album kid. But “Something Is Not Right With Me” still stands out as an amazing blues rock inspired tune that will keep their fans satisfied.

Jenny Lewis
"Acid Tongue"
****
This is Jenny Lewis’s second solo album. This childhood actress and front woman of Rilo Kiley truly shines when she goes it alone. We have never been fans of Rilo Kiley, but for some reason when Jenny decides to go it alone our hearts melt with glee. And it is easy to hear/see why when you listen to soft and sweet songs like “Black Sand”. Her country inspired folk songs truly know how to find a place in our hearts.http://www.myspace.com/jennylewismusic

Boo And Boo Too
"No Tempo"
****
I’m shocked that such an apocalyptic sounding rock band has come out of Kansas. This band’s tunes are truly way away from a traditional rock sound. They sound like a better version of Mogwaii with vocals. It is a nice treat to hear something so freshingly new sounding while still very accessible. Catch in NYC during CMJ.

The Walkmen
"You & Me"
***
The Walkmen were one of the original NYC indie bands that sprouted from the 2000 music scene. You used to be able to see them play regularly at places like Brownies and Mercury Lounge. But since those days the band has transitioned into some much bigger than your average indie band. With their raspy vocals and angular guitars they have set the blueprint for modern indie rock. And this new album is a testament that they can still make great music. Although it doesn’t have a great single like “The Rat” the album is still a great listen.

The Submarines
"Honeysuckle Weeks"
****
I instantly feel in love with this record as it reminds me of The Cardigans, The Concretes, and St. Etienne. This LA duo craft sweet, electronic, and somewhat twee pop inspired, that is so fun and catchy that you can’t help but love it. The best songs are the songs with the girl vocals as her voice is heavenly. And girls seem to sing twee pop songs better.

Neil Halstead
"Oh! Mighty Engine"
****
Many people know Neil as he was the lead singer in Slowdive and Mojave 3, now Neil also likes to write solo albums filled with tender folk songs to lay around on the beach to. As a fellow surfer, Neil has always embraced the quiet and tender side of life and his music clearly displays that. The great thing is that he does it so well that listening to his albums is a real treat.

Correcto
"Correcto"
***
Correcto is a side project from one of the members of Franz Ferdinand with some of his other Scottish buddies. For this project the band takes a strong post punk approach to angular songwriting. You can hear a jerky dance number in “No One Under 30” that fans of Josef K will be proud of. But for those of you looking for more Franz Ferdinand inspired treats, you should just wait for the next FF record.

"Sexuality"
***
This French dude knows how to make sexy music. It’s like he was transplanted from the 70’s to a future electro lounge club. I hate to say this but this would be perfect music for a modern porn film. The music is super smooth, sexy, and soothing. Check out the single “Divine” as it is the best song on the album that even has a dancey groove to it.

Glasvegas
"Glasvegas"
*****
Glasgow has truly given us one of the coolest new bands to come out in a long time. Dressed in all black you would think that this band is going to be a dark and melancholy crew, yet apon first listen to their hit single “Daddy’s Gone” you instantly hear joyful 60’s doo-wap influenced sounds. Like the Jesus and Mary Chain and Johnny Cash before them, they may have a cool dark image but their songs inspire a large amount of hope with catchy choruses to sing along to.

TV On The Radio
"Dear Science"
****
TV On The Radio have brought us another great album full of great tunes. The band has taken a more R&B approach over their last doo-wappy sound that we all heard on their last album. The songs tend to sound even more laid back and psychedelic then before with still maintaining their pop edge.

Metronomy
"Nights Out"
****
Dance music is getting even more wacky and weird with each new year. With bands taking on more of a dance edge every day, it is totally natural to hear them combining more rock and electronic elements together. But Metronomy like to mix things up by making their songs as weird as possible. Wit squelching vocals and squeaky samplers the band has made a cool dance record that is even weirder than Crystal Castles and Klaxons that still has a good pop edge. Check out “My Heart Rapid” first as this song is a great dance floor filler.

This Brooklyn duo has been the talk of the town for a couple years now. ****
Cute and dancey indie pop has always been a favorite among the music community. This indie band from Sheffield is no different in that they have managed to put out some cool dancey twee pop within their first two records. But within those albums there has been some great singles that didn’t get enough attention. Hince, the reason for this special release. After The Rapture came out a whole crew of new rock bands came out and it seems that the UK is breeding more of them than from anywhere else. Every since the Bloc Party got big a new dance band from the UK has been getting big. The only problem is that many of them just don’t have the songs to back it up. On this new release Kevin Barnes has decided to take a more experimental route over his last previous pop hits. Although most of the album doesn’t contain poppy singles, you can still count on “Id Engager” to stick in your head all night long. Noah And The Whale is UK folk pop at its best. Their hit single “5 Years Time” is so catchy that you can’t help but hit repeat on your player over and over again. They know how to mix elements of indie, folk, and world music so well that the sound as if they have been playing music together sense they were born and this is only their debut album. Sometimes you get one of those mystery bands that hardly tours, I mean hardly even plays out, yet their music is so cool, mysterious, and well good that they end up doing well. Their post punk induced chants bring recent comparions to Cinic and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah while still retaining their own originality.

This new band has mastered the art of the blues/rock sound within the indie realm. Fans of Kings Of Leon and The Black Keys will enjoy their songs well into the night. The Dandy Warhols
"Earth To The Dandy Warhols"
****
The Dandy Warhols have been making cool Brit influenced pop since the early 1990’s. Each album that they make seems to get poppier, yet on the last couple of releases the band has been willing to take more chances and add in some weirder and more experimental elements to the mix. This album contains a lot of early shoegaze and pop influences, then tops it off with some cool electro experimentation. The best songs hit at the beginning of the album with “Mission Control” and “The World Come On”.

Jean on Jean
"Jean on Jean"
*****
Molly Schnick’s new solo project, Jean on Jean is about feelings. When her longtime band Out Hud broke up in 2005, she started over from the beginning. She bought audio recording software and a microphone and set about to write songs on cello and guitar that spoke to a time of tremendous change. Over the next three years, she developed the sound slowly, dragging her set up around to her various Brooklyn apartments, adding layers of strings, vocals, guitars, organs and percussion when appropriate.
The results of her labors are the nine songs that make up the self-titled album “Jean on Jean”. The sound is warm, lush and orchestrated, like Colin Blunstone’s “One Year” or Judee Sill’s “Heart Food”. And like those records, the lyrics are personal, focused on the highs and lows that go along with any major change. Jean on Jean is a terrific record for fans of Grizzly Bear, Sian Alice Group, and Mazzy Star.

Besides having one of the coolest names in the music business, Awesome Color make super charged and fun garage psych rock, dirty Brooklyn style. You can often find them playing out in all age loft and warehouse parties all over Brooklyn. If you manage to make it to one of their shows you’ll find a ton of kids going crazy for this fun band. This is an awesome record, hands down. I love the scratchy, screamy vocals. Each song sounds like a breath of fresh air. This is a band that is not afraid to take risks. Late Of The Pier
"Fantasy Black Channel"
****
These three UK youngsters have made one of the craziest experimental dance records. Mixing prog, disco, funk, psych, and electro all together the band sounds like a crazy mix. Each song is fun, but way out on the weird side. It is as if they purposes tried not to make pop songs. Instead they decided to venture off into a new experimental direction. This album sounds like a kitchen experiment where you would throw Muse, The Darkness, Klaxons, and Beatles records into the blender to see what came out. The result might be extremely weird, but it’s very exciting and orginal.

"Thatcher’s Children"
****
Billy Childish has been making the same style of music for generations now. And thank goodness for us that he is truly one talented individual. We try and collect each and every single one of his releases. Billy often takes on a new character by creating a new band to play along with on each new album, but nonetheless his musical sound retains its original garage rock sound. On this new album Billy Childish forms a new band that pokes fun of his own government (Margaret Thatcher). Being as that is the subject for his new album, “Thatcher’s Children” is actually the best song on the album, with it containing a strong garage rock stomp.

Steetlab is a duo of two NYC engineers, producers, remixers, djs, and now live entertainers. They recently just started playing out live and we got the chance to have them perform live at our Aug. 22 party. Their fusion on indie/rock with modern dance beats and samples makes for some super fun tunes. Check out the best song on this debut EP, “NYSound”. For those of you in love with the DFA sound, it will remind of you LCD Soundsystem “Losing My Edge” previously hit single. "Who Said Party"
*****
We first learned about this band via Myspace. I can’t remember how we first heard about them, but as soon as we wrote them about how much we liked their music, they replied back right away about coming over to NY from Spain to play some shows/parties. So we booked them to play our little party and were instantly blown away with how much fun they were. Their music is simple, yet tons of fun. Fans of CSS, Bonde Do Role, Crystal Castles, and New Young Pony Club will love bouncing around to these songs. Each song is layered in a simple, yet highly danceable rhythm, then topped off with some cynical lyrics about loser boyfriends (“Dirty Tricks”) and partying (“Forbidden Coctail”). Ana and Alex sing in English with a cute accent that adds an adorable touch to their music and keeps the songs completely original. This album is only eight songs long, but each song is a hit single that will keep you satisfied for months on end.

Johnny Flynn
"A Larum"
***
Johnny Flynn sounds like an Irish folk artist that is conjuring up the youthful spirit of Bob Dylan while wandering like a lost soul in search for truth and adventures in life. You can hear traces of a new worldly folk sound that has become ever so popular with bands like Beirut. This is definitely a worldly record that has the ability to crossover to multiple audiences while still maintaining a true sense of originality and creativity.

"VV Brown"
****
People are always going to be in love with the sweet girl sounds of the 60’s. And every since Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Sharon Jones, and Estelle started to get more popular more female artists are popping up with similar sounds. VV Brown is no different in that she sings like she could easily of been a star in the early 60’s. But her songs are so addictly sweet that you forgive her for sounding so retro. ****
The Caesars have been around the block and back and have finally decided that after this album, they are going to call it quits. You may or may not know, but many of them are involved in other bands like Peter, Bjorn, and John that have been occupying their time lately. Caesars make fun pop/punk that fits perfectly in the summertime sun or fresh springtime air. Their music is light, poppy, dancey, and catchy. This album was originally recorded to be a double album, but the label decided that it would be too expensive to put out, so they picked the best 11 songs for this release. The hit single that you will want to hear first is “Waking Up”. It has a bit of a similar element to their previous hit “Jerk It Out”.

Conor Oberst says that this album is unluck anything that he has ever done before with his band Bright Eyes, so he decided to release it under his own name. For any Bright Eyes fan out there, you won’t hear that much of a difference at all. Conor’s songs have the same delicate and dark sounds that he always manages to write. This album sounds like the band just left off from recording “Urban Hymns”. Most of it sounds like the song “Sonnet”. So those of you that loved The Verve poppy yet still mystical and ethereal sound will totally love this album. Set to bet up on my of the new indie bands that are still trying to find their own sound. Dungen
"4"
*****
Psychedelic greatness is what Dungen create. This Swedish group has been making music for a while now, but have been only exposing it at their terms (little by little). This is actually their 5th release to date, but probably one of their best yet. It contains such a mellow, yet great psych feel to it that you can’t help but love each song. If you love the Charlie Brown soundtrack, then you’ll totally love this band. No kidding, they actually have a song that makes you feel like Snoppy is at the piano jamming away. So imagine that, a bunch of sixteen year olds raided their dads’ record collections and actually feel in love with their fathers’ sounds of the 60s’. I guess those melodies just stuck in their heads. Then we’ll really have something to reckon with.

"The Great Unwanted"
**
I’ve been collecting 7” singles by Lucky Soul for years now. Then when I found out that their full length was only coming out on cd, I got totally bummed. Their 7”s were truly amazing pieces of artwork. A band this cute, sweet, and sacred is not destined to be big in the mainstream, but no matter as I truly love their 60’s female fronted vocals. It is a refreshing experience to hear a Lucky Soul song each time I put one of their songs on. Now that the album has finally come out on vinyl, we are reviewing it. Yes we are that vinyl snobby. But no worries as a band this good is worth the wait, as good things/music increase in value with time.

"The Curse Of The Sugars"
****
At first I thought this band would be another 60’s girl group gone doo-wap, but instead of that I got this cool, arty indie band that likes to bring a whole collection of sounds to the forefront. The Sugars are pure and simple fun. There is nothing complex to their music, but it is sometimes refreshing to just listen to a fun and simple indie band. And that’s exactly what you get from The Sugars. But be thankful as you never know when that style of music might go away.

Oneida are music veterans that have been releasing albums for over 10 years now. With each new release you never know what kind of sound you are going to get. The only thing you can be certain of is that each one will supply a cool, challenging, and interesting sound. On this new album the band takes a jammed out prog sound that is built around 10 minute jam sessions. Although this isn’t music that you’ll be humming all day long, it is truly some highly creative and innovative stuff worth checking out.

El Guincho
"Alegranza"
****
El Guincho was one of the most buzzed about artists at SXSW this past year. This South American creates all of his own sounds that bring a strong post punk dance feel out that is all sung in his native language. His dynamic shows have gotten people up in arms with excitement as they dance to his tropical mix of percussion and electronic musical flavors. This debut has already garnished a strong amount of attention, but it is truly with the live show that people are referring to El Guincho when they mention his name.

Primal Scream
"Beautiful Future"
*****
We all know Primal Scream well by now. They’ve been around since the early 80’s Creation Records days. Bobby Gillespie, the lead singer, also used to drum in Jesus and The Mary Chain before he decided to do Primal Scream full time. And it is a good thing as they outlived his previous band. Each time Primal Scream seems to venture in new directions. Going from flower psych pop, to post comedown dance music, to electro, to 60’s hard hitting rock n’ roll, the band has hit every genre with star studding pride. Now they are talking on a more soulful, rocking, r&b style that suits them well. The lead songs tend to be “The Glory Of Love” and the first single “Can’t Go Back” single. Both are terrific songs that will continue to get tons of radio and club play around the world. Bjorn from Peter, Bjorn, and John even produced five songs out of the album. It is good to have the Scream back in full action.

Jay Reatard
"Singles 06-07"
*****
Jay Reatard is the most hard working musician in the music business today that I know of. He has played in so many bands and produced so many others that it is hard to name them all. But this musical punk is truly talented. Just check out some of his past records for The Reatards, Digital Leather, and Lost Sounds. Then listen to some other great new bands that he has produced like Cheap Time and The Strange Boys. Both are young up and comers from the Nashville, TN scene that are truly great garage pop. But if you truly want to hear some of Jay’s great stuff then you need to check out this singles collection. This collection captures some of Jay’s best work over the years. Starting off with my personal favorite, “Night of Broken Glass” and ending up with “Night Visions”, you are assured of some great hits here to spazz out to. If you haven’t been able to collect any of these rare and limited single releases, this collection is truly a treat. Also be on the lookout of the Matador singles collection coming soon.

Stereolab
"Chemical Chords"
****
Does the world really need another Stereolab record? Even though each record sounds the same, the answer is yes. Because they might follow a Kraut/pop similar path each time, they do it so well that it is always a treat to hear. And remember they are the originators of this sound. This is their 11th album to date and one that sounds just as fresh as their previous albums. This is the perfect album to listen to with your friends at any summertime outdoor party as the songs are light, airy, sweet, and poppy.

The Rascals
"Rascalize"
***
The Rascals got a ton of hype as the lead singer released an album with Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys under the name, The Last Shadow Puppets. Luckily for The Rascals the album was a massive success. We even go the pleasure of seeing them play a last minute show at the Cake Shop to only a hundred people. And yes they were great. Not to mention super cool/nice guys. And after all the hype of that was over, The Rascals released their own debut album. The only problem is that it doesn’t stand up to the quality of The Last Shadow Puppets album. It’s got some great rock/pop songs on it, but nothing that will blow you away. It is more just cool pub rock music with great outfits and haircuts.

The Dutchess And The Duke
"She’s The Dutchess, He’s The Duke"
**
This is another group of young West Coast hipsters that think they are in the 60’s. With duel boy/girl vocals they sound like a raspy version of the Mama’s and The Papas. Unfortunately they just aren’t as good as their 60’s heroes. They even cover a Jim Morrison song. At first listen I totally couldn’t stand his voice, but after five listens got used to it. The playing is good, twangy, and folkified, but unfortunately the songs still don’t pack the punch that they need to stand out enough.

Ill Ease And The Racket
"Turn It Loose"
****
Ill Ease has been playing and living around the Brooklyn scene for over 10 years now. Her music tends to be recorded in a lo-fi manner that makes her take on angular/folk music seem even more abstract. But one thing that seems to remain the same is that her music is truly original and inspiring. Each song is played in an angular guitar manner that bridges old post punk similarities to The Raincoats, while still sounding very much like a modern day Brooklyn band. Fans of Marnie Stern’s music will also enjoy Ill Ease.

"Tickley Feather"
***
Tickley is folk/weird coolness that fans of the new lo-fi movement will truly enjoy. Her sounds are delicate, beautiful, yet bewildering. Each song takes on a new character of sound. Fans of Animal Collective, Atlas Sound, and 60’s psych will enjoy venturing into Tickley Feather’s world. You can see her this summer on selective show dates with Chairlift and Aerial Pink.

Atlas Sound
"Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Fe"
****
Atlas Sound Is Brad Cox’s, the lead singer of Deerhunter, solo project. On this sophomore album Brad takes music even farther out of reach of reality with super spaced out jams and kraut-rock influences. You can hear Brad channeling a long lost era of Faust and Can on these recordings. Each one is tripped out music that is great to listen to at any time of the day. But best to listen to when you want to relax and let your mind wander.

Death Cab For Cutie
"Narrow Stairs"
****
Death Cab For Cutie is the true sound of indie. This band defined what 90’s and early 2000 indie bands sound like. Ever since the OC championed them, the band finally broke out into the mainstream. But even though they now have gone on to release records on a major label, they have kept their original indie sound that made them so great in the first place. And this last album is a testament to how great their sound still is. Each song sounds just as fresh as they did 10 years ago. The only difference is that this time around the band doesn’t have to carry their own gear on stage.

Scarlett Johansson
"Anywhere I Lay My Head"
***
I know we aren’t supposed to like records by actors, but Scarlett Johansson truly has a magical voice. She makes me feel like I have been sweep away to a magical wonderland. This album she covers her favorite Tom Waits songs with the help of some of her friends; Nick Zinner(YYYs), David Bowie, Tunde Adebimpe(TV On The Radio), and David Sitek on production duties. With David on board they have taken normal folky songs to a new plain of adventure. This is a cool concept album that may not go down in history as one of the best albums ever, but still is cool enough to gain some cred as an interesting listen.

Shock Cinema
"Hell and Highwater"
*****
Returning one year later, Shock Cinema hit us with an album coming out under the moniker "Hell and Highwater”. The band has created an atmospheric soundscape for the high seas. If their debut was " a rash, clashing, noisily-engineered post-punk gnasher" (Big Takeover) flying by at break-neck punk speed, the follow up is more deliberate and varied, allowing you to take a breath and soak in everything on the horizon. Recorded partly in San Francisco and Brooklyn, this album was made with contributions from ex-members of Dragons of Zynth, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and The Rogers Sisters with Chris Cody(Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Tim Green(Fucking Champs) at the mixing desk. It is here that Destiny’s voice soars high above anything that you have heard before. Fans of Glass Candy, Celebration, and Pretty Girls Make Graves will be engrossed in these songs.

Beck
"Modern Guilt"
****
Beck's new album was co-produced by Dangermouse. With that in mind we expected by things. And big things we got with the single "Gamma Ray". The song gives a punch and dancable clitchy pop feel that is super upbeat and tons of fun. The rest of the songs take on more of a slow and tripped out psych rock feel that gives a groovy old school Beck feel. All in all it is great to have Beck still around making cool new records.

Abe Vigoda
"Skeleton"
*****
It seems many of these bands have actually been around quite a good number of years, but finally the world has got up with them. Along with No Age, Health, and Mika Miko these boys come out of the downtown LA all ages scene that inhabits the club, The Smell. Each song is a lo-fi punk/pop number that is played super messy, yet tons of fun to sing along to. Gone are the days when musicians worked super hard to master their playing skills. Instead the kids of today want to concentrate on trying to create a whole new era of sounds by trying to learn their own way of playing instruments. The rest might sound sloppy to some, but to a new age of kids, it is a beautiful new sound. And Abe Vigoda do that sound well, by capturing something that is truly unique, fun, youthful, and innovative.

The Presets
"Apocalypso"
****
The Presets are a perfect fit for the dance oriented Modular label. This Australian duo know how to get a party going by making music in the vain of Justice, Daft Punk, The Whip, and Simian Mobile Disco. The top song on this album is by far, “My People”, as its driving heavy electro beats and chanting chorus is the perfect thing to get you going at 2:00am. The album finally just arrived on vinyl, so we are reviewing it a bit late, but better late than never.

Dirty Pretty Things
"Romance At Short Notice"
***
Everyone knows that Carl used to be one of the head members of The Libertines. They were one of the most beloved bands in England. Why else do you think people still put up with Pete Doughtry’s bad behavior. Once Carl disbanded The Libertines, he went on to form Dirty Pretty Things with a more positive group of musicians. This is their sophomore album to date and one that continues on the same path as their debut album. It is filled with pop/punk numbers that are super fun to sing along to. The best song is “Tired Of England” as its chorus will stick in your head all day long.

Crystal Antlers
"Crystal Antlers"
*****
Yes this is another buzz band that seems to have come out of nowhere, but the difference is that they are truly great. This Longbeach, California crew makes up a merry band of misfits. Each member has a completely different look. They look so different that you can’t even believe that they are all in the same band. But it doesn’t even matter as their music is truly that good. And the best part is that they are the nicest guys that you could ever meet. Their blend of psychedelic punk rock is truly breathtaking and this is only their debut self released demos put together as an EP. Just wait till the band gets a chance to record in a proper studio, they’ll be blowing minds. Fans of Black Mountain will completely love this band. Listen to the song, “A Thousand Eyes” and you’ll instantly be able to tell how great these guys are. Each song is a monster epic number that soars miles high. We got the chance to have them play our big summer day party and it was well worth it as they blew the place apart with excitement.

Black Kids
"Partie Traumatic"
*****
This is a terrific debut album from this young crew of nu-wave indie poppers. What makes it even better is that the band is from Jacksonville, FL, because no one good ever seems to come out of Florida. Not to down as I had a great time living there, but that’s just the way it is. The band plays fun dancey pop with a vocal style reminiscent to The Cure. Each song is tons of fun and filled with stuff that you will enjoy dancing along to at any party. Check out the hit single “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You”, even though you’ve already heard it in every club. When I first got this song I stayed up all night singing and dancing along to it. This is definitely one of the coolest debuts of 2008.

"LP3"
***
These instrumental, experimental, dance heads have gone tropical and gypsy on us. This record sounds like the band has been hanging out with Buena Vista Social Club too long. Although the songs are a ton of fun, they lack the modern day dance excitement that we are looking for in a band like this. But never fear as they still give you some great numbers like "Mumtaz Khan" that will fill your headphones with glee. This is great driving music for fans of Aphex Twin.

The Faint
"Fascination"
***
We totally love this band. When we first heard of them during the "Blank Wave Arcade" days, that record was a standard in every dj set that we played. And it was well deserved as the crowd would go crazy every time. But unfortunately it has been too long since the band has put out a new record and their sound has slowed down into a mellow and experimental industrial tempo. The music is still super cool, but there is nothing on here that is going to make the dance floor go as crazy as it used to. "I Treat You Wrong" even sounds a bit like Depeche Mode trying to experiment with industrial sounds. If someone was to remix "Mirror Error" and make it more upbeat, then we might have a hit on our hands. Other wise I would advice everyone to focus on their earlier material as that is the best stuff(the last three previous albums).

Oxford Collapse
"Bits"
****
Oxford Collapse is one of Brooklyn’s most beloved bands. This is their fourth full length album to date. The band started out as a fired up post punk dance oriented band, but soon forged more into an early 90’style American indie band that brings strong comparisons to Husker Du. This release was originally going to be a double album, but the band decided to simply release it as a 13 song album and take the other songs to release as multiple releases with other indie labels as EP’s and singles. So be on the lookout for those as well. Each release is collector’s treat.

There is quite a buzz about this band and the buzz is well deserved. This lo-fi recorded album brings back memories of listening to old records by Minutemen and Firehouse. This is one of the best indie dance records of the year. Backed with a New Order vibe these Australians know how to get kids dancing. Nashville, TN is truly home to country music, but over the last decade it has also sprung a new crop of bands that are taking their American country and blues roots to new levels. Silver Jews have truly taken traditional roots music to an unsurpassing level. This is their 8th album to date and one that is truly a masterpiece. Fans of Wilco, My Morning Jacket, and Black Mountain will savior their heartfelt songs. When my buddy Paulie first emailed me that he was managing a new band from California and wanted some help setting up shows in NY for them to play, I never thought that they were going to be this good. But after seeing them play two out of their ten packed out shows, within only one week, I instantly feel in love and knew that this was truly one special band. While watching them play, we all looked at each other with that look that we knew we were watching something that was going to be huge. This was a similar feeling that I had while seeing The Strokes in 2000 at Mercury Lounge and Jay Reatard at Death By Audio last year. This is a band that doesn’t give a care about the fashion crowd. Instead they take an old post punk approach by wearing regular college style prep clothes. But not like Vampire Weekend, they dress more like regular baseball suburban boys. By not having to focus on their style, the band wins over the crowd with their incredible angular garage pop songs. You can hear traces of Television and Modern Lovers all over each song. It sounds as if Jonathan Richman has been reborn as a 20 something year old kid. Fans of Black Lips, The Strokes, and The Ramones will all fall instantly in love with this band. I know we all have. When this band first came out I was blown away with how amazing their music made me feel. You get a strong sense of calmness and freedom when you listen to their songs. Fans of Band Of Horses and Fleet Foxes might think they are in on the new alt. country sound, but My Morning Jacket know how to do it proper as they’ve been doing it for many years now. Although I think their previous albums are much better than this new album, these new songs still capture some of the magic that these guys have. Now they have come back with their sophomore album that ventures more into the pop punk direction. Gone are all of the fist pumping songs. Instead you have a more melodic approach. But they do manage to give us one great single with “This Is An Emergency” that flavors the sound that we found on their debut album. This is a great single that will continue to please their fans until they manage to give us another new album in 6 months time.

The Wedding Present
"El Rey"
***
It is hard to believe that David Gedge and his crew are still making cool indie records. This is a band that was at the head of the alternative indie scene since the late 1980’s. Their catalog is so deep with great releases that is insanely impressive. They maybe in their 40’s now, but the band still knows how to write great songs. Each one sounds just as fresh as the early days. But for a true musical discovery check out some of their earlier releases like the “Hit Parade” series. Those were some truly magical records.

TK Webb and the Visions
"Ancestor"
***
TK Webb has been playing around the East Coast for many years now. Although he has mostly been under the radar to the national public, his music has garnished fans from fellow musicians from the best of the best. His combination of blues, retro rock, and slacker indie spills out well onto this new release. Each song sounds as if it could only be recorded by some in their fifties, but TK is still rip with age in his 20’s. As he continues to belt his soul out, plenty of hard fuzzed out guitars back him to make a sound that fans of Bob Dylan, Led Zepplin, and The Rolling Stones will all love.

The Airborne Toxic Event
"The Airborne Toxic Event"
*
This band might be big in LA, or at least that is what their press kick says, but by listening to this album I wouldn’t want to be at any of their shows. Their crowd must be filled with really boring people that don’t like music with any creative or original edge to it, because this band sounds like a repeat of U2, Midnight Oil, and The Killers all over again. Sorry but this is truly really just boring music. Not that it is bad, just boring mainstream music. And we all ready have enough of that. And they wonder why the music industry is having problems.

Weezer
"Weezer"
*****
It is by no surprise that the new Weezer album is really good. This is a band that continually writes great hits. Everyone remembers this band from their huge hits “Buddy Holly” and “Sweater”, but hopefully they’ll continue to follow them as they continue to write great songs like “Pork and Beans”. Unlike many bands, as these guys get older, you don’t get a sense that they are losing any creative talent. Instead they continue to write songs that are relevent for their age and time. This album assures us that indie’s great heroes have still got the goods. For more big hits, also check out the songs on this album “Troublemaker”, The Greatest Man That Ever Lived”, and “Everybody Gets Dangerous”.

The Vandelles
"The Vandelles EP"
****
The Vandelles have always been a favorite of ours. This fuzzed out, surf rock band sure knows how to tickle us with delight. This is a new 5 song EP is filled with exactly what you want from this Brooklyn crew; loud and distorted guitars that hark back to the days of Jesus and Mary Chain (“Psychocandy”). You can often catch this crew hanging and playing with A Place To Bury Strangers, as they’re sound is well fitted together. The Vandelles are by far one of the coolest Brooklyn bands in our lifetime that know how to make a great wall of noise sound beautiful.

"Free Your Mind And Win A Pony"
****
Psych, folk rock has always been big in the States. There is an endless amount of travel options filled with open roads, countrysides, city life, and deserts to inspire any creative mind. And that is exactly the formula that inspired this duo, Linda and Tommy, when it came time to create this debut album. They left the dirty sidewalks of Williamsburg, Brooklyn for the greener pastures of LA to record an album filled with Jim Morrison’s ghost. At first it sounds almost like you are listening to a lost album by The Doors, until Linda’s soft dreamy vocals kick in bringing more modern comparisons to Lavandar Diamond.

"Takes"
***
Adem is an one man, multi-instrumentalist that is well loved in his England homeland. This is a truly talented man that can play almost any instrument known to mankind. Although his music seems to take a slow tempo, his lyrics are pure poetry. Fans of Badly Drawn Boy, Spiritualized, and White Williams will find solace in Adem’s work.

Health
"Health/Disco"
****
Health is one of the coolest noise/experimental bands to come out of the LA DIY all ages scene. Their debut album was recorded at the club, The Smell, to try and capture what the band was truly about. Unfortunately it didn’t even come close to capture the insane energy and excitement that you will fitness from them live. This remix album takes the band on a different journey by supplying remixes from many of their friends. The best remixes of this album come from Crystal Castles (“Crimewave”), Pictureplane (“Lost Time”). Crystal Castles take the song on an electro rollercoaster making it bleep in and out to a dancing freezy. Then Pictureplane take their song by adding tribal percussion elements giving it a post punk chanting vibe that truly will get anybody grooving on the dancefloor. This album is truly a treat for any indie or dance kid out there.

"The Rhumb Line"
****
Finally these NY favorites have released their debut full length album. Unfortunately we already know most of the songs from seeing the band play live over 200 times, but at least we know they are ones that we really like. So this album seems like a best of to many of us. To those that have never heard of the band before this album will be a real treat of musical discovery. Start of with the song, “Dying Is Fine”, as this is truly the band at one of their best moments.

"The Secret Life"
***
New Bloods are a group of girls that are taking post punk chanting to a new DIY level. Think of them as a mix between The Slits, Mika Miko, and Sleater Kinney. And leave it up to Kill Rockstars to find the next great all girl punk band. With constant touring there is no doubt that this band will continue to be on everyone’s radar for years to come.

Ponytail
"Ice Cream Spiritual"
*****
Ponytail is the perfect blend of chaotic noise and energized harmony. As part of the new DIY punk scene that is so striving out now, they tour nonstop all age gigs. If you ever wondered what is the new generation of punk is, then you need look no further. Ponytail is well part of that scene that has brought other great bands like; No Age, Mika Miko, Health, Dan Deacon, The Deathset, and many others out into the spotlight. They are making creative and highly original music that follows no traditional music molds. This is the sophomore release from the Baltimore foursome that truly captures their live spastic, yet musical bliss.

"How Do You Like Your Love?"
****
This band takes you back to the early 90’s with a blissful, shoegaze, indie pop sound. This is a sound from an era when it was truly cool to be indie. "The Best Of"
*****
Everyone in the world knows who Radiohead are. Even soccer moms and dads. Hell your grandpa probably knows who they are. But that doesn’t mean that kids don’t like them. This band has put over 7 albums out in their lifetime and each one continues to shock the world. We are actually bigger fans of “The Bends” and “Ok Computer” albums, but still realize that each of their albums is pure genius. This special release comes in multiple formats, the best being a triple cd/dvd set and a 4 vinyl release set. The compilation takes the band’s best singles and bsides to combine an incredible collection. Call me crazy but “Fake Plastic Trees” still gives me the shivers with excitement.

Be on the lookout for his U.S. showdates at Pitchfork Festival and NYC show at Terminal 5. Each one will truly be an inspiring musical experience. "At Mount Zoomer "
****
Montreal's own hometown heroes have finally given us their sophomore album. With their debut album selling over 90 thousand units it is no surprise that the band is doing extremely well for them self. And by the sound of this new album, it seems that they will continue on down the same path. Fans of Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah all know and love this band well. With dark, raspy, and luring vocals and added angular guitars it is already gaining comparisons to Television's "Marque Moon".

Everyone knows and loves Bob Dylan and it appears that this band does as well. This is the debut album made all over the country as they traveled homelessly from town to town or shall we say, from couch to couch. This is a true sounding indie band from the heart of America, the Midwest. They have no tricks or frills to grab your attention, they simply just have good catchy indie pop songs that will stick in your head all day long. This is the kind of band that sounds peferctly fitting for the soundtrack of any WB TV show. This debut album is their follow-up to their well received self-released debut EP "The Rules Were Handed Down". It is "an absolute doll of pop music(Smother.net)".

"Directions To See A Ghost"
****
Many people have been slamming this new album, because they said it sounds just like their first one. But if they already got the formula down pat, then why should they have to change their sound. No one gives Spiritualized or BRMC any beef for their records all sounding the same. Well The Black Angels make great records full of dark, psychedelic angst that any fan of Jesus and Mary Chain, Velvet Underground, or A Place To Bury Strangers would be stoked on. So there is no need to change the formula. Instead just sit back and enjoy this terrific record.

These Midwest kids are keeping indie alive and well with their own version of dance twee-pop. Forget about having live drums, instead these youngsters have enlisted a crew of tapdancers to keep the best going. Filled with boy/girl trade off vocals Tilly and The Wall know how to make sweet songs that are easy to sing along to. For a special treat check out their latest single, “Beat Connection” that was only available as a limited edition 7” single. For this album “Blood Flowers” and “Poor Man’s Ice Cream” hold down the fort as the key tracks.

Indie twee pop is still strong and you can hear it within The Lodger’s new album. Fans of Sarah Records will be proud to buy this new album. This duo are true poets. They mix poetry with rock, indie, spoken word, and hip hop to make music that is so much fun that you can’t help but sing and dance along. The funny thing is that it is not a gimmick. This is real music made by true music enthusiasts.
Check out their first hit single “Thou Shall Always Kill” where they name check every band out there for a comedy flavor backed by a groovy beat. Another great surprise is
“Fixed” where they use Dizzee Rascal’s song as a sample to rap over proclaiming hip hop to be a truly talented music category. So if you are looking for a good time check out this album. For fans of The Streets, Beck, and William Burroughs.

Wild Billy Childish and The Blackhands
"Live In The Netherlands"
****
If you love garage, blues, rock then you already know of this legendary musician called Billy Childish. He has been making music since the dawn of man. This UK legend continues to take the lo-fi garage jangle formula and put out super charged, edgy, and fun records. Billy plays with numerous different bands, but each time they are quality acts. This release is a story book of one of his legendary shows with one of his bands during his early days. This shows Billy beginning his roots in music, that have continued to inspire him on to this day.

Sorry man, but this album is just so boring. Elvis Costello needs to call it quits and do something else cause it seems all of his creative spark has dried up. Muse are a phenomen. They are so big and appeal to such a wide range of people that it is simply amazing. You can find jocks, indie kids, punk, metal heads, and computer nerds all in one room excited to hear and see the band. With their dark, euphoric, and stadium size sound they have captured the hearts of millions. This release marks a documentation from one of their most triumphant shows at Wembley Stadium. It features 14 live songs, including my personal favorite "Supermassive Black Hole" and 20 live videos. This is by far one of the best live concert albums to come out since Led Zepplin.

Everyone remembers the Sneaker Pimps. They were one of the coolest dark, rock, dance, electronic groups to come to come out in the mid 90's. Well know one of he main members, Chris Corner, has his own band now that is simply great. I thought it was going to be super cheesy, but after listening to it a couple times, I totally love it. Its got the same dark and dancey vibe that The Sneaker Pimps created. This time IAMX brings in an even more retro 80's vibe making it more hip and fighting for today's throw back era.

Baskervilles might be from NYC, but they truly belong in England. With their jangy and sweet indie pop sound they fit along perfectly with bands like The Long Blondes and Camera Obscura. "Crystal Castles"

This Toronto crew have been playing around for a couple years now. All along the way they have managed to release a bunch of great 7" singles that have gotten kids up in arms with excitement. Now they give us their debut album, which collects many of those singles together to make 16 terrific electronic, punk, and glitch pop tunes. Their music is truly unlike anything that anyone is doing now. Each song brings an old punk ethic to the mix by taking a whole new approach of making electronic music that you can dance, scream, and even chill out to. If you have been collecting any of the singles, then you already know that "Crimewave", "Alice Practice, and "Airwar" are by far the best songs that they band has released yet. "Fair Ain’t Fair"
****
Tim Fite builds upon his signature samples here, but with a more restrained, mature hand. Famous for mining record store bargain bins for long-forgotten albums, Tim takes tracks from their musical obscurity, dusts them off, and reburies them in his own tunes. But now, with "Fair Ain't Fair", come the voices, layer upon layer. Fite plays with melody in a way he never has before. Harmony rules, and the results are a collection of exquisite songs. This new album also features members of Sufjan Stevens' band and My Brightest Diamond on guest vocals. Fans of Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and Beck should check this guy out.

The Individuals
"Fields/Aquamarine"
****
The Individuals were one of the bands that pioneered the New York area music scene of the early '80s along with the dBs, Bongos, Feelies and Yo La Tengo. Their mixture of jangly guitar pop and angular nu-wave music marked a new sound for many bands around today. In 1982 their album “Fields” was named as one of the ten best albums of the year by the NY Times. The single "Dancing With My Eighty Wives" was a constant radio and club hit. This re-issue contains their first EP “Aquamarine” as well as B-sides, extended single mixes and alternate takes. The band was formed by this band's brother and sister duo Janet and Doug Wygal, while the singer, Glenn Morrow, later established the important indie label Bar/None Records.

"Take The Whole Midrange And Boost It"

Oppenheimer was born in Belfast from a common love of kraut rock, synthesizers, soundscapes, and pop music. The duo of Rocky O'Reilly and Shaun Robinson quickly congealed a unique hybrid sound that the BBC called "all poetic and bliptastic". This is their sophomore release that continues their love of pop and synth music.
It combines the admitted influences of Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, and My Bloody Valentine with the spirited harmonies and concise compositions of Brian Wilson. The band was voted #1 Most Likely To Succeed amongst Irish music professionals in Alternative Ulster magazine. Fans of Flaming Lips, The Postal Service, and Mates Of State will love listening to their catchy songs.

The Bowerbirds live in the outskirts of Raleigh, NC where it is quiet and peaceful. It is there that they find their inspiration to write and record their music by themselves.
This organic, rural, simple way of life is reflected in their music, which is pure, spiritual, and perfectly unrefined. This album, "Hymns", was originally released in 2007 on a limited edition, but is now properly getting re-released as an expanded form featuring two bonus tracks. "Only once every ten years or so does one hear a new band this good, this bursting with ideas, this audibly in love with music. It is beyond stunning. When the Arctic Monkeys came out onto the scene a ton more Northern UK bands followed their path and the labels went on a signing spree opening that their would also find another hit band. Like many bands from the same area, Harrisons were one of the many bands that sprouted from that scene. This is their debut album for those of you that like indie and lad rock. Unfortunately it isn’t amazing and the band will probably be forgotten shortly after this album, but it is cool just to hear what their scene managed to produce. The best part of the album comes with a bonus dance up remix of “Monday Arms”, which definitely deserves some indie club play. Fans of Arctic Monkeys, The Enemy, and Milburn will enjoy this band.

"Arms Way"

Islands are massive heroes in their hometown of Montreal. I first went to see them at the Pop Montreal Music Festival in early 2000. After the show 500 kids followed the band down the street, blocking all traffic in pure excitement for over an hour, just to try and get the chance to talk with them. It was truly one of they most amazing indie fan devotion events that I have seen in years. Islands originally started out as a super weird, wacky, and quirky DIY band that instantly earned them devoted followers all over the world. Now they’ve managed to take their music in a more poppy and lyrical direction that is destined to wider their fan-base even more.
